Yngwie Malmsteen: on Hell or High Water – The Most Exciting Songs Arrive as Gifts!

Yngwie Malmsteen on his new album Hell or High Water — writing ninety pieces of music, the instrumental for his late father, and why the best ideas arrive as gifts.

📀 Hell or High Water is out 13 November via Music Theories Recordings / Artone Label Group.

More than forty years in, Yngwie Malmsteen remains one of the most distinctive guitarists alive, with Yngwie handling both guitar and vocals on the new record.

In this interview with Robert Cavuoto, he explains his approach to writing — roughly eighty to ninety pieces composed for the record, each taken individually rather than built around one central idea, with the strongest arriving through improvisation or fully formed in his head. He talks about handling nearly every aspect of the recording himself, his evolution as a singer, working within the vocal keys that suit him, and the challenge of singing over his own guitar parts.

Plus the 1959 Stratocaster he broke the neck off during a guitar toss, and being told as a young musician that his style would never succeed.
