Bill Bruford, Kazumi Watanabe, Jeff Berlin: UNT (Kazumi Watanabe, The Spice Of Life, 1987)

I think titles are important when it comes to instrumental music, so I’m surprised and sorry I didn’t ask this track’s composer, Japanese guitarist Kazumi Watanabe, what UNT meant, or stood for. I haven’t a clue what was running through his mind when he wrote it or named it, and that’s often helpful in deciding how to play it. I’ve written a little about my time with Kazumi in other video descriptions on this channel (see ‘Lim-Poo’, or a ‘drum solo’ from the Spice of Life tour), so I have little to add on this song from the same tour, other than how young and healthy everyone looks. Spare a thought for those musicians who are not so lucky, the men and women who are not on stage, silenced, invisible, and who would so like to be there.

The hazards surrounding musical instrument practice are many and varied. Painful musculo-skeletal issues include overuse injuries and hand and finger problems. Many drummers are particularly concerned with hearing loss and carpal tunnel syndrome, the drummer’s version of writer’s cramp. Musicians’ careers are threatened when they can no longer play their instrument because of pain and dysfunction. The difference between 95% recovery of an injured finger and 100% recovery may mean the difference between a world-class career and obscurity.

Musicians’ lifestyles can have significant impact on well-being and mental health. Financial security and sporadic work patterns are surely significant sources of stress, but the greatest pressure comes from maintaining standards of playing to a level that meets the musician’s own ideals. General well-being comes from a sense of direct control over right work, with observable (or audible) outcomes. The psychology of performance ‘wellness’ suggests that greatest performer happiness lies in those areas that welcome personal expressive input and which give the performer a sense of control over their own performance.

One music performance counsellor I know says that the least frequent visitor to his consulting rooms is the jazz performer, which he surmises is because the jazz performer typically exercises the greatest control over the performance, and is thus able to inject something of him- or herself in to it. His most frequent visitor, by genre, is the classical musician. We might generalize that the more choice and control individuals are able to exercise within their practice, the less likely it is to make them ill. Happily, I don’t think I ever missed berlia gig in my life.

Allan Holdsworth, Jeff Berlin: Bruford - The Sahara Of Snow

Making a successful or happy group has much to do with a balance of wants and needs. Sure, we all want it to be a huge success, but what do the individuals need to make them stick around? They all need the basics of course: a steady flow of reliable bookings, medium-quality hotels and clean sheets, and a leader who pays what he said he’d pay when he said he’d pay it. In this band we could manage that. But we all also needed a musical challenge. I needed a co-writer in Dave Stewart; a young Jeff Berlin needed to bring his unusual talents to an international audience; Allan Holdsworth needed the sort of textural support for his playing that keyboardist Dave Stewart was a master at; and the band needed the stellar soloist, Allan Holdsworth. Hey presto! Everyone’s cool; everyone enjoys the ride while it lasts Now I know all this, but it was more luck than judgement that got us there in 1979.

Bass Icon Jeff Berlin Launches Pledge Music Campaign
For New Tribute Album To Legendary Jack Bruce

Bass icon Jeff Berlin has launched a Pledge Music Campaign on August 18th for a new tribute album to legendary Jack Bruce titled “Jeff Berlin Plays Jack Bruce: Songs For A Wailer”. Jack Bruce, best known for his work with classic rock legends Cream, as well as his critically acclaimed solo work, sadly passed away in 2014. Jeff Berlin, who has been called “the greatest bass player in the world”, was a personal friend of Jack's and felt the time was right for a tribute.

Says Jeff, “Recording the music of Jack Bruce will be the most emotional recording project of my career. Jack was the greatest musical influence I ever had. As an impressionable 14 year-old bass player, I was stunned by Cream, literally in awe of the music that came from them. And, in the center of the music were these strange and wonderful bass lines weaving in and out of the key, reaching for resolutions and finding them, again, and again. Jack’s playing was a living evolving improvisation. I simply never heard a bass player that had the breadth of originality like Jack had. In fact, I still haven’t! Jeff Berlin Plays Jack Bruce: Songs for a Wailer' isn’t a cover album, not in the literal sense. Except for a couple of tunes from his Cream period (arranged in ways that should surprise people) most of the songs on this album come from other periods in Jack’s musical life before and after Cream. This recording, to me, will be a new revamp of some of those songs, some of the best music that I heard from one of the greatest musicians of the last fifty years.”

Guest performers are:
Ginger Baker on drums
Chad Smith on drums
Dennis Chambers on drums
Paul Shaffer on Hammond organ
Allan Holdsworth on guitar
Joe Satriani on guitar
Ron Thal 'Bumblefoot' on guitar
Nick Moroch on guitar

Guest list is still being expanded. Final guest artist list to be announced soon.

