Dave Kilminster: Roger Waters Guitar Legend Releases Long Awaited New Solo Album

London, UK - Guitar virtuoso David Kilminster, best known for his work with Roger Waters and Keith Emerson, is preparing to release an exciting new rock album titled '...and THE TRUTH will set you free...'! This incredible project sees Dave reunited with drummer Pete Riley and bassist Phil Williams who toured with Dave as part of the Keith Emerson Band, and also recorded with Dave on his first solo rock album 'Scarlet - The Director's Cut'.

Says Dave about his new CD, “I returned from THE WALL tour, both exhausted and exhilarated, and ready to direct all of that inspiration, passion and creativity into a new project.  A year later, I held the master for this album in my hand… knowing it's undoubtedly the best solo work I've ever done...”

For the last eight years Dave was the featured lead guitarist with ROGER WATERS, joining Roger on his last two record breaking world tours; 'THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON LIVE', and (the highest grossing tour by a solo act EVER) 'THE WALL LIVE'!

Critics agree that David Kilminster is one of the most extraordinary talents to emerge from the UK. He is a sought after collaborator, band member and solo performer. After touring and collaborating a number of years with ELP legend Keith Emerson, fans will also know Dave from his work along side luminaries John Wetton, Carl Palmer, Geoff Downes, Guthrie Govan and John Young, among others.

Dave has released a series of instructional DVDs for Lick Library after the success of his global satellite series 'Killer Guitar'. Dave also won the inaugural 'Guitarist of the Year' competition, run by Guitarist magazine.

'Every Guitar Hero Needs a Ballad'.

That is what our co-founder Jan Cyrka said when we decided to create our first ever JTC original full length album. Vai, Satriani, you name them...they have one!

So we spoke to a number of the artists on our glittering roster and asked them to compose their ultimate ballad. The result is a powerful album that is full of pure emotion and drive and takes you on a journey through the minds of 11 incredibly talented guitar players and composers.

Starting with Andy James' 'The Wind That Shakes The Heart' (which was written by Jan Cyrka and James Graydon) the emotion sucks you in from the first note, just as you would expect from a brilliant ballad track. The scene is then set and from there, all 11 JTC artists continue the same trend with their own individual take on the ultimate ballad.

Any album that has brand new original tracks from the likes of Guthrie Govan, Alex Hutchings, Marco Sfogli, Jack Thammarat and more should be in any guitar players collection, there is no questioning that. However, we have gone the extra mile and provided you with 3 options!

1 - Just the album

2 - Just the backings, complete with full transcriptions and 5 bonus videos (Andy James, Jack Thammarat, Marco Sfogli, Feodor Dosumov and Al Joseph)

Eric Gales: the new album Good For Sumthin set for release in October 2014

Acclaimed musician Eric Gales' newest CD release, GOOD FOR SUMTHIN', is an autobiographical journey from his Memphis upbringing to his current status as one of the most influential guitarists on the blues rock scene. The new CD, his 14th release, is scheduled to arrive on October 28 from independent Cleopatra Records.

GOOD FOR SUMTHIN' features the searing guitar work that has often brought Gales comparisons to Jimi Hendrix, but actually combines his own early influences -- musicians who themselves were Hendrix devotees such as Robin Trower, Frank Marino, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Johnson. Says Gales, "Each of them has a different style, so I'm inspired by a lot of different music. All play a big part for me being who I am."

Eric Gales CD coverAs Gales says, "Growing up and developing my music, I wanted to be able to emulate Eric Johnson... so to wind up touring with this him and having him on my record is like a dream come true!" The feeling is apparently mutual as Johnson, who appears on the album's closing song, "E2 (Note For Note)," reported: "Eric has created a new record filled with incendiary guitar licks that are inspired and inspiring to listen to. He has also added to this a bundle of cool vocal harmonies and excellent lead vocals. I'm happy to be a part of it, and may it shoot high towards the bright stars above."

This 1991 Guitar World Best New Talent Winner has never been one to rest on his laurels, and the past year has seen him on the road touring with the Experience Hendrix Tour-joining a line-up that includes a true who's who of guitar masters. Headliners include Eric Johnson and Black Label Society's Zakk Wylde, both of whom make guest appearances on GOOD FOR SUMTHIN'.

Produced by Grammy™ winning producer and recording artist Raphael Saddiq and using lush harmonies and intricate guitar work, the songs on GOOD FOR SUMTHIN' tell Gales' life story in a potent mix of musical genres... alternately bluesy, psychedelic, funky and rock. "Raphael is one of my best friends, and when I asked him if he minded producing, he said, 'I want to do're one of the baddest cats I know!' So just having the opportunity to work with him was amazing. And to do it with one of my best friends-who just happens to be one of the baddest producers, musicians, arrangers and composers in the business- just gives me goosebumps!"

