I realised I could use my new camera and tripod to record my videos for youtube, so I gave it a crack tonight, and noodled over Dave Brubeck's "Take 5" for the test.

I haven't picked up the guitar for a bit, so I was getting rather itchy fingers. I decided to noodle about over this backing track for Blue Jean Blues - which ended rather abruptly, taking me by surprise ;-)

Here's an updated version of my new instrumental called "Hide in the Sun". I had just started writing it when I heard about Ronnie James Dio being hospitalised - and then dying :'( so it's a sort of a tribute to him \m/ (even though musically it's got close to nothing in common with him)
The lead guitar is my Ash Customworks "Zakk" custom: http://www.ashcustomworks.com. I used my AMT Electronics Fatal Tube and in Garageband I used LAConvolver to apply impulse responses of a Marshall JCM2000. The harmony guitars were also the Zakk but using my AMT California Sound, and the clean backing guitars were using my Ash Customworks mostly-custom "Catherine". Oh, and the dirty rhythm guitars were using a JCM-ish patch I created with the standard amp simulation in Garageband.

Jon from Guitarnoize is running a competition - an anti-shred competition. It's a nice backing track, so I had a noodle over it.
I used my Ash Customworks mostly-custom guitar ( http://www.ashcustomworks.com ) with my AMT Fatal Tube, into my iMac, running Garageband. LAConvolver applied impulse responses of a Marshall JCM2000, and I stuck on a delay in software as well.

This is a piece I wrote a few years back to be the opener for my set at a meeting of the Guitar Association of New Zealand; I wanted something up-tempo and rocky, but not heavy. I ended up with this lydian thing, which reminded me a bit of Andy Timmons, and to a lesser extent, Joe Satriani - so I was quite happy, really.
I'm not too happy with the solo in this recording, but the rest went down quite well, so I kept it. I hope you like it. 8)

Here's one of my favourite John Petrucci solos: from about the 8 min 30 mark in Learning to Live, off their awesome second album "Images and Words". Short but sweet, and I love the sliding triplet bit. I also found it very hard to play, though it's not especially fast.
