about
Internationally acclaimed New York guitarist and composer Oz Noy follows his provocative two-volume exploration and reinvention of his blues roots (Twisted Blues) with Who Gives a Funk, due out April 15th – a examination of classic funk and R&B grooves, spiked with his uniquely unhinged improvisational instincts. “Simple, funky music – but soulful,” is how Noy describes it, while acknowledging that simple is not synonymous with easy: The discipline and clarity these classic structures demand put even the finest musicians to the test, and Noy and his all-star cohorts deliver a remarkable program that uncovers intriguing new pathways through timeless forms.

Inspired by the funk-blues nexus of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s music of artists like Freddie King, James Brown, Albert Collins, Who Gives a Funk mixes concise, compelling original compositions with reimagining of vintage standards by Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Sam Cook, Charles Mingus, and even Thelonious Monk – mostly tracked live in the studio for maximum grit and spark. A core group of New York’s finest is augmented by an impressive array of guest appearances, including performances by John Medeski, Dweezil Zappa, funk pioneer Fred Wesley, Chris Potter, Robben Ford, Randy Brecker, Joe Bonamassa, members of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Double Trouble, and Living Color vocalist Corey Glover.

Through it all, Noy’s guitar is the connecting thread. Whether steering the band with incisive, stark rhythm work or soaring over the grooves with impeccable single-note leads that recall the graceful, nuanced inflection of a fine soul vocalist, Noy brilliantly walks a musical tightrope spanning the best of the past and the future. Surprising, danceable, and accessible, Who Gives a Funk is a powerfully heartfelt new statement from one of contemporary guitar’s great improvisational stylists.

News: PRS Guitars Private Stock Team Continues 20th Anniversary Celebration with February’s Guitar of the Month: The McCarty 594

PRS Guitars Private Stock Team Continues 20th Anniversary Celebration with February’s Guitar of the Month: The McCarty 594

(STEVENSVILLE, MD) February 16, 2016 – PRS Guitars Private Stock is celebrating their 20th Anniversary this year with the return to the program that started it all: Guitars of the Month. Each month in 2016, the Private Stock team will deliver a unique design in limited numbers, highlighting the detailed craftsmanship and exquisite materials that define Private Stock.

“At the time [1996], the original Guitars of the Month program was a way for us to experiment with new designs and features. To this day, that innovation and specialization is still at the heart of the Private Stock program, and we are very excited to try out some new ideas for our 20th Anniversary this year,” said Paul Reed Smith, PRS Guitars founder and Managing General Partner.

February’s Guitar of the Month is the McCarty 594. Named after Paul’s mentor, Ted McCarty, the McCarty 594 pays homage to vintage “Golden Era” instruments while incorporating modern build techniques for an instrument that is at once incredibly familiar and effortlessly playable.

John Mayer has one of the early prototypes for this model, and has this to say: “The 594 is the best new guitar I've played in years. It has a vintage heart and soul but without the technical limitations that usually come along with an old instrument. What good is an old guitar if you can't get all that feel out of the upper frets, or the intonation is off?” When asked about the guitar’s tone, Mayer added, “To hear that old PAF sound but be able to articulate the notes in a way that only modern manufacturing could allow is so exciting. This one's going all over my new record, because it sits so nicely between all of the sonic identities we all know and love. And it plays like a dream.”

There are several details that PRS has incorporated into the 594’s design that contribute to the guitar’s tone and feel, including

- A 24.594” scale length, just slightly longer than 24.5” and where the model gets its name

- “58/15 LT” pickups. LT meaning low turns, which give this guitar a sweet lower output tone

- 2 volume and 2 push/pull tone controls positioned so players can roll off both volume knobs at the same time, and with the added versatility of coil splits for more tonal options

- A new Pattern Vintage neck carve. This neck carve shares the same width measurements as PRS’s Pattern neck, but is slightly thicker front to back and features an asymmetrical carve with a little less meat on the treble side, a little more on the bass side of the neck.

- Tweaked Phase III tuners that have an added set screw to pull the tuner’s shaft, gear, and worm together, but with the tuner button taken out of play, to promote tone transfer from the string directly into the guitar itself with a little energy as possible being detracted.

Twenty six of these instruments will be made for February 2016, commemorating Private Stock’s 20th Anniversary. For full specifications and to hear the McCarty 594 in action, please visit, http://www.prsguitars.com/gom_february/. For more information on the Guitars of the Month program, please visit http://www.prsguitars.com/privatestock.

The original Guitars of the Month were cased between December 1994 and March 1996. They provided the opportunity to experiment with new ideas and led directly to the creation of the Private Stock program, with the first “official” Private Stock instrument casing on April 19, 1996.

News: PRS Guitars Announces 8th “Experience PRS” Event

PRS Guitars Announces 8th “Experience PRS” Event

Guitar Manufacturer to host Ultimate Guitar Festival for Guitarists and Music Lovers

(STEVENSVILLE, MD) February 19, 2016 – PRS Guitars has announced the 8th Experience PRS event will be held at the PRS Guitars factory on June 3rd and 4th, 2016. The event, billed as the Ultimate Guitar Festival for Guitarists and Music Lovers, will bring together a unique combination of authorized PRS dealers and distributors, worldwide press, celebrated PRS artists, and PRS customers and enthusiasts for two days of fun, education, concerts, and appreciation. From its humble beginnings in 2007 with an attendance of around 800 people, the event is expected to attract close to 3,000 attendees this year from all over the globe.

