Magnus Olsson says:
Haven't been here a lot lately, but I hope you forgive me for this commercial stop :-)

The picture is a full page commercial from Sweden’s only guitar magazine, Fuzz (out next month)

I just wanted to say that I’m doing an Ibanez/DiMarzio clinic here in Sweden the 23th of October to the 1st of November. So I hope I see all you Swedish (or anyone ells having a chance to come) at any of the shows.
We will bring a big selection, including the new 8 string, of high level Ibanez.
It is a great chance to compare different models, since you never really see a selection like this in a shop here in Sweden.
These are some of the guitars we will bring (some of the older models are my own private guitars, used just because they already have my setup).
More guitar will be added.

It will also be a chance to talk to people from Ibanez in Sweden, win prices, learn about guitar setup and hear loads of music. It will also be loads of talking about different DiMarzio pickups. We are working on having a bunch of the same model guitar but with different pickups.
Hope I see you there, come up and say hi if you are there.

Petrucci forum discuss Brett Garsed in Guitar Techniques...Magnus Olsson gives his inside view on the technique:

Hey, Guys. This is an interesting subject, so I had to write a bit.

I would say that this “hammer-on only” is more of a way of thinking about how to move your fingers then an actual way of playing; I feel that it would be impossible to do on a descending line without any sort of pull off involved. It seem to me that it sort of gets to be a combination of both an hammer-on and a pull off, both done more or less at the same time.

The first finger is doing a light pull off to the finger that is doing a hammer-on, sort of. It would, as I see it, be impossible to get a fluid sound if you are doing a descending hammer-on from a higher note, it would be a short moment of silence between the notes (silent when you lift the finger to make “room” for the other one to hammer-on).

Having studied Bretts technique very up close for a long time would I say that he does the same. The reason to think like this “hammer-on only”, for me that is, is maneuverability, speed, accuracy, separation, stretch and most of all, pitch.

Doing a traditional pull off makes the note go a bit sharp just before it lets go and fall down to the next note, witch to my ears, can be a bit annoying sometimes (especially if you play slow).

My goal when playing legato or tapping is to have as few fingers on the fretboard at the same time as possible, witch sort of gives a combination between hammer-on (down) and pull offs on descending lines.

It radically increase the stretch if I lift up my index finger when I slam down my second finger, lifting that up when I slam down my third finger, and so on, on a up going line. Doing that gives me having to slam them down again on the way back.
Here are two short (no sound) movies that sort of show what I mean.
Not lifting fingers: http://www.magnusolsson.com/mp3/still.AVI
Lifting fingers: http://www.magnusolsson.com/mp3/move01.AVI

For does having few fingers on the board also help my speed a lot. Try putting your hand on a table surface, sort of like if you are about to play piano, hold all your finger tips down at the surface and try tapping as fast you with your second finger (or any finger). Then try lifting all your fingertips up from the surface and try tapping as fast as you can with your second finger again, the speed is a lot higher (at least for me).
I feel I get this speed boost while playing too. Having that extra speed gives me more control when not playing at maximum speed.

Having few fingers on the board also makes it easier to change direction in my lines, and also makes it easier for bigger interval skips (since my loosed fingers can start moving to the new note faster, earlier then if I keep them on the board)... Magnus

Dave B spends some time in the backwoods hunting out the rare and endangered Magnus Olsson...trapping him and asking difficult questions that you can read at instrumentalcase.com

Magnus says:
That is a really hard question; I seriously have no idea what to call my music. I try not to think about styles and just do what naturally comes out. But if I have to, and being under gun threat, then I would call it rock with a fusion attitude. It is not jazzy enough to be fusion, it is not jazzy at all, and it is not rocky enough to be rock. Some songs are more or less shred guitar, I guess, I call those tunes for “circus guitar” when I do clinics. So I think “circus music” is a good name, things that aren’t meant too seriously. Can I get away with just calling it music?

Magnus Olsson...still deep undercover inthe backwood of France touting Ibanez equipment to all and sundrr, returns to the guitar news with this interview from those fine fellows at alloutguitar.com.

Magnus continues his French tour until end of March then returns to Sweden for a couple of weeks of shows. I'm still trying to get those nice people at Ibanez to remember that England is part of Europe and get Magnus on to these shores...

27-11-2006:
Hello webmaster type people...can you help Magnus out?... He's still looking for a nice webmaster to look after his cool web site...those interested please use his email form...I would do it if I had time...

Magnus Olsson has added a guest solo on the new Maze Of Torment album called Hidden Cruelty. and as magnus says:
Always great fun to play a style so far from what I normaly do. So a massive thanks to the guys in the band for having me in.

Magnus Olsson is also in the middle of a negotiation for a new 100 gig show in France from December 2006 until late April 2007....any chance of an England date ;o) ?

Also check out Magnus's impressive photo gallery

Magnus Olsson would love to you there, so get there if you get the chance to witness this great player.

Magnus Olsson has also been chosen, together with Mattias IA Eklundh of Freak Kitchen, to test drive a new tremolo system that changes all the ideas of what a tremolo can do and can't do. It is called TremoLogic and is made and invented by the Swedish company Sonoinvent.

Magnus: There are so many new things you can do with this that it really should have another name then a tremolo. One of the biggest differences to a traditional trem is that you have one tremolo-arm to each string and that all the string are completely non affected by each other. Trust me, you will hear more about this.

06-06-2006:

Background:
Magnus Olsson, who is he I hear you say? Well see and hear the most impressive Poco Impetuoso [11 Mb wmv] or "Why god, Why?"[mpg] and then you'll know who and you'll know why.

If that's not enough check out "None Secret Hat Tower" [mp3] which features the Holdsworthian alien keyboard hands of the Über talented Lale Larson . The two play a highly original statically charged fusion storm, raining down warm musical droplets, filling an already over full river of notes.

You can find out more about this new talent his history from the Magnus Olsson web site . I'm sure we'll be hearing more from Magnus in the near future, if you check out his studio and gear

Long live the third wave of European fusion guitar.
