Robben Ford: Play Along with Pro Musicians In TrueFire’s New Multi-Track Video Jam Software
Play Along with Pro Musicians In TrueFire’s New Multi-Track Video Jam Software
SAINT PETERSBURG, FL — Keyboardists, drummers, bassists, and even guitarists can all now have a chance to jam with Robben Ford. The legendary guitarist invites musicians to join him and his band in the studio. From the comfort of their own home, players can join these “live” sessions. Musicians can mute whatever instrument track they prefer and jump on in. They can even fill in for Robben! The multi-track video jams are pre-recorded, pre-loaded, and ready to go through TrueFire’s “In The Jam” downloadable software for Windows and Mac computers.
Travel back to Oct. 27, 2013, when Robben gathers several musicians in one of Nashville’s premier recording studios to lay down the tracks for his album, “A Day in Nashville.” Robben is joined by Audley Freed on rhythm guitar, Brian Allen on bass, Wes Little on drums, Barry Green on trombone and Ricky Peterson on B3 organ. Robben leads this all-star band through nine bluesy, soulful tunes before heading to Nashville’s famous House of Blues studio. There, he and co-producer Rick Wheeler lay down vocals and guitar tracks for each of the songs. True to its name, the album is completed in a day; however, the journey doesn’t end there. Robben heads down to TrueFire’s studios to record all-new rhythm and lead parts for the songs, all with close-up views of his performance.
In total, there are more than six hours of multi-angle video tracks to choose from, along with all the separate audio tracks to mix. “What’s really cool about the In The Jam software is that you can mute or solo any instrument. So if you’re interested in my rhythm part, or even the drum part, you can solo it up, listen to it and learn it. Or you can take it out and you can play rhythm along with my lead part, or mute the drum, keyboards or bass tracks and play those parts with the band.” says Robben. “No matter what instrument you play, there’s a place for you in the band even if you’re a vocalist.”
While at TrueFire studios, Robben recorded a commentary track for each of his new performances. He takes you through everything he plays, the inspirations behind his playing, and why he chooses certain chord voicings. The commentary is accompanied by guitar tabs and notations, along with lead sheets. Robben also filmed new lead and rhythm guitar parts for each tune doubling the educational value for guitarists.
The record covers a broad spectrum in terms of styles, including jazz, rock, blues and country—or as Robben puts it, “something for everybody.” It’s a testament to how this five-time GRAMMY® nominee has built his career as a premier electric guitarist in a variety of musical contexts. Named one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of the 20th Century” by Guitar Player Magazine, Robben has played with artists as diverse as Joni Mitchell, Miles Davis, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Greg Allman, Brad Paisley and more. Today, after 40 years on the road or in the studio, Robben graciously shares what he has learned with current and future musicians.
From start to finish and fully behind the scenes, TrueFire’s In The Jam platform is the perfect opportunity for musicians of various backgrounds to witness the creative process in a comprehensive, professional format. Internationally acclaimed New York guitarist and composer Oz Noy follows his provocative two-volume exploration and reinvention of his blues roots (Twisted Blues) with Who Gives a Funk, due out April 15th – a examination of classic funk and R&B grooves, spiked with his uniquely unhinged improvisational instincts. “Simple, funky music – but soulful,” is how Noy describes it, while acknowledging that simple is not synonymous with easy: The discipline and clarity these classic structures demand put even the finest musicians to the test, and Noy and his all-star cohorts deliver a remarkable program that uncovers intriguing new pathways through timeless forms.
Inspired by the funk-blues nexus of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s music of artists like Freddie King, James Brown, Albert Collins, Who Gives a Funk mixes concise, compelling original compositions with reimaginings of vintage standards by Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Sam Cook, Charles Mingus, and even Thelonious Monk – mostly tracked live in the studio for maximum grit and spark. A core group of New York’s finest is augmented by an impressive array of guest appearances, including performances by John Medeski, Dweezil Zappa, funk pioneer Fred Wesley, Chris Potter, Robben Ford, Randy Brecker, Joe Bonamasa, members of Stevie Ray Vaughn’s Double Trouble, and Living Color vocalist Corey Glover.
Through it all, Noy’s guitar is the connecting thread. Whether steering the band with incisive, stark rhythm work or soaring over the grooves with impeccable single-note leads that recall the graceful, nuanced inflection of a fine soul vocalist, Noy brilliantly walks a musical tightrope spanning the best of the past and the future. Surprising, danceable, and accessible, Who Gives a Funk is a powerfully heartfelt new statement from one of contemporary guitar’s great improvisational stylists.

