about 3Below features three extended range instruments played by Michael Manring (Jaco Pastorius alumni, creator of the Hyperbass), Trey Gunn (Warr Guitarist with King Crimson), Alonso Arreola (Mexican bassist, writer and poet).
Their latest release, "Live in Mérida”, was recorded on November 5, 2023 at the Palacio del La Música de Mérida in the Yucatan in Mexico. During this performance, they were joined by special guest Emmanuel Pina on the oud.
3Below began in a small but significant way when Arreola and Gunn, along with Gunn’s daughter Harper, traveled across Mali and The Dogon in West Africa in 2012. They took their baritone ukuleles with them hoping to touch base with local musicians. Mali is known for its deep musical traditions and by the third day they had found their way in: go into each small village and ask for lessons from the local master drummer or ngoni player (African string instrument). This led to a string of lessons and playing sessions with a variety of musicians from Bamako, Séguo, Mopti, Djenne and throughout the Dogon where they ended up participating in a late night festival and jam session with the king and queen of Begnemato.
These experiences and the musical languages they learned...

trey:GUNN – Trey Gunn, the extraordinary Warr guitarist and musician, has left an indelible mark on the world of progressive music. Renowned for his virtuosic talent, he has graced the stages alongside legendary acts such as King Crimson, Brian Eno, David Sylvan, Happy Rhodes, Puscifer, and Tool, contributing his unique blend of mesmerizing melodies and innovative playing. As the founder of the esteemed 7D Media record label, Gunn continues to be a guiding force in curating exceptional musical experiences. Trey Gunn’s visionary artistry and unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of sound make him a true luminary in the realm of progressive music.

pat:MASTELOTTO – Very rarely does a drummer go on to forge the most successful career on the demise of their former hit band. Phil Collins and Dave Grohl have managed it, and so too has Pat Mastelotto, a self taught drummer from Northern California, who has also been involved with pushing the envelope of electronic drumming. Pat has spent a lifetime jumping genres from pop, to prog, to electronica to world music with – among others – Mr. Mister, XTC, David Sylvian, The Rembrandts, Kimmo Pohjonen, and for the last 25 years with King Crimson and Stick Men.

markus:REUTER – Markus Reuter is a composer, guitarist, and producer. He began his musical journey as a composer before delving into Robert. Fripp’s Guitar Craft, mastering the Chapman Stick, and eventually transitioning to the U8 Touch Guitar. Reuter has released numerous solo albums and has collaborated extensively with various musicians. He holds a prominent position in the experimental band Anchor and Burden and forms the duo Tuner with Pat. Additionally, he was a member of Europa String Choir and has worked alongside notable artists such as Gary Husband, Robert Rich, J. Peter Schwalm, Mark Wingfield, and many others. Reuter’s versatility is evident through his involvement in Devin Townsend’s touring band. Notably, he also performs in power trios including Stick Men with Pat and Tony Levin, TRUCE with Asaf Sirkis and Fabio Trentini, and Markus Reuter/Tim Motzer/Kenny Grohowski.

Trey Gunn, Michael Cozzi: The Security Project Feat. King Crimson, Shriekback and Peter Gabriel Members To Tour In Support of New Live Album

The Security Project Feat. King Crimson, Shriekback and Peter Gabriel Members To Tour In Support of New Live Album

"Seattle, WA - The Security Project, featuring members of King Crimson, Shriekback and Peter Gabriel's original band bring the genre-less masterpieces of Peter Gabriel into the 21st Century on their new live album “Live 1”. Seattle-based Trey Gunn and Michael Cozzi join esteemed drummer Jerry Marotta and NY keyboardist David Jameson to harness the core of these songs. Added to the pedigree of these players is the voice of Brian Cummins, whose interpretations add haunting authenticity to the immaculate arrangements.

These live recordings are a first – no one has dared take on Peter Gabriel's material at this level before!

Jerry Marotta says: “Peter was always great at setting the table for us as musicians; he always got us started with great ideas… As we were creating SECURITY we had no idea we were making something so unique… I’m proud that with Security Project we’re able to deliver the deepest of those songs, and do it with real conviction — playing them live.”

Marotta and Gunn first met when recording “The First Day” with David Sylvian and Robert Fripp in Woodstock, NY. Their friendship and musical partnership eventually led to The Security Project.

Says Trey, “This material is ridiculously special. Of course, Peter is a special artist. But the material on his first few records, especially the 3rd and 4th ones, are productions with no peer. The Security Project can really play these epic pieces. We bring the same level of detailed precision to arrangements that are present in the originals. And then some. We not only play some of the pieces authentically we also take many pieces and put our own twist on them. 'Here Comes The Flood' and our melding of 'Games Without Frontiers' with 'Of These, Hope' from 'The Last Temptation of Christ' soundtrack are just two examples.”

