Greg Koch: Gibson Gary Moore Les Paul Standard

Gibson Gary Moore Les Paul Standard • SN: 112331303
From his scorching playing with Skid Row and Thin Lizzy to his incendiary solo work, Gary Moore produced some of the most powerful guitar performances known to stage and studio from the mid '70s right up until his untimely death in 2011. Throughout his career, Moore virtually defined high-octane blues-rock, coining a signature tone that thousands have sought to emulate. Across three decades of playing, his weapon of choice remained the mighty Les Paul, one of which was the legendary '59 Burst originally owned by Fleetwood Mac guitarist Peter Green.

Tom Hess: How To Play Creative Sweep Picking Arpeggios

Tom Hess
How To Play Creative Sweep Picking Arpeggios
by Tom Hess
Want to play amazing sweep picking arpeggios that demand the attention of everyone who hears you play? It’s actually much easier to do than you think. The key is focusing on building incredible amounts of musical tension by combining sweep picking technique with creative guitar phrasing ideas. In this article, I will show you how to do this and transform your lead guitar playing.

To use sweep picking as a tool that will ‘enhance’ the expression, you MUST avoid the following: only thinking about speed while playing sweep picking arpeggios. Why should you avoid this? When you only (and always) try to play an arpeggio lick as fast as you can, you sacrifice the musical quality of the lick for speed. The result of this is a continual stream of the same notes being played over and over – making your sweep picking licks sound like boring ‘exercises’ instead of awesome phrases. To play inspiring sweep picking arpeggios that demand the attention of others, you must play with speed and precision while ALSO building up an overwhelming feeling of tension.

With this in mind, I am now going to show you an exercise that will help you change any arpeggio into a powerful tool for expressing intensity in your guitar licks. That said, you don’t have to be a master lead guitar player in order to use the idea I will be teaching you. Check out this sweep picking technique video so you can quickly apply the ideas in the following exercise into your guitar playing:

1. In this first step, pick out an arpeggio pattern that is easy for you to play at high speeds (while retaining as much accuracy as possible). Warm up by playing through this pattern several times.

2. Think of the names for each note that make up the arpeggio you picked from step one. For instance, if the arpeggio you picked was an Bb minor arpeggio, the notes would be Bb Db and F.

3. After watching the demonstration in the video, you found out that you can build powerful intensity by inserting silence before the next note in an arpeggio. While watching the video to see how this is done, play the arpeggio you picked from step one several times. Then after you have repeated the pattern enough times, immediately mute all the strings after you play the highest pitch of the arpeggio.

4. In this step, you will simply be ‘waiting’ a few moments in order to insert silence into your lick and begin building musical tension. As you are doing this, find one of the notes from the arpeggio you picked that is higher in pitch than the note you ended on in the previous step. Ex: If you picked a Bb minor arpeggio and you ended your phrase on ‘F’, find one of the other notes of the arpeggio (Bb, Db or F) that are higher in pitch on the fretboard. Do not play this note yet.

5. Next, play the note you selected from the previous step in order to release all the tension you built up. Finally, add incredible power to the entire phrase by using wide vibrato to accent this note. After doing this, you have successfully made a single variation of the sweep picking arpeggio pattern you began this exercise with.

6. Once you have completed steps one through five, you have created a new sweep picking lick (that is different from the original lick you started out with). Experiment with various new approaches by using the other phrasing ornamentation's I demonstrated in the video above.

Then after you have come up with several new variations, choose a new arpeggio pattern and repeat the steps of this exercise. This will quickly help you become much more effective at playing creative, attention-grabbing sweep picking arpeggios. Combine the ideas of this article with the unique concept in this lead guitar video.

Eric Gales: talks about Ghost Notes album and Shawn Lane tribute to

#Eric Gales says influences of the late Shawn Lane are in the grooves of his new album. W

Eric Gales can hear shades of the late Shawn Lane, a fellow Memphian and internationally acclaimed guitarist, in the songs on Gales’ new album, Ghost Notes.

“It’s an instrumental album, which I’ve never done before, and that’s what he did — instrumental stuff,” says Gales.

“When you hear them you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. It kind of goes into that weird Shawn Lane mode. Maybe that’s why I called it Ghost Notes.” It comes out Tuesday on Shrapnel Records.