Known worldwide for his innovative style, Jeff Berlin has graced bandstands and recordings with legendary players like Bill Bruford, Dennis Chambers, Neil Peart, Billy Cobham, John McLaughlin, Scott Henderson, Allan Holdsworth, and has led bands and recorded his own albums for nearly 30 years. He has recorded for vocalists Patti Austin and kd Lang; he has traversed the progressive rock realm with former YES members Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe and is the only electric bassist to have played with jazz pianist Bill Evans. Jeff famously turned down an offer to join rockers VAN HALEN. Jeff is also hailed outside the usual musician ranks: Actor Gary Sinise (also a bassist) is one of his biggest fans, and renowned boxing trainer and ESPN commentator Teddy Atlas refers to Jeff as “the best in the business.” Jaco Pastorius considered Berlin a better soloist than he was. Geddy Lee called Jeff “the best bass player on the planet”. Jack Bruce said that Jeff “was the greatest bass player I ever heard!” From straight ahead Jazz to Fusion to Prog-Rock, Jeff is famous for playing anything, always at the very highest level of proficiency and musicality.

“Jeff Berlin Plays Jack Bruce: Songs For A Wailer” will be co-produced with Jeff Berlin by New York based producer John McCracken. John is a gold and platinum record producer/musician/engineer with over 100 recordings produced for major and independent record labels as well as TV and film. Debut solo album by Italian guitarist Frank Pilato,
playing the music of drummer/composer Andrea Marcelli,
for a very special project, with a story long over 20 years...

After recording two critic acclaimed albums for Verve/Polygram "Silent Will"
in 1989 and for Verve and Lipstick Rec. "Oneness" in 1991, both featuring guitarist
Allan Holdsworth, Andrea Marcelli composed the music for "Stories".
This new project was partially recorded in June 1993 engineered by Allan Holdsworth
in his newly built Brewery studio in Vista, California. The music was envisioned by
Marcelli for an electric guitar as main soloist. Holdsworth could not play for contractual problems so the album was not finished.

During the following years Marcelli kept playing Jazz world wide and moved from
Los Angeles to New York in 1997 and then to Berlin in 2001, bringing with him the
project "Stories".

Some years later he finally came into contact with Italian young and talented electric
guitarist Frank Pilato, who also lived and played for a while in Los Angeles.
Frank took the challenge and responsibility to successfully record and finally finish
the album, in 2014, together with engineer Matteo Guasti at the Labella Studio.
Pilato wanted also to contribute with a new composition and recorded with Andrea
an inedit guitar/drums duo!
The band includes an exceptional rhythm section with Marcelli's long time collaborator
pianist Mitchel Forman, bassists Gary Willis and Jeff Berlin!

A very special project which embrace over 20 years of personal "stories"...

Kazumi Watanabe (Guitar); Jeff Berlin (Bass); Virgil Donati (Drums)
Brand New Release from Japanese Guitarist Kazumi Watanabe. Known for his fiery playing and great albums over the years, this new one features the great Jeff Berlin on Bass and Virgil Donati on Drums.
Kazumi learned to play guitar from Sadanori Nakamure, one of Japan's grandmaster guitarists. Kazumi released his first recording in 1971, and quickly became a promising guitarist in his own right. In 1979, he formed an all-star band with some of Japan's leading studio musicians, and recorded the album Kylyn, which is considered a masterpiece in fusion music.
During the eighties Watanabe released a considerable number of jazz-rock albums. To Chi Ka (1980), with its funk influences and bright sound, is probably the most famous early title. Some latter albums, such as Mobo Club (1983) and Mobo Splash (1985) display more experimental tendencies. But the most famous of all is Spice of Life (1987) which is done in a strongly melodic style. A DVD has been issued from the tour in which the music was played with drummer Bill Bruford and bassist Jeff Berlin (who also play on the studio record). In the 1990s Kazumi assembled an all-Japanese line-up called Resonance Vox (Vagabonde Suzuki on bass, Rikiya Higahihara on drums, Tomohiro Yahiro on percussion). This band has released several adventurous fusion albums.
Watanabe has worked with numerous musicians such as Steve Gadd, Tony Levin, Jeff Berlin, Bill Bruford, Sly and Robbie, Wayne Shorter, Patrick Moraz, Marcus Miller, Richard Bona, and Peter Erskine. Since 1996, he has been a visiting professor of music at Senzoku Gakuen College. He endorses Steinberger and Paul Reed Smith guitars, and has been chosen Best Jazzman 24 years in a row by Swing Journal's annual poll.

Jeff Berlin (bass); Richard Drexler (acoustic bass, piano); Mike Clark (drums)

A legend of the Electric Bass, JEFF BERLIN is considered by many to be THE finest Electric Bass virtuoso in the world. He is universally hailed as a true innovator by fellow musicians (like Jaco Pastorius, Marcus Miller, Billy Sheehan and countless others) and by listeners alike.

On his RANDOM ACT RECORDS debut, Jeff offers a set of sizzling standards from the jazz repertoire, including tunes by Wayne Shorter, Bill Evans, Benny Golson and Pat Metheny. Joined by the multi-talented RICHARD DREXLER (on Acoustic Bass and Piano) and renowned Drummer MIKE CLARK, the trio illustrates a complete knowledge of their instruments and of the songbook. The combination of Acoustic and Electric Basses presents a unique texture; Berlin's distinctive Electric voice ''sings'' the melodies. With Drexler switching to and from the Piano on each track, the trio has the sonic impact of four players.

Low Standards represents the HIGHEST standards of musicality, soulful energy and distinctive virtuosity. All music lovers will be enthralled by these standards - the project is a Bass wizard's ultimate nod to the Jazz masters.