Jerry Marotta
Drummer, Multi-Instrumentalist, and Producer Jerry Marotta has recorded and toured with Peter Gabriel, The Indigo Girls, Hall and Oates, Tears For Fears, Elvis Costello, Paul McCartney, Trey Gunn, Cher, 10,000 Maniacs, David Sylvian, Robert Fripp, Robbie Robertson, Ani DiFranco, Suzanne Vega, Sarah McLachlan, Tony Levin, Todd Rundgren, Los Lobos, and Stevie Nicks, to name only a few. Through his extensive touring experience and performances on hundreds of albums Jerry has worked with many of the greatest artists in the world. His unique musical skills have graced myriad movie soundtracks, video games, TV shows, and percussion software over the past 4 decades.

Trey Gunn
A native Texan who resides in Seattle, Gunn is known for the unusual 10-string touch guitar that he plays. From the blistering live recordings at the Royal Albert Hall in London with David Sylvian and Robert Fripp (“Damage”, Virgin Records) to ten years recording and touring with King Crimson – a group many contend as the most aggressively, adventurous rock band of all time – Gunn is associated with a constant stream of cutting edges projects. Gunn has toured and/or recorded with TOOL, John Paul Jones, Maynard J. Keenan's “Puscifer”, Vernon Reid, Azam Ali, David Hykes of the Harmonic Choir and Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree. He currently runs his own media label (7d Media) while dividing his time between solo work; his projects TU, KTU, The Security Project, 3Below and Quodia; film/TV scoring and coaching musicians in the creative process.

Michael Cozzi
Originally from Wales & London, Cozzi got his start in the mid 80's as the guitarist for the group Shriekback which had the pleasure of touring with “Simple Minds” “INXS” and “Peter Gabriel”. In the early 90's, Cozzi joined “Sky Cries Mary” with whom he co wrote 5 albums and toured extensively. During this time Cozzi opened up his recording studio “Moscozzi Studio” where he co-wrote and produced the last two SCM albums “Here and Now” and “Small Town”. He has written and produced music for bands, films, commercials, and video games, which led to him meeting and working with Trey Gunn. Two years ago Trey asked Cozzi if he knew of a guitarist for The Security Project, Cozzi put his hand up like a kid in the classroom and said “me me me”.

Brian Cummins
Brian has toured all over Europe with The Carpet Crawlers and with Mick Pointer's Marillion. When originally approached about The Security Project he thought it was a joke. “Play with Jerry Marotta and Trey Gunn? And performing some of my favorite music in the world? Come on!” Once it became clear to Brian this was no joke, he was on the first plane to Woodstock.”

David Jameson
Keyboardist/Eigenharpist David Jameson began his music career in the late 1970's – the heyday of powerful keyboard players. He spent several years touring with Time Machine and then left the music scene for a career at IBM after completing a PHD in Computer Science at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. At IBM, Jameson created and managed the Computer Music Research group and was elected to the prestigious IBM Academy of Technology. David left IBM to found Digiportal Software and Deskew Technologies that develops the acclaimed Scorecerer sheet music manager application for the iPad. He also designs MaxMSP applications and libraries for live performance and for the Eigenharp – an electronic hybrid instrument akin to a computerized bassoon that features heavily in The Security Project shows. In addition to working with The Security Project, David also performs with Beyond The Wall.

The Security Project tour dates:

Here's what's being said about The Security Project:

“A Scary Good Show!” – Progression Magazine

“Sound as good — at times maybe better — than even Gabriel nowadays.”– Time Out, NYC

“King Crimson’s Trey Gunn brilliantly injects a wicked warp to Gabriel’s melodic weave.”– G.A.S. Online

“TSP are a mind-blowing amalgam of disparate musical brilliance!” – Gabriel Researcher/Lilywhite Leigh

“Peter Gabriel wrote some of the finest most profound songs of his generation. The Security Project brings them to life with an authenticity that goes beyond mimicking the original recordings. They find the emotional core.” – Glenn Hughes

After the release of The Security Projects new live album and forthcoming West Coast tour, in the fall (October/November) the band will release a second CD of recordings (Live 2+, which is more live tracks combined with some studio tracks). They will then embark on a tour of the Mid-West and East Coast of the USA.