Then on Thursday, the 10th anniversary of Lane’s death, Gales will help kick off a four-day tribute to Lane at Newby’s. He will headline the first night of the memorial. The New York progressive rock trio Consider the Source tops the bill Friday, and acclaimed fusion guitarist Fareed Haque (Sting; Medeski Martin & Wood) will headline Saturday with his band Mathgames.

All three nights will be filled out with a number of guest performers, including Paul Taylor, Tommy Burroughs, Hal Butler, Jon Paget and Andy Tanas. On Sunday night, the memorial concludes with a free open jam and videos of Lane performances.

Geddy Lee: Rush... it's not over... until it's over?

Geddy Lee:
... our manager is talking all the time about the future and we're choosing to ignore him. There has been talk of some sort of anniversary tour that might be the next thing we do, but we definitely have not decided if or when that's going to happen. ... The plan now is to have no plans. We have had a great 10 years of tour, album, tour album. I can honestly say that the three of us enjoyed this tour more than any one we've ever done. We left on a high note, but we recognize that we need to pay attention to our families and recharge our batteries. So we decided that we're just not going to discuss anything for a little while. ...

David Maxim Micic: Bilo 3.0 - to feature the return of Aleksandra Djelmash and Aleksandra Radosavljevic

Recording some cool instruments for Bilo 3.0!!

The instrument that I'm playing on this picture is called Kalimba and there's a really lovely story behind it.
Few days before I went to Poland I was looking all over the web for some Kalimba samples/VSTs and I found some cool stuff which I used for the track I was working on at the time. When I came back from Poland Aleksandra Djelmash came for a visit and she brought me some gifts from vacation. One of the gifts was Kalimba!! Amazing thing was that she had no idea that I was looking for that instrument few weeks back. Now, creepy fact was that it was tuned to Ab Lydian, the tonality that I needed for the song I was working on.

Stay fabulous!
Love — with Aleksandra Djelmash.

Carlsbad, CA, September 23, 2013 - Legendary musician, groundbreaking record producer and electronic music revolutionary Todd Rundgren will be honored with the prestigious Les Paul Award at the 29th Annual Technical Excellence & Creativity Awards. The awards recognize outstanding achievement in professional audio technology and production and will be presented Friday, Jan. 24 at the Anaheim Hilton during the 2014 NAMM Show held in Anaheim, CA.

The Les Paul Award, named for the revolutionary inventor and esteemed musician, is presented annually to honor individuals or institutions that have set the highest standards of excellence in the creative application of audio and music technology. Russ Paul, son of Les Paul, will make the presentation on behalf of the Les Paul Foundation, sponsor of the award. Instituted in 1991, the honor has been granted to such luminaries as Pete Townshend, Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson, Stevie Wonder, Neil Young and Peter Gabriel.

A personification of creative musical experimentation and mastery, Rundgren often performed multiple tasks on his solo albums - writing, playing, singing, engineering, producing and distributing - and has been a pioneer of interactive and online distribution. Between his solo work and his creative output with his progressive band, Utopia, Rundgren has released more than 25 critically acclaimed albums.

The TEC Foundation for Excellence in Audio will also induct two new members to its Hall of Fame. Audio engineer and sound researcher John Meyer co-founded and is CEO of Berkeley’s Meyer Sound Laboratories, Inc. He will be recognized for bringing groundbreaking developments to the design and manufacture of the loudspeaker and for his cutting-edge contributions to sound reinforcement in the performing arts. Legendary session musician Hal Blaine of the Wrecking Crew played drums on more than 5,000 records, TV jingles and film scores. Career highlights include hits for Elvis Presley, the Beach Boys and dozens more.

The TEC Awards ceremony is expected to attract more than 1,000 global manufacturers of audio equipment and software, as well as top music producers, engineers, sound mixers and musical artists. The awards ceremony is now produced as part of the NAMM Foundation. It will be held on the second night of The NAMM Show, one of the world’s largest global music industry trade shows. As it approaches its third decade, the TEC Awards under the auspices of NAMM continues to grow both technically and artistically and has become established as one of the entertainment industry's most important annual events.
