Jason Becker, Peter Hodgson: Seymour Duncan Jason Becker Perpetual Burn Humbucker reviewed by I Heart Guitar

Seymour Duncan Jason Becker Perpetual Burn Humbucker -
I installed a Perpetual Burn in my Ibanez RG550 (a roadflare-red 20th Anniversary model). I kept the stock single coil pickup in the middle position for now, and added a Seymour Duncan SH-1n ’59 Model in the neck position. The first thing I noticed about the Perpetual Burn was how it seemed to embody much of what I love about the JB but with more dynamic sensitivity and less power in the low end. The mids aren’t as honky either, with more of an emphasis on upper mids rather than ‘middle mids.’ It’s perfect for hard rock and blues rock, but also ideally suited to my personal favourite metal tones – think the rich, woody tones of the JB on Megadeth’s ‘Youthanasia,’ but shifted a little towards Eddie Van Halen’s famous ‘Brown Sound.’ It’s easy to generate pinch harmonics, and palm-muted notes are well-defined and chunky. - See more at: http://iheartguitarblog.com/2014/06/review-seymour-duncan-jason-becker-perpetual-burn-humbucker.html#sthash.Vwf9jrWF.O937sZMa.dpuf

Peter Hodgson,Joe Satriani: When I Heart Guitar met I am Guitar

Peter Hodgson: Mr I Heart Guitar
I look back to just a few months ago... I run headlong into  Mr I Heart Guitar... we have to meet half the way around from each other... in Los Angeles at NAMM.. Peter is more lucky than me though... Joe Satriani flies out to Melbourne to get a once in a lifetime jam with fellow guitar blogger and uber digger Peter Hodgson!

Peter Hodgson: This is me (Peter Hodgson - hi) jamming with Joe Satriani at his masterclass in Melbourne, Australia presented by Thump Music on April 13, 2013. You may have to squint your ears a bit to hear me but hey, I'm stoked that there's even a video of this. I'm playing the provided jam rig - an Ibanez JS2400 through a Hughes & Kettner TriAmp - while Joe rocks his Ibanez JS2410 through his signature Marshall JVM410JS head. Thanks to Julien for the video!

Peter Hodgson: Send I Heart Guitar to NAMM

Our StoryI started the I Heart Guitar blog in 2008 with the aim of providing a positive place for guitarists to hang out, share knowledge, learn about the latest and greatest in gear, and see what their favourite players, bands and brands are up to. The site has grown to around 45,000 readers per month as of June 2011.
For the past two years I’ve attended the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) trade show in Anaheim, California, but funds are tight and airfares from Australia to California are incredibly expensive now – in fact, they’ve doubled since last year, and it now costs more than $3000 to fly from Australia to Los Angeles and back, compared to $1500 return last year!
This is where you come in: If you’ve enjoyed I Heart Guitar’s previous NAMM coverage in 2010 and 2011, if you’ve dug the reviews and interviews or if you like checking out the Cool Gear Alerts, maybe you would consider contributing to my airfare and accommodation for NAMM in 2012. Every little bit helps me to bring you killer NAMM coverage from an impartial, reliable source .

Peter Hodgson: jemsite interview!

Peter Hodgson from iheart guitar interviewed... here's a snippet
Who are some of your guitar and music influences?

Aside from the obvious ones like Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Dave Mustaine, Nuno Bettencourt, Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert and Eddie Van Halen, my biggest influences are Frank Zappa, Mike Keneally and David Bowie. While the other guys influence my guitar playing to various degrees, Zappa, Keneally and Bowie influence me by giving me inspiration for my entire approach to music.

You’re already a journalist. Why the urge to start a guitar blog?

It started because I realized I had a couple of years worth of reviews and interviews from Mixdown Magazine which weren’t likely to be read by anyone after each issue’s month-long run ended. Mrs I Heart Guitar, an avid blog reader, suggested I put them online. The blog allows me to expand upon articles that were originally written for the magazine, as well as writing fresh new content. Sometimes it works the other way around too, and material from the blog will make its way into Mixdown.

Does actually playing guitar give you an edge in your music journalism?

I guess it gives me a level of insight into my interview subjects that non-playing writers don’t have, and I find that a good way to loosen up an interview is to throw in a particularly geeky guitar question relatively early on. Sometimes you only get 15 or 20 minutes for a phone interview and you’ve really gotta think on your feet to get a connection with the artist in that time. When I interviewed John McLaughlin, it was only a 15 minute chat but I got a lot out of him by being upfront with him that I was just beginning to get into fusion, both as a listener and as a player. He was only too happy to talk about fusion and improvisation from that perspective and I feel it made for a pretty interesting interview
