Jimmy Page: Gibson 1969 EDS-1275 Doubleneck Collector’s Edition

One of the most iconic guitars in history is Jimmy Page’s Gibson EDS-1275 doubleneck. The images of him playing it on stage with Led Zeppelin are indelible to rock ’n’ roll history. Gibson has made doubleneck electric guitars since 1958, but Jimmy defined the model from the moment his EDS-1275 was delivered to him, allowing him to play the acoustic and electric 6-string and 12-string parts of Stairway to Heaven at live performances and later using it for The Song Remains the Same, The Rain Song, Celebration Day, Tangerine, and more recently at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in November 2023.

Introducing the Jimmy Page 1969 EDS-1275 Doubleneck Collector’s Edition hand-signed by Jimmy himself. Click HERE: https://bit.ly/49RP7bk

Made in close collaboration and with significant input from Jimmy Page, this very special Collector’s Edition replication uses new 3D scanning technology and ultra-precise Murphy Lab aging techniques to aid in hand-crafting an effective clone of Jimmy Page’s original guitar. Every single detail has been thoughtfully replicated, from the exact playing wear to the sonic character.

Only 50 Collector’s Edition replications have been created by the expert luthiers of the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville, Tennessee, and artfully aged to match the original by the Murphy Lab as part of this extraordinary Collector’s Edition run honoring both the guitar and the legendary guitarist who first made it famous, Jimmy Page.

Allan Holdsworth, Jimmy Page: listed as guitarists for Donovan!

"Hurdy Gurdy Man" is a song by the Scottish musician Donovan. It was written and recorded in early 1968 and released in May as a single and gave name to the album The Hurdy Gurdy Man, which was released in October of that year. It was late speculated that the song may have also been written about one of Donovan's former colleague, a teenage girl named Dale Hynes. It reached #5 in the U.S. and #4 in the UK pop charts. The song was written for Donovan's old friend and guitar mentor Mac MacLeod. MacLeod was in a Danish band at the time called Hurdy Gurdy. The song features a harder rock sound than Donovan's usual material. It also features an Indian influence with the use of a tambura in it.

In the booklet that came with Donovan's 1992 double CD, Troubadour: The Definitive Collection 1964-1976, Allan Holdsworth and Jimmy Page are listed as the electric guitar players and John Bonham and Clem Cattini as drummers on the recording. However, according to John Paul Jones, who arranged and played bass on the track (and also booked the session musicians), Clem Cattini played the drums and Alan Parker played the electric guitar. The song was an anthem for free-spirited hippies at the time due to its psychedelic sound.

chart positions were #4 UK Singles Chart; #5 Billboard Pop Singles (US); #3 Cash Box (US)

John Paul Jones, who later became a member of Led Zeppelin, was the musical director for the session. According to drummer Clem Cattini, the musicians who played on the song were:

Donovan - acoustic guitar
John Paul Jones - arrangement, musical director and bass guitar
Alan Parker - electric guitar
Clem Cattini - drums.

The session was produced by Mickie Most and engineered by Eddie Kramer.

In interviews with Keith Altham for the NME and Hit Parader, and Tony Wilson for Melody Maker, Donovan explained he wrote "Hurdy Gurdy Man" as a gift for his friend and early guitar mentor Mac MacLeod. Donovan wanted MacLeod's band Hurdy Gurdy to record it. However, Donovan changed his mind about giving the song as gift and recorded his own version. Donovan claimed in an interview with Little Steven Van Zandt that he had originally hoped Jimi Hendrix would play on the song, but as he was unavailable, Jimmy Page played instead. Page has often been credited as playing electric guitar, which Donovan still maintains: Page, Jones and Cattini assert that it was Parker. Donovan's claim is documented in Hannes Rossacher's 2008 documentary Sunshine Superman: The Journey of Donovan, where he asserts that "Hurdy Gurdy Man" ushered in the Celtic rock sound which would lead to Page, Jones, and Bonham going on to form Led Zeppelin soon afterwards.

Fans of Steve Hillage will no doubt recall this one!

Liner Notes by: Michael Molenda,
Editor-in-Chief of Guitar Player Magazine

When many guitar fans think of “guitar masters,” the default perception is the wingo-wingo-diddley-diddley variety of shredder who has an entire library of fabulous guitar faces. Brian Tarquin has a different take on the “master” label, which is why his GUITAR MASTERS series is inspiring, thrilling, and extremely musical.

Tarquin seeks out transcendent players in all styles and levels of notoriety — known or unknown, just breaking out or near forgotten, and all points in between — to deliver a mesmerizing onslaught of tones, techniques, and melodic journeys. As a result, guitar nuts are treated to an sonic master class of stunning riffs, solos, and motifs — all fresh material for ripping off and evolving into their own guitaristic “trick bags” -- while guitar fans get an exciting and diverse listening experience unmatched by most genre-specific compilations. The 14 tracks on GUITAR MASTERS, Vol. 2 zig-zag between the intense passion and Latin-rock fusion of a young Carlos Santana, the stark yet ecstatic sting of B.B. King working his magic live, the twang-and-skank of country virtuoso Pete Anderson, and the twin-harmony fusillades of Jimmy and Johnny Ryan. You also get blues moves by Larry McCray and JW Jones, a classic 1970 Jimmy Page/Jeff Beck collaboration, a shred-tastic romp by Michael Lee Firkens and Neil Zaza, and Tarquin’s own electrifying workouts with former Jeff Beck keyboardist Max Middleton and Dixie Dregs/Deep Purple fretburner Steve Morse. And, finally, rock and hard-rock disciples can be schooled by former Dire Straits guitarist Hal Lindes, Beat the Bone, Alex De Rosso, and a ripping version of Van Halen’s “Light Up the Sky” by Yngwie Malmsteen, Billy Sheehan, and Doug Pinnick.

As with GUITAR MASTERS, Vol. 1, Tarquin’s talent for compiling brilliant and impassioned guitar moments brings out all that is glorious and holy about the act of playing guitar extremely well. While it’s a different set of moods and approaches you’ll hear on GUITAR MASTERS, Vol. 2, every note, phrase, tone color, and impact of pick and/or finger on string will send shivers down your spine. You’d have to be dead or deaf not to be moved by the beautiful noises you’ll hear on this loud and proud CD.
