News: iPhone application, Gibson join the app store

Gibson Guitar Releases Its Own Free To Download App Exclusively For The iPhone and iPod Touch from the Apple App Store

Nashville, TN (Vocus/PRWEB ) March 2, 2010 -- Gibson Guitar, the world’s premiere musical instrument manufacturer and leader in music technology, is proud to announce the highly anticipated launch of the Gibson Guitar App. This free to download App will be available exclusively for all Apple iPhone and iPod Touch users directly from the Apple App Store 25th February 2010. This is one App every guitarist and fan of Gibson Guitar must own. Over the past two years over 3 Billion Apps have been downloaded around the world, the Gibson Guitar App cements Gibson’s reputation as the industry’s leader in innovation and music technology.

Sammy Hagar, Latin superstar Luis Fonsi, and Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger show us their App-itude
The Gibson Guitar App includes a number of special features, such as a traditional chromatic tuner which starts in “All Notes” mode that tracks whatever is played. Owners of the App can choose a tuning on the “Mode” page so the tuner will only track notes for that particular tuning. Also included is a standard chromatic tuner, a simple tuner which allows less advanced users to tune to Standard tuning Open G, Open D etc by touching the key. For iPhone users, the Gibson headstock inlay will automatically change color indicating if the string is sharp, flat or in tune. For iPod Touch users they can turn the “Play Notes” option on so they can hear the appropriate tuning since they do not have a microphone facility.

The Gibson app also features a standard metronome that allows users to choose a specific BPM or tap the screen three times to automatically set the tempo. Other key features of the app include over 30 chord charts with finger markings to help the user with mastering the chord. For those who prefer to learn new guitar riffs, licks or chord sequences via video tuition can now have that option from their Gibson App. The app will be updated frequently with new video content so users of all guitar ability can improve their technique from the comfort of their home.

For those who want to keep up with everything Gibson Guitar related including the announcement of new products, artist activity, news stories, interesting and factual features, exclusive contests and special events to name a few can now do this via the Gibson.com option. By popular demand the Gibson Guitar App is a multi-purpose and fully interactive guitar application which can be used at home, on the road or in the Studio. It’s a must have for guitarists and music enthusiasts of all ability and style, and best of all its free. Get yours today.

Allan Holdsworth: a softworks moment

Japanese Edition - Special Order
Allan Holdsworth (electric guitar, guitar synthesizer); Elton Dean (saxophone, alto saxophone, Fender Rhodes piano); Hugh Hopper (electric bass); John Marshall (drums).

On this 2003 effort, ex-members of the fabled British band Soft Machine reunite as Soft Works for a set consisting of loosely visualized pieces. And while Soft Works' roots harken back to the late-'60s to early-'70s prog rock-based Canterbury Scene, the band spanned genres including jazz fusion and free jazz during its tenure. Bassist Hugh Hopper, saxophonist Elton Dean, and drummer John Marshall are noted for their longstanding tenure with this time-honored outfit. In addition, guitar hero Allan Holdsworth periodically performed and recorded with the group during the mid-'70s and early '80s. Therefore, this eagerly anticipated outing should warm the hearts of those who've followed the Soft Machine/Soft Works' legacy amid various offshoots during the last several decades.

On Abracadabra, the quartet reworks a few Elton Dean pieces, culled from his Moorsong CD, while also including guitarist Phil Miller's piece titled "K-Licks," among others. The musicians indulge in electrified and irrefutably spacious jazz grooves in concert with some ethereal treatments provided by Holdsworth's "synthaxe"-based guitar maneuvers. Yet Holdsworth's effectively designed chop chords and accentuating progressions help anchor the proceedings. Dean flexes quite a bit of muscle here, due to his hard-edged and somewhat gritty alto and saxello lines. Where many of these works feature gradually climactic cadenzas supported by Hopper and Marshall's limberly executed rhythmic maneuvers, Holdsworth conveys his infamous, doomsday chops, but the music quiets down on occasion, whereas the instrumentalists occasionally delve into the free zone. Otherwise, they turn in a spunky straight-four vibe on Dean's "Willie's Knee." As a result, many of the album's highlights are contained within the soloists' synergistic exchanges and in their ability to run on all cylinders when the situation arises.

