News: UK National Learn to Play Day 2016

On “Learn To Play Day”, the flagship event of the UK’s Music for All Charity, we invite the general public to come to one of the many participating venues in the UK and have a free “taster” lesson on a musical instrument.

Join us on 21 March 2015, for the UK-wide event which will once again offer the general public the chance to have a free ‘taster’ lesson on a musical instrument. In 2014, 117 venues put on events ranging from music shops to music services and even churches! People who have never played and people who used to play, all came on the day to try an instrument.

Derryl Gabel: Major 7th Drop2 Guitar Chords Here's a short clip from my instructional video on Major7th Drop2 chords.
You can order a copy here

In this video lesson I'll be focusing in on the construction of the Major7th Drop 2 chord, the inversions, and ways to practice them. Knowing and understanding these things will set a solid foundation for all the other 7th chords and will also pave the way for chord tone soloing. I show you specific practice methods that will allow you to grab these chords in every position of the guitar and will make learning the other drop2 7th chords a cake walk once this is mastered. This video includes neck diagrams in the PDF format. The video run time is approximately 27 minutes.

Recorded at Avatar Studios in New York, ON features a stellar line up of progressive and rock musicians - Keyboardist Adam Holzman (Miles Davis, Steven Wilson); bass player Bryan Beller (Joe Satriani, The Aristocrats); jazz/rock drummer Chad Wackerman (Frank Zappa, Allan Holdsworth, Steven Wilson) and special guests including vocalist Corey Glover (Living Colour), jazz/metal guitarist Alex Skolnick (Testament, Savatage, Ozzy Osbourne Band) and British saxophonist, flautist and clarinetist Theo Travis (Steven Wilson, Robert Fripp). Early in her career she toured with legendary jazz/blues organist Brother Jack McDuff. Her composing talents received attention when she won the ASCAP Gershwin Award for Music for Dance or Theatre in the mid 90’s. Her debut album Jane in 1998 received worldwide critical acclaim and the 2006 follow up See Jane Run was released on Alternity Records (home of Allan Holdsworth). In 2012 she released the progressive jazz/rock album Three. Jane also received widespread exposure playing in the Saturday Night Live Band.

Her band has played and toured internationally and live dates for the autumn of 2015 will be announced shortly.

Leading the campaign for the new album ON will be the opening track ‘Surprised’ with video footage supplied by Lasse Hoile.

Mika Tyyskä: Mr. Fastfinger - Great Blue Waves

Epic instrumental tune from the Spirit Rising -album. "Great Blue Waves" performed by: Mika Tyyskä - Guitar, Kai Hahto - Drums, Lasse Rantanen - Bass, Andrey Sazonov - underwater synths. I love reading your thoughts and comments, let me hear how this tune makes you feel. Thank you!

Initially composed as a jam backing for my Jam Track Central "Mika Tyyskä - Expressive Modes" package. This composition came out like water, all flowing. Once I came up with the main riff, everything fell into place like I was on autopilot. I was thinking of improvising the leads, but as I did some demo tapes to practice and develop ideas the main melodies came streaming on the first take (or second) and as it felt naturally perfect I had to keep it like that. The original Jam Track Central versio is shorter. Here a new middle part with the fish jaw jamming was composed with the "The Spirit of the Guitar Hunt" movie scene in mind. I actually worked on the composition/guitar part and the cartoon simultaniously. Also the epic outro solo is totally new. Of course this version also features way much better production and some fantastic performances by Kai, Lasse and Andrey.

I'm proud to have Kai Hahto, my friend playing here the drums. He's a musician who I really admire in many ways, I've been fortunate to play quite a few gigs him during the last 8 or 9 years I've known him. We had spoken about him doing some drumming for Mr. Fastfinger for a long time. He's currently busy with Nightwish, I'm glad he still found the time to do this.

Lasse Rantanen who's doing the bass here is the shaman of the group. He has a signature sound that has so much character, his playing brings warmth to the Mr. Fastfinger recordings. I've worked with Lasse for 20 years or something. The rest of the bass players in the world always seem to lack something that Lasse has. Big muffy magic power!

Guitar were recorder with my Ruokangas Custom Green Guitar. Hughes & Kettner Grandmeister gives us that mountain like tone! I might have used some pedals there too, but can't remember to be honest.

In the mid-1980s, Def Leppard catapulted to rock n’ roll superstardom with their blockbuster album Pyromania – until tragedy threatened to put a quick end to their rocket ascent. Now, surviving lead guitarist Phil Collen reveals the truth behind the mythology of the band with his memoir ADRENALIZED: MY LIFE IN DEF LEPPARD AND BEYOND (Atria Books; October 27, 2015/ ISBN 9781476751658/ $26.00), setting the record straight in a rags-to-riches story populated with biggest names in music history. A voyeuristic peek into the inner-sanctum of rock stardom, ADRENALIZED is more than the usual cautionary tale; Phil Collen – an unlikely rock star from the start -- offers an inspirational portrait of self-discipline and human resilience.

Tony MacAlpine: forced to cancel Asia, Australia and Europe on medical advice

Tony MacAlpine: It’s has been greatly disappointing for me, as this was the first time in my many years of professional music work that i have ever had to make such a tough decision. For me, playing is a necessary element of my daily life and function, and as discouraging as this has been for me, I am aware that it has truly been a very hard situation for my colleagues and professional associates to experience also.
We never really know why things happen to us in our lives and what reasons they happen for – at least not right away, but I am always in search of what lessons we are constantly being taught, and have learned to accept things as they are. I do know that I am blessed to have been able to contribute my art to the music scene, and more so to do it for you all. Full details

Truth In Shredding sends it's best wishes to Tony on a speedy recovery from his recent surgery.
