Will Schut: unconventional shred guitar

Will Schut (arriving on this planet July 9th 1969, thus beating Neil Armstrong arriving on the moon by eleven days) started playing guitar at the tender age of nine (right after hearing Van Halen’s 1978 debut album).

When the eighties hit Will started to play in bands, the most successful of which was LAFORDOVA. That band saw a worldwide album release with 1999’s “Circus of the Damned”, opened shows for Vanden Plas, Hammerfall and Paul di’Anno’s Battlezone and even went on tour with King’s X.

When Lafordova’s record company went belly-up, Will decided it was time to do what he always wanted, to start a solo career concentrating on instrumental guitar music..

In 2006 Will launched his website that included three songs that were free to download, “Hypervertion”, “Everything is 1.618!!” and “I Saw Pygmalion the Other Day”. The response was overwhelming.

Just one year later Will became the first Dutch guitar player to become a teacher for the international Shred Academy.

In 2008, right after becoming a member of the Shred For Charity Foundation, Will released his first solo album “Weapons of Mass Seduction” and again downloads ran in the thousands. He also put out his first instruction videos and again the views ran in the five digit numbers almost overnight. At the end of that same year Will even got his own signature guitar, a precision high-powered axe built by master builder Patrick Koopman.

In 2009 things even picked up a pace or two, Will appeared in a PK promo video and his studio was featured in Interface Magazine. At the end of 2009 Will’s version of the Charlie Daniels song “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” was placed on the website of Dutch national Radio and just around Christmas Will’s second solo album “Hidden in Reality” was released, again it was free to download and again thousands of people did.

When Will became a father on January 3rd of 2010 he tried to slow things down but didn’t quite succeed. He appeared on the “Let There Be Rock” radioshow and became the subject of a competition in the Dutch rockmagazine Aardschok where you could actually win a free guitarlesson by Will as well as a trip to the shop where Will’s signature guitar is built.

Putting even more on his plate, he became a columnist for the international guitarmagazine GitaarPlus, talking about a different exotic scale every month. Also he became an official Axe-FX (by Fractal Audio) user, probably the most impressive guitar related product to hit the market since the instrument went electric ages ago.

In September of that same year the number of visitors to Will’s site crosses the mythically number of 100,000. Dutch national radio puts yet another cover of Will on their website, this time a song originally by George Baker called “Little Green Bag” and Will releases his third solo album, “Blueprints For a Timetravel Paradox”. However, the songs on this album aren’t new recordings but rather remasters of earlier recordings dating back to 2005, 2000 and even as far as 1993. This didn’t scare the public; again download figures are extremely impressing.

Now in 2011 Will is working on a new album with all new compositions and recordings. The album is due to be released before January 1st 2012 and is titled “Chupacabra Farm”. Future plans include the release of (partly vintage) videos, more free to download music and collaborations with some rather famous musicians from all over the world.

Tom Quayle: Monster Pedal Board Finally Finished! Well Nearly...

Welcome back one and all and thanks for checking out this weeks blog update! This one is a gear fest for all you pedal fanatics out there- if you suffer from GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) run away now!! I just got a Pedaltrain Pro board from a really cool guy on Ebay. I've been looking for one for ages and found an amazing deal last week. As you can see in the pic below I needed the Pro version as I've crammed TONS of pedals onto this thing. It may seem like complete overkill but all of these pedals sound so good through the Port City Pearl (www.portcityamps.com) that I can't leave any of them off. At the moment the Suhr pedals and the BB preamp aren't wired up but I've ordered some custom patch cables to get those in the remaining free loops of the Octa-Switch. The De-Delay will eventually be placed in the last loop with the Toadworks Redux and Strymon Blue Sky Reverb. full post

Brian May: Lady Gaga collaborates with Queen guitarist

Lady Gaga has teamed up with Queen guitarist Brian May for her new album.

Lady Gaga
The outrageous pop star is a huge fan of British rock group Queen, and they even inspired her stage name. Gaga has previously spoken about her admiration for the band’s late frontman Freddie Mercury and Brian’s strumming skills appear on the track You & I, which features on her eagerly-anticipated second album Born This Way – due out next month.

“It’s always been Gaga’s dream to perform with Queen,” a source said. “If it wasn’t for Queen, there would be no Gaga.

“This collaboration with Brian May means the world to her.” more

News: Blogger Buzz explains outage... glad it wasn't me who rolled out the change

Blogger is back

What a frustrating day. We’re very sorry that you’ve been unable to publish to Blogger for the past 20.5 hours. We’re nearly back to normal — you can publish again, and in the coming hours posts and comments that were temporarily removed should be restored. Thank you for your patience while we fix this situation. We use Blogger for our own blogs, so we’ve also felt your pain.

Here’s what happened: during scheduled maintenance work Wednesday night, we experienced some data corruption that impacted Blogger’s behavior. Since then, bloggers and readers may have experienced a variety of anomalies including intermittent outages, disappearing posts, and arriving at unintended blogs or error pages. A small subset of Blogger users (we estimate 0.16%) may have encountered additional problems specific to their accounts. Yesterday we returned Blogger to a pre-maintenance state and placed the service in read-only mode while we worked on restoring all content: that’s why you haven’t been able to publish. We rolled back to a version of Blogger as of Wednesday May 11th, so your posts since then were temporarily removed. Those are the posts that we’re in the progress of restoring.