Trey Gunn,Henry Kaiser: Invisible Rays new CD

Henry Kaiser (guitar); Trey Gunn (guitar); Morgan Ågren (zither, drums)
A fortuitous meeting off the beaten track in Scandinavia has given rise to Invisible Rays, a spontaneous collaboration between two of the most innovative guitarists and one of the most explosive drummers on the planet. Trey Gunn (King Crimson), guitarist/improviser Henry Kaiser (too many famous collaborators to list) and drummer Morgan Agren (Zappa, Bill Laswell) first met at a music education conference in March, 2011 and within days were in the studio together. At once anchored and propelled by Agren's ferociously complex drumming, Invisible Rays soars through phantasmagoric soundscapes shaped and painted by searing electric guitars and raging bass lines. The impact is monumental.

Trey Gunn: The Third Star new CD

Trey Gunn (8 and 12 string Warr Guitars, Chapman Stick); Toyah (Vocal); Alice (Vocal); Serpentine ( Vocal); Bob Muller (Drums, Tabla, Bandir, Percussion, Cluster Flutes); Pat Mastellotto (Drums);

Trey Gunn not only graduated from Chapman stick player to Warr Guitarist on his 1996 CD The Third Star, but being a member of King Crimson for two years also prepared him to drastically improve over his preceding CD, 1993's One Thousand Years. Having mastered the guitar-bass-stick hybrid instrument in the context of the veteran British band, Gunn plays every melody and bassline on The Third Star.

King Crimson leader Robert Fripp's wife, Toyah, leads a cast of three guest vocalists, but the mostly-instrumental disc primarily involves Gunn and drummer/percussionists Bob Muller and Pat Mastelotto (also a 1994 King Crimson addition). Gunn's deep, growling bassline and Far Eastern melodies set the tone on the opening "Dziban," leading into the 7/4-timed "Symbiotic." Gunn performed with the Fripps in the early 1990s with the group Sunday All Over the World, and this track recalls some of that band's post-New Wave angst through Toyah's impassioned, high-pitched vocals. Muller's versatility between a standard drum kit and Indian tablas and bandirs ("Arrakis," "Sirrah") makes The Third Star even harder to categorize.

Vocalist Alice provides the title track with a backward-sounding chant, as Gunn shows the influence of Robert Fripp through soundscape washes and dreamy chords. Mastelotto's two tracks are the most Crimson-esque - especially the looping "Acquiring Canopus" - but Muller proves to be to Gunn's band what the now-electronic drummer is to King Crimson. "Kuma" and "Indiera" are largely acidic duets between Gunn's melodies and bottom and Muller's drum kit and hand drums. The latter also features Serpentine's guttoral screams, ending The Third Star on a deliciously nightmarish note. For his next CD, 2000's The Joy of Molybdenum, Gunn added guitarist Tony Geballe; by 2001 he'd added another Warr Guitarist in Joe Mendelson.

Between the three futuristic string players and Muller's cross-reference of Eastern and Western drumming, the Trey Gunn Band is poised to erase any of the lines still separating musical genres - and The Third Star foretold it all to anyone who would listen. ~ Bill Meredith

Trey Gunn: modulator CD feature Marco Minneman

Trey Gunn/Marco Minnemann: Modulator **Shipping May 18

Releasing May 18

Trey Gunn teams up with extreme drummer, Marco Minnemann, for this tour de force of compositions. Modulator is the culmination of working with a live 50 minute drum solo of Minnemann's. Gunn calls this ''the most challenging recording I have ever taken on.'' All the music was composed and produced on the top of this one contiguous drum solo. ''Considering I don't even care for drum soloing, that these pieces have turned out so amazing, is utterly astounding to me,'' Gunn recounts. Touch guitars, basses, ouds, fiddle, wurlitzers, strings and uillean pipes all make an appearance here. These recording prove, without a doubt, the old saying - ''with great restrictions come great creative leaps.'' Buy

Fricke writes, "When I saw KTU in Europe, they were as powerful and transgressive as the killer King Crimson. Pohjonen is a wonder unto himself: animating his wind song with pedals and processing; attacking the bellow with the ecstatic fury of Jimi Hendrix."

Jack Hammer - Brian Tarquin

BRIAN TARQUIN
Ghost Dance
Digital Release available on iTunes
Release date: August 21, 2007

“Cosmopolitan flair is reminiscent of guitarists Lee Ritenour and Brian Hughes, with a tincture of Steely Dan.” -JAZZIZ Magazine

“Tarquin's delivery, though detailed, remains melodic and never ventures into the abstract. Although his acid jazz is a gentler breed of fusion. Tarquin plays with a fleet-fingered, smooth style which floats across freewheeling pieces…” - JazzTimes

“Tarquin redefines cosmopolitan jazz with an up-to-date sound that continues to expand the smooth jazz genre.” -R&R Magazine

“His debut album, Ghost Dance, introduced audiences to a seamless, guitar-driven blend of jazz, pop and world music.” -SESAC Focus Magazine
