Johnny Hiland: Kiesel Guitars - tries... a Multiscale SCB Guitar

Johnny Hiland visited the Kiesel Factory in San Diego earlier this year, and we had the idea to have him try some modern guitars that you wouldn't normally see a country guitarist playing. What you see in this video is the first time Johnny ever tried a multiscale guitar. There was no preparation of what he was going to play. We just handed him a guitar, pressed record, and he played the first thing that came to his mind. Enjoy!

Johnny Hiland: 20 Favourite Country Licks

20 Favourite Country Licks

JTC is incredibly pleased to bring you Nashville guitarist and Shrapnel Records artist Johnny Hiland’s first 20 Licks release!

'I will tell you this folks, these 20 licks will change your chicken picking life, that's for sure! – Johnny Hiland'

Johnny is a world renowned and prestigious country, rock, blues and bluegrass guitarist so when it comes to laying down some tasty country licks, this is the man you need to turn to!

Whether you are a seasoned country professional, or you'd like to take your first steps into the wide world of country guitar, this is THE pack that you need to download. Each lick comes complete with fast/slow videos, audio and bonus notes to help you pick apart and learn exactly how to achieve your favourite country guitar solos. Choosing DELUXE will equip you with 20 great breakdown lessons taught by Johnny himself, where he guides you through every note and technique to help you master these classic country licks.

Johnny says 'I have had an absolute blast making this package for you guys to learn. These are my favourite country licks that I use, and with this package we are going to study them one by one so that you can start using them in your own playing too! I want to say a big thanks to my studio engineer Jay Buchanan for all of his hard work, Jim Lightman for the studio access, and Steve Hardesty for the wonderful video work! I could not have done this without them, and I hope this series brings everyone a whole load of guitar picking fun!'

Inside these licks you will find plenty of country techniques such as double stops, chicken picking, multiple types of country bends and slides, hammer-ons and pull-offs, open string licks, chromatic passing tones and rich melodic country themes.

On the theory front you can expect to be working with Mixolydian scales, Pentatonic scales and the Blues scale amongst others. In the second half of the licks (over a Western Swing track) Johnny also takes a more jazz approach to his lines and hints at Super-Locrian scales, Diminished 7th arpeggios, and half/whole Diminished scales.

Don't let the theory scare you though, as these licks are just as applicable for jamming even if you don't understand the scales behind the licks. We have 2 great jamtracks included in this package - one upbeat country track in A and a western swing track in G. So for an absolute bargain price of £19.99 (DELUXE) you can put all of these fantastic country licks to great use and enrich your guitar playing forever!

As ever, we have accurately transcribed every note and included the TAB/notation in the download, full backing tracks, audio solos and track notes.

Guthrie Govan,Johnny Hiland,Dave Martone,Jon Finn:

Guitar Workshop Plus: http://guitarworkshopplus.com/?page_id=21

So you’re learning your scales, chords, and theory, and your friends say your chops are getting really good. But sometimes it still doesn’t exactly come out the way you want. Come to this seminar prepared to work hard and practice a lot, and your playing will be taken to new heights. You’ll leave with enough material to practice for several years. Students should have a reasonably solid working knowledge of scales, arpeggios and chords. Reading music is helpful but not essential. Although this course is designed primarily with rock players in mind, these concepts are built on solid theoretical principles and can apply to any style of music. Topics covered include a new look at pentatonics, rhythmic and thematic development, analysis of chord progressions, modal improvisation, creative expression and much more. One of our most popular instructors, Jon Finn, is uniquely qualified to teach this. He’s spent most of his professional life divided equally between performing and teaching. His approach is heavily influenced by his experiences working closely with masters such as Guthrie Govan, Steve Morse, John Petrucci, Dave Larue, Carl Verheyen, John Williams, Tom Morello and many others. Guitar phenom, Guthrie Govan will spend two days with students in this course.

This course will focus on the classic fingerstyle method of playing guitar made famous by the likes of Merle Travis, Chet Atkins, Scotty Anderson and Tommy Emmanuel. This seminar will cover the essential elements of this great style, including Travis-Picking, walking bass lines, harp harmonics, and cascades. In addition, through learning and playing many of the standard songs from the Travis-Picking repertoire, topics like chord-melody, solo arranging, voicings and substitutions, and improvising will be addressed. This seminar class will enjoy a visit from one of the greatest guitarists in the world, Tommy Emmanuel.

This seminar is designed to focus on rock that wears it’s blues influences on it’s sleeve. We’ll be looking at some guitar players and bands that took what they learned from the original blues artists, and forged a new style of rock. Using different tones and rhythms, but always with a nod to the past, some of the most memorable songs of the Delta were transformes into a powerful “new” sound that can still be heard influencing bands and players today. An indepth look at how to use major and minor pentatonic scales, the “blues” and “mixolydian” cales, string bending, hammer-on and pull off techniques, double stops, fresh chords, slide licks, wah-wah tricks and much more will be covered. So don’t miss out if you want to learn how to make your guitar sing like the best of ‘em! This class will enjoy a visit from the great Texas guitar slinger David Grissom.

Not just for country players, this seminar teaches improvisational concepts that apply to any style. Whether you are a jazz, rock or blues player, this class will also give you the tools to take on any country gig with confidence.Topics include hybrid pick-and-finger techniques, chick’n pickin’, pedal-steel and open string licks, building single note lines from chord forms, creating double stops, and mapping the fretboard to effectively play through chord changes.

Gain practical knowledge on how to generate a great country tone, including effects & settings, signal chain, amps, pickups, and guitars, as well as in-depth discussion of the styles of today’s masters such as Albert Lee, Johnny Hiland, Ray Flacke, Danny Gatton, Pete Anderson and more. Plenty of in-class playing is utilized to reinforce the many new ideas and techniques this style demands. Rather than ending up with just a collection of licks, several country ‘standards’ are used as templates, allowing students to implement their ideas right away into songs. Michael is an experienced player and clinician with over 25 years of experience. He has played and worked with Brent Mason, Johnny Hiland, Pat Martino, Will Ray, Toby Keith, Gary Allan, and many others. The knowledge and passion for teaching Michael brings will make this a seminar you won’t soon forget. This course will also enjoy a visit from the amazing Johnny Hiland!

This course is designed to help guitar players at a moderate to advanced level perfect their skills as a guitarist and songwriter. Covering a variety of topics including rock rhythm guitar, ear training, chord voicings, knowledge of the neck, rock improvisation and techniques, riff/hook development, song arrangement and in depth analysis of the writing techniques used in today’s hit rock and pop radio. If you’ve ever wanted to improve your abilities as a lead or rhythm guitar player, take your songs and sound to the next plateau, learn about the techniques used by your favourite rock guitarist, or learn how to perform at a professional level, then this is the course for you. Long time GWP faculty Aaron Little performs with Canadian rock band See Spot Run whose songs have seen Top 40 radio charts. Aaron has shared the stage with such acts as Our Lady Peace, Default, Bon Jovi, Stone Temple Pilots and, the special guest for this seminar, Ian Thornley.

Join one of Canada’s finest guitarists, Dave Martone on this journey into the insane! Topics covered will include insane legato, tapping and hybrid picking, sweeping, string sweeping, speed picking, bubble tapping, harp harmonics, modes/harmonic/melodic, chord inversions, and more! In-class jamming is crucial so there will be in-class performances daily as well. Dave has toured and performed with Joe Satriani, Michael Angelo Batio, Marty Friedman, Stu Hamm, Mike Portnoy, 3 Doors Down, Chad Krueger, and others.