Chris Broderick: BAM interview

Chris Broderick interviewed by Bay Area Metal
You list Marty Friedman on your website as someone that has influenced your playing, which is cool because you’ve done a great job of capturing Marty’s solos as they were originally played. What is it about his style in particular that influenced you?

Well, I would say that what it really came from was from listening to Jason Becker and then his playing in Dragon’s Fist is really great. When you listen to Marty, he has such a unique sound. The generalized term for it is that “mid-eastern” or “eastern” sound, and as soon as you hear one of his solos you say, “Oh, that’s Marty!” That’s one of the best things that any player or soloist can have is their own sound and their own style, and that’s one thing that really influenced me.

Rafal Konikowski: nol rocks

Rafal Konikowski says:
My name is Rafal Konikowski and I'm a guitarist, composer and an author of guitar workshops from Poland. Since 1998 I've been running a series of workshops and tests in a music magazine Guitar and Bass (Gitara I Bas). In 2000 Professional Music Press published my guitar workshop Electric Guitar for Two (Gitara Razy Dwa). Since 2002 my on-line guitar workshop May-school is available on www.mayones.com (with audio examples and soundtracks to practice) which is the website of the biggest Polish custom build guitars manufacturer. Since 2001 I've taken part in a series of concerts Guitar Top along with the most famous Polish guitarists. In 2003 I've played there with my heavy-metal band NOL (www.nol-metal.com) and in 2004 we've recorded an album. The same year the magazine Guitar-Bass-Drums organized a contest Guitar Top and I got the fifth place in Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Guitarist category. At the turn of July and August 2005 I organized a heavy-metal guitar workshop MetalWorkshop and started cooperation with a new music magazine entitled Top Guitar. MetalWorkshop was so popular that we organized the second edition in 2006. The same year a new website www.metalwarsztat.com was created to promote the ideas of MetalWorkshop and enable participants to keep in touch with the organizers. A series of MetalWarsztat workshops were published in Top Guitar magazine in 2006. Since October 2007 I'm an official Laney Amps endorser http://www.laney.co.uk/. In the meantime NOL had recorded an album entitled 9 which was released at the beginning of 2007. We're touring Poland regularly, playing our music as the main lineup or supporting well-known Polish Metal bands such as Hunter, Kat or TSA. Currently we're producing material for our 3rd album.

Soloing over 5/8

John McLaughlin: 4th Dimension: To the One CD

With his new album To The One (Abstract Logix/Mediastarz), iconic guitarist and composer and 2010 Grammy Winner John McLaughlin looks backwards and forwards simultaneously. The six original songs are hauntingly evocative – with roiling rhythmic swells, modal expanses, and telepathic group interaction echoing the profound influence of John Cotrane’s 1965 spiritual jazz masterpiece A Love Supreme.

Mostly written in July and August of 2009, the music composing To The One was set down in the studio in November and December, with very few overdubs, by McLaughlin’s current performing outfit, the Fourth Dimension: Gary Husband (keyboards, drums), Etienne M’Bappe (electric bass), and Mark Mondesir (drums). Compositional devices clearly inspired by Coltrane are fused with elements of McLaughlin’s own multi-faceted approach, all delivered with a group empathy and shared vision that harkens back to Coltrane’s fearless mid-‘60s quartet of Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, and Jimmy Garrison. The effect of Jones’ kaleidoscopic approach to rhythm and drumming is especially felt, brilliantly recast and explored via McLaughlin’s gift for complex metrical structures.

McLaughlin’s restless, enquiring spirit is captured with disarming immediacy on To The One, vividly enhanced by both the skill and soulfulness of the Fourth Dimension. From the surging opener “Discovery” to the gently propulsive title track which closes the compact, forty-minute program, McLaughlin’s own playing is at its very peak: emotional and probing, exploding into flourishes of rapid-fire sixteenth notes one moment, candid and unguardedly vulnerable the next. No slavish imitation or sentimental tribute, To The One is a fiery yet open-hearted work, taking on the artistic and spiritual challenges first offered by Coltrane’s jazz masterpiece while making extensive use of the pioneering musical and technical vocabulary that McLaughlin has honed since the beginning of his storied career.
