Frank Zappa: Frank's music now back in the hands of the family

Frank Zappa (1940-1993)

Guitar Player announce:

The music of Frank Zappa is now back in the hands of the Zappa Family Trust.
To celebrate this, the estate has signed a global license and distribution deal with Universal Music Enterprises to release 60 of the iconic composer’s recordings. The roll-out kicks off July 31 with 12 recordings, with another dozen recordings to be released monthly through the end of 2012.
“The ink is not yet dry on The Zappa Family Trust's worldwide deal with Universal Music Enterprises,” says Gail Zappa. “They made us the offer we couldn't refuse--for all the right reasons. It is a win-win for all of us, but mostly for Frank Zappa. Long may his baton wave. We are so ready to go.”  full post

Frank Zappa: The Play Boy interview

A candid conversation with the most original mind in rock music about world affairs, jewish princesses, fighting cancer and life beyond the fringe.

Few would doubt that Václav Havel, the Czech playwright-turned-politician, and Matt Groening, creator of "The Simpsons", make an odd pair. Yet in separate interviews, when asked which person had the greatest influence on their lives, both came up with the same name: Frank Zappa. "Who else?" wondered Groening. "I listened to the music, I dissected the lyrics and it transformed me."

Havel and Groening are not alone. In this years Playboy Music Poll, our readers chose Zappa as the 43rd inductee into the Playboy Music Hall of Fame, where he joins the likes of Frank Sinatra, John Lennon and Bruce Springsteen. But even before the votes had been counted, Playboy's editors had Zappa on their minds and had invited him to sit for the "Playboy Interview." The result is an unusual coincidence: For the first time in the magazine's history, an issue of Playboy both announces the Hall of Fame winner and features him in the interview.

Frank Zappa: Classical Selection new CD

Frank Zappa's Classical Selection: The Dissonant Classics That Informed and Inspired Zappa (2 CD Set)
A man of hugely eclectic tastes, Frank Zappa was a lover of everything from Doo-Wop to Heavy Metal and from Jazz-Funk to New Wave. Indeed a radio show he produced for the BBC in 1980 found him playing records by Edgar Varese and Igor Stravinsky, representing his love of modern classical music. Featuring nineteenth and twentieth century mavericks as diverse as Wagner, Holst, Ravel, Boulez, Stockhausen, Schoenberg, Penderecki, Harry Partch and John Cage - in addition to the aforementioned Stravinsky and Varese - this collection illustrates the impulse for many of Zappa's own compositions and as a guide to the music Frank Vincent took to his heart and cherished throughout the major part of his tragically short life. Including fully illustrated 16 page booklet with extensive notes by music historian Derek Barker, this delightful package finally reveals what it was that informed so much of Frank Zappa's extraordinary music.