This June, PRS will once again open its doors and create an exciting and interactive schedule, including factory tours, artist clinics, product demonstrations, hands-on opportunities (including staining your own piece of curly maple to take home), a jam stage for guests to sit in with the house band and show their skills, and star-studded evening concerts. With an incredible selection of PRS instruments and amplifiers on display, Experience has also become a destination event for players to pick their next PRS guitar or amplifier. Recognizing this, PRS is building several unique guitars and amplifiers for the 2016 event - details of which will be announced at a later date.

In addition to these opportunities, PRS is also booking two day stages for Saturday with alternating performances by a wide variety of PRS artists. By adding this more aggressive concert element, Experience PRS will expand beyond an open house for fans of the brand to have a “backstage pass” at the factory and become a unique concert destination for all music lovers.

“Experience PRS 2016 is going to be an extravaganza focused on the astounding array of musical instruments we offer and the opportunity to meet some of the people that make them. Add beer trucks, world class artists on multiple stages, opportunities to jam with the pros, and more PRS Guitars in one spot than you’ve ever seen before and I think it may be fair to say that this is one event you shouldn’t miss” stated PRS Sales Manager, Jim Cullen.

For more information on the event and registration, please visit www.prsguitars.com/experience.

Brian Maillard: 20 Shuffle Building Licks

20 Shuffle Building Licks

Exceptional guitarist, Brian Maillard returns with a fantastic set of creative rock licks designed to up your shuffle-game and bring a new lease of rhythmic vitality to your rock solos!

Rhythmic control is one of the most important aspects of music, and being able to play to (or with) a shuffle groove is an integral part of being a well rounded musician.

Adrian Clark (the brain that brings you our wonderful transcriptions, and text notes) describes the shuffle in this pack: 'The groove in 'Feeling of Wellbeing' is a 16th note shuffle, so the swing feel is applied on 16th notes. That means instead of splitting each beat into 4 equal notes, we have long-short-long-short. That means you'll also see a lot of sextuplets - each half-beat is divided into triplets, giving six notes per beat.'

Brian's licks are designed to simultaneously have you practising how to play over a shuffle groove and at the same time integrate the ideas into a creative environment such as an awesome lick or solo. We often tend to practise ideas in an isolated and unmusical setting which then breeds unmusical and incomplete ideas when we try to apply them. These licks circumvent that issue by integrating them into usable ideas immediately!

Technique-wise these licks will have you practising string skipping, 3 note-per-string legato runs, pedal notes, creative slides, wide interval licks, bending, open strings, vibrato and much more! On the theory side we've got Mixolydian, Major and Minor Pentatonic, Aeolian and Chromatic scales, as well as phrase building and melodic variation, tension and release, following chord changes and a whole host of other creative melodic and rhythmic concepts!

Note that this is different from some of our previous packs that include play throughs, in that not ALL of the licks stitch together into the full song. In this package Brian has also taken half of the licks from this release and shown you how you can use them in the full context of a solo by including some of them in the full play through of his song 'Feeling of Wellbeing'.

As ever, we have included everything you need to practise and perfect the material in this package. There are video and audio tracks for you to watch/listen and study, accurately transcribed TAB/notation for you to analyse and master, and backing tracks for everything! We've even included some text notes to help you really get these parts down!

Malek Ben Arbia: Myrath - Believer - Great progressive metal from France and Tunisia

MYRATH (meaning "Legacy") is a Metal band from France and Tunisia, a small country well known for its resort areas on the Mediterranean coast but certainly not for its Metal bands, yet in just few years what started out as a teenage cover band, has became a relatively well known and respected band by the international Metal community.

The first two years playing numerous area shows, mainly Death Metal covers, next two years exclusively SYMPHONY X covers.
Early 2005 creating and releasing independently "Double Face", a self produced fan EP.

Early 2006 the band got an opportunity to open for ROBERT PLANT and ADAGIO playing for over 7OOO rabid music fans and meeting their future producer Adagio’s keyboard player Kevin Codfert. With the valuable support of Kevin, MYRATH immediately recorded their first real album "Hope”, the band was signed by the French label Brennus-Music and “Hope” was released in 2007 to France being received very well by critics that predicted a bright future for the band and led to a number of high profile festival performances in Europe.

Their follow up album "Desert Call" released early 2010 by French label XIII BIS RECORDS (Sony distribution) and in the rest of the world by the prestigious American Label Nightmare Records (Sony/Red/MRI) was a second turning point in MYRATH carrier in terms of improved notoriety and increasing their fan base, garnering an even wider interest of media and promoters. "Desert Call" offered a new style of Progressive Power Metal consisting of a mix between traditional Tunisian music and Metal enhanced by a balanced Arabian and western was received exceptionally well by critics putting the band on yet another level.

Third MYRATH album "Tales Of the Sands" was released in late 2011, dubbing their new sound as “Oriental Metal” the band was again launched into even higher status, with sales and opportunities growing finding themselves on opening touring slots with major artists DREAM THEATER, HIM, WASP, ORPHAND LAND, TARJA and touring around the world (United Arab Emirates, USA, India, France, Spain, Morocco…) over a few years with many high profile festival performances, the band also made their first live appearance on US soil at ProgPowerUSA the premier progressive metal festival in 2013, and headlining ProgPowerEU in Netherlands to raving fans.

Their new album “Legacy” promises to rocket the band even higher! Myrath have already secured medium slot on the new SYMPHONY X tour in Europe for early 2016, and will secure a major tour for North America, Asia and the Middle East shortly.
