Hedras Ramos: guitar 9 interview!

Dan McAvinchey: Hedras, what led to your interest in the guitar, and what did you do you advance your technical abilities?

Hedras Ramos: I initially began playing drums when I was 6, but at 8 my dad gave me my first guitar, then I switched to guitar. Something interesting is that my dad used to listen to guys like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and other great guitar players and that's how I was hooked into guitar, so the guitar was like more fun to me than drums.
When I was 13, I started studying the instrument very seriously, I got interested on harmony, different techniques, chords, scales, etc., studying about 7 to 8 hours daily and 12 or more on vacations, from books, DVDs and lots of CDs and cool records like Satriani's discography and any thing I could put my hands into. We could say that I am pretty much a self-taught musician.

Dan McAvinchey: Your latest CD, "Atoms And Space", was self-released. Was that your intention from the beginning, or did you try different independent labels first?

Hedras Ramos: I definitely would love to get a record deal, but right now I'm in the process of getting exposed to people, my manager (my dad) and I are working very hard on that, but for the moment we are selling my music in a lot of digital stores on the internet with world wide coverage. We are also selling physical CDs from sites like Guitar 9, CD Baby, from our own website and also at our concerts. I believe the Internet is a great way to sell your music and get your album available to the world, I think musicians know how tough is the music industry today. Now I'm in the process of writing a new album and I hope to find the right team and people for this next one, and a label of course. more

Jarle H Olsen: the guitar 9 interview

Dan McAvinchey: Your latest CD, "Quadrasonic", was self-released. Was that your intention from the beginning, or did you try different independent labels first?

Jarle H. Olsen: I never worried too much about it to be honest. It has always been a dream for me to release the exact music I feel and think, so the importance was just to reach that goal no matter what. It doesn't matter if you're on a label if they don't do anything apart from owning the rights to your music and absorbing all of your earnings. And that's what it's all about for record companies in the end - money. Of course, they are trying to make a living out of it. But hey, so are the artists.

Dan McAvinchey: How did you write the songs for "Quadrasonic"? Was it a collaborative approach, or did you work alone?

Jarle H. Olsen: To me, writing music is a very lonely and isolated experience. I'm a very moody person and can't come up with music if the circumstances are not exactly how I feel they should be. I guess I'm not a very social or fun person to be around when I'm into the writing process. But I like taking a lot of time thinking through every possibility, chords, phrasings, melody lines, etc. I'm a perfetionist, and a bit of a control freak (hehe).
Sure I could come together with a band and write a billion standardized tunes based on three chords, a chorus and a bridge and that's it, but that's not music to my ears. Music to me is something progressive, that stands out and has it's unique wibe, feel and atmosphere. So when you listen to it, you don't get an endless deja-vu.
I believe that if you're with a group of people writing music, it's much easier to let things go through due to the schedule.. And most people are afraid to have too strong opinions in a group. It can of course have its advantages too, but I prefer composing alone.
My buddies on the album did of course contribute to the overall sound with each of their unique styles, and I'm happy to be working with some of the best musicians. http://www.guitar9.com/interview164.html

Tom Hess: How To Choose The Most Effective Guitar Playing Exercises

How To Choose The Most Effective Guitar Playing Exercises
Would your guitar playing become a lot easier if you knew precisely what you should practice to achieve the results that you want? Do you feel pulled in dozens of different directions by books, videos and other guitar learning resources that all seem to offer a unique way of learning guitar? Are you confused about what to practice to become the musician you want to be?

From my experience of successfully helping hundreds of guitarists to reach their musical goals, I have found that most guitar players can easily find lots of general guitar practice materials on their own. Where many guitarists struggle is in knowing how to make sense out of all those materials and organize them into an effective guitar practice schedule.

If you can relate to the experiences above, then you are not alone. Fortunately, the solution to this problem is very realistic and is easier than you think. In this article I want to show you why so many guitarists don't know what they should practice on guitar, and how you can begin making much more progress in your guitar playing. more

Mike Campese: Creating Modes From Pentatonics

Creating Modes From Pentatonics
Welcome back! In this lesson I would like to show you how to construct the modes from pentatonic scales. A pentatonic scale can be any 5 note formula - for this lesson we will be focusing on the traditional major and minor ones. The modes that are derived from the major scales consists of 7 notes, so all you have to do is add two extra notes to your pentatonic scales to construct a mode. Most guitar players are familiar with pentatonic scales, a lot of them are still confused about the modes. This is a great way to apply the modes to your playing right away. Boguslaw Balcerak: Blood Of The Prophets

Taken from the album 'Boguslaw Balcerak's Crylord - Blood Of The Prophets' released 14 October 2011 on Lion Music.

http://www.lionmusic.com/cd/bloodoftheprophets.htm

Exploding out of Poland comes a new powerhouse of metal. Lion Music are delighted to welcome Boguslaw Balcerak's Crylord to the labels roster.

Led by the prestigious talents of guitarist Boguslaw Balcerak, 'Blood Of The Prophets' breathes new life into the neo-classical genre with 12 first class songs chock full of big riffs, dynamic rhythms, jaw dropping guitar solos and infectious vocal melodies from 3 of the most acclaimed vocalist in the field - Carsten 'Lizard' Schulz (Evidence One, ex Domain) and neo-classical legends Mark Boals (ex Malmsteen / Ring Of Fire) and Goran Edman (ex Malmsteen / Karmakanic).

Blood Of The Prophets' powerful music was inspired by the greats of neo-classical guitar and hard rock/heavy/power metal along with the epic qualities of film music. The classical influence of masters like Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin can also be heard at times in Boguslaw's delivery; yet the album is proof that it's possible to absorb these influences and not come out as a Malmsteen clone. With an effortless guitar style Boguslaw delivers both passion and power throughout the album providing the perfect backdrop for lyrics inspired by fantasy, mythology, bible, legends, love and feelings all expertly delivered by Schulz, Boals and Edman either individually or collectively.

Ronnie Montrose, Michael Lee Firkins: Good Rockin' Tonight

Live at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, CA Fri, September 9, 2011.
From Montrose's eponymous debut. Released in 1973, the record also introduced a young Sammy Hagar to the world, but the explosive aggression of Ronnie Montrose's biting guitar left no doubt as to why it was his name gracing the cover.
A rock-solid rhythm section featuring drummer Denny Carmassi and bassist Bill Church certainly didn't hurt, either, and unstoppable anthems such as this song ("Good Rockin' Tonight") would lay the ground rules for an entire generation of late-'70s California bands, most notably Van Halen.