The blues-rock track "Going Back to Memphis" is a collaborative effort, with rock industry pioneer Mike Varney contributing the lyrics. The song features strong vocal harmonies and intense soloing, and summarizes Gales' career journey, which will culminate at a CD release party to celebrate the new album in his hometown of Memphis. Making the event at Minglewood Hall even more special is its occurrence on the eve of his 40th birthday. "I don't know how I feel about turning 40," he says, "but with this CD release, it ain't so bad!"

Gales' well-crafted CD features smartly written songs with a message and his exuberant musicianship, which range from the toneful solos on "You Give Me Life" that double his smooth vocals to the intense guitar interplay with guest Zakk Wylde on "Steep Climb." "Show Me How" combines a contemporary modern sound with influences of the 60's and 70's, while the collaborations continue on "Six Deep" as Gales' wife LaDonna joins the band on back-up vocals.

In Gales' own words, this record was a
 Eric Gales live4
long time coming.  And as he sings on the CD's title track, "We all need music to bring about some change. All you gotta' do is listen, and I think you'll feel the same."

Look for Gales on the upcoming Lauryn Hill release, as the Grammy winning singer has requested him to play on several tracks of her new CD. A big fan of Hill's, Gales could not be more thrilled about the collaboration.

Eric Gales' excitement about his craft is contagious.  "I am so proud of this new album," he says.  "I really put everything that I have into this one.  I wanted it to have an impact and be powerful, and the end result is just that!"

About Eric Gales

Memphis-born Eric Gales burst on the musical scene at the age of 15. His weapon of choice was a right-handed guitar turned upside down and played left-handed, drawing inevitable comparisons to Jimi Hendrix. While still in his teens, Gales was named Guitar World's "Best New Talent," signed a major label record deal and played for a national TV audience on The Arsenio Hall Show. All pretty heady stuff for someone so young.

1991 saw Gales release his first CD-THE ERIC GALES BAND-featuring his two brothers, Eugene and Manuel (the late Little Jimmy King). While originally delegating lead vocals to brother Eugene, Gales' second CD saw him stepping forward into mode of full frontman with both power guitar work and a newfound vocal confidence.

He's never looked back.

He has since honed his craft through constant touring and collaboration with the rock guitar greats, which led to him performing as special guest at Woodstock '94 with Carlos Santana, an evening that Gales will never forget. To play with his musical Godfather at such a legendary event was an important moment for Gales, and it also signaled that this young musician "had arrived."

Decades of touring and recording have allowed Gales to hone his craft, becoming one of the most powerful and captivating guitarists today across multiple musical genres. The past year alone has seen Gales immersed in a progressive rock supergroup, recording with bass player dUg Pinnick (from Kings X) and drummer Thomas Pridgen (from Mars Volta). Their band is fittingly called "Pinnick, Gales, Pridgen" and in just over a year they're released two CDs. He has also toured with the Experience Hendrix Tour, joining a line-up that includes a true who's who of guitar masters-Buddy Guy, Johnny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, among others. Look next for Gales to guest on Lauryn Hill's upcoming release later this year, too.

As Eric Gales sings on GOOD FOR SUMTHIN's lead track "Come A Long Way": "I just want to play my music for everyone...forget about my worries and be the one... I've come a long way!"

And indeed he has.

About the DVD....

For the first time ever, Blues Rock Guitarist Steve Hunter, renowned for his work with Peter Gabriel, Lou Reed and Alice Cooper, is captured on film playing a career-spanning anthology in an intimate setting with some of the worlds finest players.

The DVD, 'Tone Poems Live', was filmed on August 24th 2013 at a recording studio in LA. Alongside Steve was Tony Levin on Bass (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson) Phil Aaberg on Keyboards (Elvin Bishop, Peter Gabriel) Alvino Bennett on Drums (Dave Mason, Robin Trower).

They rehearsed for two days and filmed on the third day as though it were in front of an audience. Fourteen tunes, each played twice, with no overdubs added later. The material was chosen from most of Steve’s solo albums plus a few covers, including ‘Solsbury Hill’ ‘What’s Going On’ and Stevie Ray Vaughan’s ‘Riviera Paradise’.

This is the first time Steve Hunter has ever been filmed doing all his own material plus material of his own choice. Steve is now legally blind and all though not out of the question, touring has become more of a challenge. The recording session was produced and recorded by Brian Brinkerhoff and Paul Lani.

Alberto Rigoni: Overloaded the new album features Simone Mularoni, Marco Sfogli, and Fabrizio Leo

Alberto Rigoni - Overloaded (October 1st 2014)

After the release of "Three Wise Monkeys” album which featured contributions from legendary musicians such as Kevin Moore (ex-Dream Theater), Göran Edman (ex-Yngwie Malmsteen), Italian bassist and prog rock composer Alberto Rigoni releases today his fourth album entitled “Overloaded” (October 1st 2014).

