Shredguy Records and Sumthinfierce Records have joined forces to bring fans of heavy metal guitar, Toby Knapp - Archives Of Magick.

This special two hour double disc compilation reaches far back into Knapp's history from 1988 to the present. Unreleased neo-classical instrumentals, never before heard ONWARD tracks and serious explorations into extreme musical genres. you seem like your heavy metal mate , your tracks are real hard , tell us about your influences and about shredguy records your label.

I love metal, all forms- speed, thrash, death, Black, traditional, neoclassical! My influences started with Jimmy Page and eventually Yngwie and tons of the great speed/thrash of the 80's, specifically Slayer, Kreator, Destruction, Celtic Frost, Venom, Mercyful Fate and Bathory. All I can say about Shredguy Records is it's a damn good label and I'm proud of my affiliation with them, they really are getting the music out there.
2 what albums are out with shredguy or comming up in the near future for you mate?

I have one physical cd "THE CAMPAIGN" and a compilation available through download only (for now) called "Archives of Magick". I am starting the demo process for the follow up to my first album for them, due out in late 2011 or early 2012. more

As previously reported, Knapp has issued a brief rundown of some of the songs on The Campaign:

"The title track opens the album and is an instrumental bringing Black Metal, Holdsworth and Ritchie Blackmore together with ill intent. Next we have 'Conspire' with Dean Sternberg on vocals, this is one of the best collaborations I have done and a few 'in the know' know it. Evil and melodic without trying. Up next is 'Towards Power Unimagined', an instrumental inspired by the book Seth: Blood Magick. This is a pretty vicious hybrid of true Metal genres and came at no small cost.

Next we have 'We Are Legions' with original Vital Remains vocalist Jeff Gruslin absolutely taking the track to new dimensions, guitars much like Presence / Deathwish era Page while Gruslin sings his song of War. After that it is a track I wrote in 1991, and re-recorded (with technical improvements) 'Telekinesis', thrash meets Steeler-era Yngwie and more hellish holocaust riffs when least expected. The album is so abrasive up to this point it is time for some rock like you haven't heard in years.

'Wicked' sounds like something that may have appeared on Zep's Physical Grafitti featuring vocalist Tom Cline, who mixes ALICE IN CHAINS and Zep resulting in the catchiest chorus I've heard in my music! After this Attila Csihar delivers the nightmare called 'Reanimation', and to hear Black Metal's greatest vocalist scream about rituals of The Golden Dawn over my music really makes the locals seem so............local. After that we have 'Plutonium Race', which is an instrumental that for me, sums up what neo-classical shred is all about, with a track like this, why fill an album with carbon copies?

Move to new musical terrain. Dean Sternberg gets the final track 'Lack of Inspiration' full of riffing that is a fuck you to the modern sound of metal, beating it at it's own game. Dean catches the vibe with angry vocals about; basically every other band is so pissed and dark and heavy and badass. Dean seems to complain that he's not going to fake the 'acid words of the messenger' because as the chorus says 'I have nothing to say that you don't already know.' I won't name the nice little bands putting on the pissed act, but we are actually quite pissed, but by the end of the record, what do you say? Album after album after album about hell on the earth and man's downfall and morals shot to shit, I think The Campaign says something fresh musically and lyrically in an overcrowded scene.

Then again, what do I know? ENJOY!

Toby Knapp: shred academy interview

Tell us how you got onto the Shrapnel label.

When I was 17-20, I recorded music constantly and I figured it wouldn't hurt to send the demos to Mike Varney. I never received a response from him, but I sent demos anyway. After three years of doing this, the phone rang and it was Varney saying "keep working on the music, I think you are about ready to do an album". Within a few months I signed the contract and flew to Las Vegas to have my album produced by one of my favorite guitarists, Tony Fredianelli and of course Ray Luzier, who is now with Korn, played drums. It was surreal.

During your formative years, what sort of practice regime did you have?

I picked up the guitar after watching the Led Zeppelin concert film "The Song Remains the Same". I spent alot of time learning Jimmy Page solos, he was and still is my biggest influence and inspiration. When Yngwie and the whole Shrapnel era was new, I began practicing around eight hours a day. Warm up with chromatics, spend an hour on blues, an hour on legato, an hour on sweep picking, etc. every day.

What advice do you have for beginner and intermediate players who are trying to achieve a highly advanced level of playing?

Do not underestimate the importance of being a well versed blues player whether you like it or not. Look to Clapton, Beck and Page before you try to become Paul Gilbert or Jason Becker. Get a teacher who will actually respect the direction you wish to go and they will help you get there, anybody can call themselves a guitar teacher so make sure you are not wasting money on a punk with a guitar. Instructional videos are fantastic, I learned so much from videos by guitarists like Paul Gilbert, Vinnie Moore, Greg Howe and Marty Friedman. Most importantly, love the process and have some self discipline.

Toby Knapp: godless rising CD date

The Godless Rising album "Trumpet of Triumph" has a new release date of Feb 9th however the January/Feb tour is already booked so that is still a go. We plan to do a tour in July as well and any other special events/fests that might come up. My solo album "The Campaign" is now going to be released in January. I have temporarily removed the tracks from that album from the player but you can still hear a track streaming at http://www.bravewords.com/knuckletracks/?tid=0 in the meantime. I'll be doing some interviews soon and will post them here for those interested. One seems to be a 'cult' favorite, but has never been issued on CD, 'Eternal Winters' from a 1996 Darken demo. The other track I am asked often about, 'Infinite Opposition' from a solo EP that Wild Rags Records released also in 1996. This will bring the album's total to ten songs.