Robben Ford, Michael Thompson,Paul Jackson Jr: Jeff Lorber Fusion - Step It Up

Jeff Lorber Fusion, whose previous release Hacienda was praised for its “impeccable musicianship and deep grooves” byJazzTimes and its “funky, rollicking jams” by All About Jazz, returns with Step It Up. The fourth consecutive collaboration between GRAMMY®-nominated keyboardist/composer/producer Jeff Lorber and GRAMMY®-winning bassist/composer/ producer Jimmy Haslip since the two virtuosos reactivated Jeff Lorber Fusion five years ago, Step It Up features 11 new Lorber compositions, several co-written with Haslip. The longtime colleagues also co-produced the recording.
The title Step It Up, says Lorber, “reflects the music: optimistic, energetic and an attempt to ‘step up’ our game—our compositions, production and improvisation—to the next level. This record puts us back in a more familiar Jeff Lorber Fusion groove while we explore some new uncharted areas.”
“We were motivated to find a new direction following Hacienda,” adds Haslip. “That one was a full-on experimental recording. Step It Up is more inside the Jeff Lorber Fusion box but has some new and interesting twists.”
Assisting the pair in creating those twists is a team of world-class musicians, including two former bandmates of Haslip’s in the award-winning fusion band Yellowjackets: saxophonist Bob Mintzer and guitarist Robben Ford. Also lending a hand are drummers Ash Soan, Gary Novak and Vinnie Colaiuta; saxophonist Gary Meek and guitarists Michael Thompson and Paul Jackson Jr. David Mann provides horn arrangements and Lenny Castro percussion.
As on all past Jeff Lorber Fusion releases, dating back to its 1977 self-titled debut, Step It Up effortlessly mines and merges elements from multiple genres, including jazz, funk, rock and R&B. The original Jeff Lorber Fusion took an extended hiatus in the early ’80s, reemerging and recharging in 2010 with an updated approach that incorporates contemporary rhythms, technology and instrumentation.
“I’m always writing new stuff and I got together with Jimmy to play him some of the music I was working on,” says Lorber. “My compositions were a bit diverse and Jim suggested focusing more. We came up with the idea of ’70s modal jazz.” Inspired by the classic recordings of such greats as Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock, Lee Morgan, Joe Henderson and Weather Report, Lorber and Haslip followed their collective muse, drawing conceptually from the influential output of those legends but filtering it all through their own sensibilities—several of the co-written tunes developed directly out of bass parts Haslip had created.
“We eventually put a list of original tunes together that we thought made a statement and had this modal thread running through it,” says Haslip. “We also have a modern approach to this and we wanted to make sure that there would be strong elements of excitement and uplifting melodic motifs.”
Among the 11 tracks featured on Step It Up, Lorber cites “Fire Spirit,” “Starfish,” “Tenth Victim” and the title track as “having that modal center/freedom, along with some powerful grooves like some of those tracks from the ’70s. Then along with those we have some cool blues tunes like ‘Arecibo’ and ‘Deep Green,’” the latter among three tracks featuring Robben Ford. Another highlight is “Get Up,” about which Lorber says, “Jimmy discovered this one while listening to some older demos on his computer. We had written the sketch a number of years ago and forgotten about it. We both thought it was great when we heard it and wanted to put it on the album, however we didn’t have a melody. I wrote a number of melodies for it but ended up trying to simplify and minimize it as much as possible to not take away from the funkiness of the basic track, which we liked so much. Ash played some really cool drums and David Mann came up with an outstanding horn arrangement.”
Lorber’s composition “Up on This” has its roots in what Jeff calls “a mean modern groove kind of reminiscent of Chaka Khan’s ‘Ain’t Nobody,’” while “Mustang” sports a syncopated melody and superb playing from Mintzer. “Right on Time” is a hard-hitting, fast but highly melodic swing tune with some Hammond B3 organ accents, topped off by a fiery Gary Meek sax solo at the end and sweet horn arrangements by Mann. The album is rounded out by the self-explanatory “Soul Party,” featuringGary Novak’s solid drum groove and Michael Thompson’s greasy and inventive guitar accompaniment.
Both Lorber and Haslip are quick to heap praise upon the other for his vital contributions to the final product. With decades of expertise between them in every area of composing, playing and recording, they know each other’s strengths inside out. “I’m more of a detail guy and Jimmy is more of a big picture guy,” says Lorber, who plays Fender Rhodes, Moog, mini-Moog and piano on the album. “He helps a lot with figuring out which musicians we might call to complement and develop the songs (in this case Bob Mintzer and Robben Ford).”
Adds Haslip, “Jeff and I have really good chemistry and we have a lot in common with a love of many different styles of music. So together, we form a strong, positive union of ideas and creative energy.”
Never has that chemistry been more evident than on Step It Up. Where they will head next from here is anybody’s guess, but both Jeff and Jimmy are excited about the possibilities. Says Lorber, “I think the direction we’ve charted out from the last few records and this one is a creative, positive one. These records have been about combining the old and new, taking the originalJeff Lorber Fusion sound of funky fusion with bebop and R&B elements and reaching both forward and backward to explore new territory. There’s a renewed sense of exploration, harmonic and melodic adventure and jazziness. The idea of fusion seems fresh again.”