More heavy and progressive than its predecessors, the new album, fully instrumental, is inspired by Alberto's vision of our contemporary society. "I think that everything is going too fast today and one of the reasons is technology: hyper fast communications (mostly through social networks), multitasking activities, tons of information as well as misinformation, products, services... In a couple of words - we are OVERLOADED! The Internet has changed our lives, and even though it is indeed a great tool we have to be careful and use it judiciously. Excessive use may cause several diseases such as stress, depression, and social isolation." explains Alberto.

At the following link you can watch the video teaser directed by Gustavo Arteaga:

Spanning genres from progressive metal to rock to ambient and atmospheric, Overloaded also features top class Italian musicians: drummer Denis Novello, keyboard player Federico Solazzo, guitarists Simone Mularoni (DGM, Empyrios), Marco Sfogli (James LaBrie), and Fabrizio "Bicio" Leo.

The album is dedicated to the great bassist Randy Coven (Steve Vai, Ark) who sadly passed away on May 20th 2014. "R.I.P. Randy, you will always inspire my music!" - Alberto Rigoni

Jon Durant,Colin Edwin: Burnt Belief - Etymology coming on Alchemy Records.

BURNT BELIEF, POPMATTERS.COM PREMIERE NEW TRACK "PRECIS" Instrumental collaboration between U.K. bassist Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree) and U.S. guitarist Jon Durant "Etymology" out October 21 on Alchemy Records.

COHASSET, MA - World-renowned bassist Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree, Metallic Taste of Blood, Ex-Wise Heads) and guitarist/composer Jon Durant have once again teamed up under the moniker Burnt Belief for the release of a new album of progressive ethno-ambient fusion instrumentals, titled Etymology. Today, the duo has teamed up withPopMatters to stream the first offering, "Précis," from the upcoming collaboration at:

"'Précis' seemed like an appropriate title, as it condenses the ingredients that make Burnt Belief what it is: deep atmospheres, unexpected twists, dynamic changes and the evidence of Jon and myself reacting to each other," Colin Edwin toldPopMatters.

Etymology, due out on October 21 via Alchemy Records, can be pre-ordered now through Burning Shed at: and at: in addition to at: The first 200 pre-orders through Burning Shed and exclusively will receive a download code to receive five Etymologybonus tracks, including unreleased music from the two musicians' individual libraries and collaborative works.

The compositions which unfold across Etymology's 70 minutes showcase the duo's fruitful symbiosis and clear developmental path across their shared musical landscape. Assimilating diverse elements ranging from polyrhythms, deep ECM styled atmospherics and even angular nu-jazz abstraction, the result is an immersive, multi-layered and engrossing documentation of a remarkably sympathetic musical connection.

Etymology is further enhanced by sensitive, deep electric violin performances from highly regarded classical musician Steve Bingham, also known for his evocative work with U.K. art-rock band No-Man.

The album's title is a metaphor for the pair's working methodology, in which compositions evolve from an initial germ of an idea into a fully realized piece. The resulting work is often very different from its original concept yet still maintains the initial elements at its core.

"We feel like we've progressed within our shared approach, including some new harmonic, rhythmic and melodic elements," commented Jon Durant.

"Much of our compositional approach remains consistent from the first Burnt Belief record," he added. "For instance, a number of the pieces began as ambient cloud guitar atmospheres, which Colin would then explore and find rhythmic grooves to play over or with the clouds. Then, I would maybe re-arrange, construct melodic ideas, and send back to Colin for further input from him. In this way, the pieces evolve, sometimes very far from their original state."

Edwin and Durant first teamed up for Durant's 2011 album Dance of the Shadow Planets, a wholly live in the studio documentation of their nascent musical chemistry centered around Durant's atmospheric compositions and featuring also the talents of violinist Caryn Lin and multi-percussionist Jerry Leake.

The follow-up to Dance of the Shadow Planets, 2012's eponymously titled Burnt Belief, was distance recorded, but a fully collaborative compositional affair with Edwin taking equal responsibility for the writing process. Having confidently cemented their working methods and musical connection with the well-received Burnt Belief, the duo undertook some live dates in the U.K. and Ukraine with Kiev-based female vocal duo Astarta (as Astarta/Edwin), a project Colin has been working on for some time, but presently on ice due to the current instability in the country.

Energized by working together in a live environment again in late 2013, Edwin and Durant reconvened to create the present album, Etymology. Whilst still retaining the strong sonic identity laid down on Burnt Belief, Etymology represents a considerable expansion and natural evolution of their sound, not least because of the additional input of three marvelous drummers (Vinny Sabatino, Dean McCormick and Jose Duque) to complement and reinforce the programmed electronic rhythms.