Again, we are very sorry for the impact to our authors and readers. We try hard to ensure Blogger is always available for you to share your thoughts and opinions with the world, and we’ll do our best to prevent this from happening again.

Scotty Anderson: time to burn your guitar!

Jason Becker: The Bad Ass interview!

Jason survived beyond the doctors’ expectations, but not without losing the ability to play guitar, walk, or even talk. In 1996, Jason’s father, Gary Becker, developed a simple, yet ingenious, method of communication using his eyes after Jason was no longer able to speak. With the letters of the alphabet laid out in a grid, Jason is able to spell out words by moving his eyes to the position of each letter. A translator who knows the chart is then able to vocalize the letters for him and help form the sentences. It was a breakthrough.
“It is faster than any computer I have tried,” says Jason with help from his father. “It is a life-saving thing. Without communication I would probably be gone.”
Today, Jason has lived with ALS for over 20 years and continues to write, compose music, and inspire.
“He’s a very busy man,” says Gary. “I think that’s one of the reasons why he’s still here – he has work to do and he still loves doing it. He became a spiritual inspiration to people. First he got letters every day from people saying what an inspiration he was musically and spiritually, and now he gets emails every day from all over the world, including people that are depressed [and] young people that want to commit suicide, and when they heard his story they said, ‘Man, if you can kick that I’m going to live my life in a more positive way.’”
Despite living with what most would categorize as a debilitating and devastating illness, Jason faces each day with purpose and a positive spirit. Although he has a very different life today than he had 20 years ago, he’s able to acknowledge where his creativity and inspiration come from – something ALS can never take away.
“I have adapted,” Jason says. “I guess I have accepted that my life is different than I had planned. And it is okay. . . . I guess [ALS] does rule my physical life for sure, but. . . it doesn’t rule my mind.” watch the incredible interview

Rory Gallagher: Notes From San Francisco 2CD!

Rory Gallagher - Notes From San Francisco 2CD

LOST RORY GALLAGHER STUDIO ALBUM FROM 1978 TO FINALLY BE RELEASED!

~Two-Disc Set, Notes From San Francisco, To Land May 17 Via Eagle Rock Entertainment ~

~Lavish Package Includes Never-Before-Released 1979 Concert!~

The story goes that Jimi Hendrix was once asked what it was like to be the greatest guitarist in the world, to which he replied, “I don’t know, go ask Rory Gallagher!”

Rory Gallagher (1948-1995) is simply one of the all-time guitar greats. Slash, The Edge, Brian May, Johnny Marr, Janick Gers, Ritchie Blackmore, Glenn Tipton and Vivian Campbell have all said it. Since practically inventing the Power Trio format in Taste (both Cream and Taste debuted in 1966), Gallagher’s music has stood the test of time and he’s as popular now as he ever was, his influence gargantuan.

The story of Rory’s lost San Francisco album actually starts in Japan. In November 1977, after a grueling six-month world tour, the band flew straight from their last show in Japan to San Francisco to begin working on a new album with famed American producer Elliot Mazer (who worked on Neil Young’s Harvest, Big Brother & The Holding Company’s Cheap Thrills and The Band’s The Last Waltz). Mazer recalls the sessions grew “tense,” as Gallagher thought the mixing process “too complicated.” By the end of January 1978, he had shelved the whole record and broke up his band of the past five years.

Fast forward to 2011 when Rory’s brother/manager Donal allowed his son Daniel to recover the album from the Gallagher archive and begin the process of mixing it with his engineer. Rory said in 1992 he hoped the album would surface one day but only if it were remixed. Bingo. Hearing this historic never-before-issued studio album from a key period of Gallagher’s career (the album that would have been released between Calling Card and Photo Finish) is the Holy Grail for Rory’s fans.

Rory Gallagher - Rue The Day (Studio) by UDIGIMKTG

CD #2 is another fabulous discovery: a blistering live album taken from four December nights in 1979 at San Francisco’s The Old Waldorf. In the audience Van Morrison, on stage Rory Gallagher (guitar/vocals), Gerry McAvoy (bass) and Ted McKenna (drums). Daniel Gallagher chose to add the live side to highlight why Rory chose to shelve the studio album and reduce his band back down to a three-piece. Rory, after seeing The Sex Pistols at Winterland during final mixes for his own album, was struck by the stark drama and blunt primitivism of pure punk. “It was as close to Eddie Cochran as you’re going to get,'' he enthused. He had been saying that he wanted to get back to what he called “meat’n’potato rock’n’roll,” a stripped-back primal raw immediacy hearkening back to his Taste days.

A street has been named after him in Paris; a corner in Dublin; a statue in his Ballyshannon birthplace, where The International Rory Gallagher Tribute Festival is held. There’s a Rory Gallagher Place and Rory Gallagher Music Library in Cork. Annual tributes are held in Germany and Japan. The man has sold in excess of 20 million albums. Notes From San Francisco [MSRP $17.98] will be a worthy addition to his canon.

News: Blogger back!

Wow that was a tough one... no doubt someone is going to cop it when this is all over and done... as simple fix was deployed and took at all of blogger... the blogger team had to roll back, lose posts from yesterday and then roll forward the to the missing posts... I suspect what's gone is gone... so apologies if you were one of the guitar players who had some information of news posted on that day... I suppose they should really have ahd this fault on Friday 13th to make it really scary.
