10 GUITARISTS YOU SHOULD KNOW (Part 2)##

Keith Whalen: Bach Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 (bars 72-101?)

Sharing from Instagram. Too fast after hearing Perrahia's recording just now but I was probably listening to Gould!

Keith Whalen: Charles Beriot and Bach - stunning electric guitar interpretations

An excerpt from Charles Beriot violin Caprice/Scene "La Fougue" Op. 109. When I first heard it I was interested in the energy of the piece but transcribing it has been hard because there are quite a few leaps; perfect intervals can also suck to play at this tempo and there are plenty of them, including unison notes. "Do I barre, stretch along a string, or skip one altogether?

My index is sprained and one ham-handed take is all I could muster. Guess I'll play some Mario Maker.

Keith Whalen: the wailing Facebook Guitar Licks (compilation)

Here are a few licks (12 minutes lol) from a variety of videos I've uploaded to my Facebook page over the past few years.

Keith Whalen: Practicing a finger-twisting section of Alkan's Prelude Op. 31 No. 24

Practicing a finger-twisting section of Alkan's Prelude Op. 31 No. 24. I'm working on this piece currently but I have to start getting this section down before playing through it entirely because of how the passing tones make it so hard to memorize and execute! And the 54 bars that precede this section are 32nd notes, so by the time you get there you're already suffering! Alkan was a beast.

Keith Whalen: Raked Licks Pt. II

Another 9 examples with some raking, sweeping, and some diatonic passages with larger intervals. There's also two extended pentatonic examples - one minor, one major - with raking, slides, and groupings of four notes. Tabs already done, just not uploaded to the blog.

Keith Whalen: Parts from: Czerny Op. 299 No. 8, Alkan Inflexibilité, Keith Interval Etude

Couple clips of Czerny, Alkan, and my own etude, which sort of rips from Liszt's Vision (transcendental etude no. 6).

Keith Whalen: Extended Arpeggios Part II - lots of wild stretches and techniques for the advanced player

*Please take the time to read the information below and share some constructive criticism in the comments!*

Fellow arpeggiators,

Here is the second instalment of a series I'll be calling "Extended Arpeggios" where I take some classical influences and incorporate some of my own improvised approaches to playing longer arpeggio sequences. Most of these licks are written down beforehand and then changed as I see fit during the recording process. I've always enjoyed playing arpeggios but over the years I've tried to add different colours and create different techniques that embellish the sound being generated. The end game is always to expand the breadth of what is possible on the instrument and to break away from the traditional shapes that rock/metal/shred players generally use (3, 4, and 5 string shapes).

Classical music is a passion of mine, so a lot of the influence comes from that world. This series is somewhat inspired by Felix Blumenfeld's piano etudes and even Chopin's Op. 10 No. 1, where longer arpeggios finish outside of an octave's reach, giving the impression of moving both up and down throughout.

There are some wild stretches and a lot of the techniques are for the advanced player, so listen to your hands and try your best to use smaller warm-up shapes before causing any kind of damage (I've had tendinitis before and it's terrible).

I will begin sharing tabs on my blog page. I have opted to monetize my channel because I feel as though its merited, though my aim will always be to get free material - which I hope will be both unique and beneficial - into the hands of players who happen upon the channel. Please leave me some feedback about the video quality, the content, ways to better communicate the material, and so on.

Keith Whalen: Extended Arpeggios

Hey guys,
Some more arpeggios for you! What else is new?

I'm usually looking for a theme when I play guitar and decide to upload licks. This time it is once again wide ranging arpeggios, but the twist is that they involve very independent fingerings. I played these for a Facebook video I once uploaded and I had to go back and explore the tab... what a challenge playing your own creations can be sometimes. These gave me a good workout and they can be pretty painful to fret. Always warm up before doing any crazy stretching! I will blog the tabs!

Keith Whalen - Some Lickin'

Rick, you're a monster! I thought I had this lick down better last night but maybe it was just the time messing with my head. I have a good idea how he plays the top notes with hybrid picking but I just can't do it at tempo like he does. I'm more of an alternate picker, so this kind of stuff is a real challenge for me. I think I've done it justice but there may be a few notes that are out of place in comparison to the original. Thanks for the inspiration, Mr. Graham!

PS: I didn't do the hybrid picking lick at the end because someone already posted it!

Keith Whalen: Weird Interval Arpeggios - guitar and piano!

I was fooling around on the piano and trying to come up with some bizarre arpeggios with lesser played intervals. After finding a few cool ones I decided to see how they could be applied to the guitar! Some of them are very playable and translate well to both alternate picking and sweeping, but some are too spacious and gave me a hard time.

Keith Whalen: wailing for sheer boredom.

Couple things I filmed over the course of the day out of sheer boredom. There are some electric guitar licks, piano noodlings, acoustic gypsy-jazz ideas and a look at my scale board/tabs. There is also a clutch kill on radiation in COD: Black Ops.

Keith Whalen: looking for stimuli outside of guitars

Although I haven't denuded the Holy Grail of guitar lickery, I did stumble across a beautiful slew of arpeggio ideas while digesting Felix Blumenfeld's piano Etude Op. 3 No. 1. In all sincerity, I can only attribute the first example to the etude, but with the beauty of the work resounding in my head I went on a hunt for new sounds. At new costs, too.

One thing of significant importance is to look for stimuli outside of guitars, guitar playing and guitar players. Or, at times, even outside of music! How will I tackle the arpeggio formations of Paganini or Wieniawski? Is Blumenfeld, Henselt or Alkan playable on our instrument and how? How can I duplicate piano, violin or vocal ornamentation? All of these questions are valid and will arise as you broaden your musical intake, especially if you attempt to translate the language onto the guitar. more