"Colin and I both felt that after two records utilizing hand drums exclusively, it was time to change it up and go with a live drum kit to augment Colin's rhythm programming. It ended up giving the pieces a much harder edge to them, and this in turn allowed me to push my guitars a little more over the top."

Tom Hess: How To Make It Easy To Play Guitar Fast

How To Make It Easy To Play Guitar Fast

by Tom Hess
Have you thought about what is the specific thing that all of your favorite guitar players share in common when playing fast? The answer is that all of them play in a way that looks amazingly easy. Actually, speed guitar technique not only seems easy – it truly IS easy, and to be exact, it only gets easier once you run through the whole process of developing this skill correctly.

Unfortunately, just about all guitar players fight to make their fast playing feel easy, and attempting to speed up their playing feels too hard. I can show you a lot of reasons why this happens, but the most classic one comes from following the general mindset of practicing at a low metronome tempo and gradually increasing it by a few beats per minute at a time. Despite the fact that this approach DOES have a few of advantages, it also has many serious restrictions (when applied at the wrong time or mistakenly? as happens quite often).

The following factors are why the typical guitar speed developing strategy (practicing from slow to fast by increasing speed little by little) makes fast playing feel complicated:

  • You don’t practice for actual speed in your guitar playing (where you have to start playing without playing anything before). It’s much easier to play an exercise over and over, incrementally arriving at your peak speed and having the playing of that one exercise be great. However, when you must play the exact same exercise at your top speed IMMEDIATELY, with everything feeling effortless and sounding clean, the feeling is much different. Thus, traditional guitar speed building mindset doesn’t prepare you for playing in real life.
  • Conventional guitar speed building strategy aims at speeding up the whole exercise all at once. Generally this leads to mindless guitar practice (playing an exercise again and again, merely wishing to get faster) rather than centering your attention on identifying the specific problems that restrain your speed. I talk about this concept in depth in this article on the secret to playing whatever you desire on guitar.
  • It’s easy to become lazy and make entirely different movements at slow speeds in comparison to what you do when playing fast. Consequently, as soon as your speed improves past a particular point, your playing will become uncomfortable and hard, because now you will be using movements that you did not use in the past. I’ve already discussed this to a great extent in this article about how to practice to build insane guitar speed.
  • Releasing the excessive tension that usually builds up through faster playing is something that the traditional approach doesn’t allow you to practice. Therefore, as your speed grows, your guitar playing begins to become more and more like a challenge and you get fatigued fast.
Note: the traditional approach of beginning to practice slowly and progressively increasing speed IS effective when you are learning something new (and it’s usually very helpful for guitar players at an intermediate – beginner levels). Nevertheless the more advanced you become as a guitarist (and the faster you want improve your speed in a certain practice exercise), the more you will need to get more specific practice procedures for overcoming your guitar speed plateaus.

Now that you are aware of the disadvantages of the average approach for building speed on guitar, I will teach you one of many strategies you can take to conquer guitar speed plateaus and make your playing feel easy. This is one of the tactics I implement with my guitar students to assist them in acquiring higher levels of guitar speed.

How To Practice Guitar Using Speed Bursts
To effectively use the tactic below, you must choose an exercise that you can CURRENTLY play effortlessly from start to finish without messing up (at a slow tempo at least). This guitar speed developing tactic works as follows:

Rather than playing a whole phrase at a very slow tempo and incrementally increasing speed, split up that phrase into very small bursts (between 4-8 notes each) and practice every one of these at your TOP speed.

Watch this video to get a clear understanding of how to practice this concept:

Here are the reasons why practicing guitar in fast bursts of speed will help you enhance your guitar speed quickly and easily:
  • You will teach your mind/ears to process notes at extreme speeds while noticing and correcting mistakes in your guitar playing. This is CRITICAL, because if you attempt to play guitar fast while lacking this skill, it will sound like a crazy mess.
  • You can quickly isolate very specific mistakes within a longer phrase and fix them one at a time, so you can play the whole phrase fast and clean.
  • You don't allow your fingers to apply lazy and slow movements - you are actually training them to do exactly what they should do when you are playing fast. This is key for achieving exceptional guitar technique.
  • Your guitar speed will in fact come to be useful in real life playing (where you can’t play something time after time and rather must jump in and play something at your peak speed instantly).
  • You have now found a valuable way of making fast guitar playing feel very easy. The next step is find out all the other tactics that will enable you to double your guitar speed while lowering your practice time by half (I will reveal you how to do this for free). Find out how by reading this page about maximizing your guitar speed.