Robben Ford: super smooth guitar work MEZZ Breda 2015

Another super smooth guitar work from Robben Ford, when he and his band played the MEZZ venue in Breda, The Netherlands on Friday, May 1st, 2015.
Extract from Robben's website: Guitar virtuoso Robben Ford’s new album ‘Into The Sun’ shines a bright light on his artful, contemporary songwriting and the stunning playing that’s made him a favorite foil of Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, George Harrison and other legends….his extensive discography, which embraces more than 35 albums under his own name and with his various bands. There’s also Ford’s session and sideman work, which includes hundreds of concert appearances and albums by Bonnie Raitt, Barbara Streisand, Charlie Musselwhite, KISS, Ruthie Foster, Jimmy Witherspoon and Rickie Lee Jones. ‘Into the Sun’, which follows last year’s critically acclaimed A Day In Nashville and 2013’s Bringing It Back Home, explores the breadth of Ford’s sophisticated, visionary writing and playing, creating a new chapter in his brilliant musical history. The album features a coterie of guests: gritty Southern rock newcomer Tyler Bryant on “Stone Cold Heaven,” Allman Brothers guitarist and Gov’t Mule frontman Warren Haynes on “High Heels And Throwing Things,” slide guitar guru Sonny Landreth on “So Long 4 U,” Americana and blues icon Keb’ Mo’ and pedal steel wizard Robert Randolph on “Justified,” and vocal sensation ZZ Ward on “Breath Of Me.” Niko Bolas, whose credits include Neil Young, John Mayer and Keith Richards, engineered.
...supporting harmonica virtuoso Charlie Musselwhite. Later, Robben played with blues giant Jimmy Witherspoon on festival stages. In 1974, Robben joined the historic fusion group Tom Scott & The L.A. Express and began touring with Joni Mitchell. Later that year ex-Beatle George Harrison enlisted Ford and Scott to join him on his Dark Horse tour, which was followed by more touring with Joni Mitchell. Ford went on to record and tour with the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan, Phil Lesh and a host of others. By the time he joined Miles Davis’ group in the ’80s, he’d developed a signature approach based on an axis of blues, jazz, pop and rock. Since leaving Davis’ band, Ford has primarily forged his own path — touring and cutting a series of varied sounding albums with the Ford Brothers, Blue Line and Renegade featuring fellow guitar master Michael Landau.

Robben Ford: Into the Sun - new album

Robben Ford (vocals, guitar); Jim Cox (piano, organ); Brian Allen (upright bass, electric bass); Wes Little (drums, percussion)
Continuing his latter-day renaissance, Robben Ford widens his palette on Into the Sun. The very title suggests this 2015 album is bright and open, and it is. There's a nice, relaxed groove to this record as Ford plays as much Southern-fried soul and funky jazz as he does blues. All of these sounds intersect at Ford's sweet spot. He's a sly, versatile guitarist who can dip into a variety of styles without seeming like a dilettante, and on Into the Sun, that includes the lazy acoustic opener "Rose of Sharon," which finds its counterpart on "Justified," a backporch blues duet with Keb' Mo'. Other guests are here -- ZZ Ward shines on "Breath of Me," Warren Haynes spars on "High Heels and Throwing Things," Sonny Landreth shows up for "So Long 4 U" -- a sign of Ford's generosity. Then again, this wide array of players fit neatly into Ford's soulful style, which is unified by its love of rhythm & blues -- meaning both the groove and the long, yet unflashy, solos -- and open-hearted vibe. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
