Guthrie Govan: Odd Time Licks: Vol.1 5/4

*BRAND NEW* Guthrie Govan's 20 Odd Time Licks Vol.1 - 5/4

Download Link:

For his debut 20 Licks series we gave Guthrie Govan all of the creative liberties he desired, and what we were left with is pretty outstanding! This package is all Guthrie; from the overall series concept, to the jamtrack, the ideas and licks inside the package. It's all hot off the press from one of the worlds most accomplished, and refined guitar players!

Playing over unusual time signatures can be daunting and people often have trouble relaxing. This series from the brilliant mind of Guthrie Govan aims to break up the rigidity that this entails, helping you overcome any fears of odd time signatures that you might have. Guthrie’s licks will help you develop a creative, controlled and intuitive approach, giving you a confident façade that will free up your mind from the arduous task of relentless counting, letting you focus on what really counts – the music.

Guthrie says ‘I think there’s a lot to be said for overcoming your fear of odd time signatures just by kind of feeling your way around the structure of the bar and developing a sense for how far away the next ‘beat 1’ is going to be. There are 20 demo licks here to give you an idea about how to navigate your way through a bar of 5/4 or a series of bars of 5/4, and hopefully land on your feet at the end of the lick. The intention is that, as you work through these licks you get some sort of structural idea of how long the bar is and you start to feel to your way around the rhythmic stepping stones and it gives you confidence so that when you are improvising your own stuff you feel a little less lost and a little less at sea. Really there’s no reason to be scared of odd time signatures.’

Theoretically, the core of Guthrie’s melodic work in this package is mainly Dorian, Minor Pentatonic and Blues scale based, interspersed with melodic decorations such as chromatic passing tones and the occasional ‘outside’ phrase thrown in for good measure. Guthrie made this choice consciously to help you focus on the rhythmic aspect of these licks, as you study and master his odd time phrasing techniques to incorporate and ingrain the 5/4 groove into your repertoire.

As ever, we have accurately transcribed every note and included the TAB/notation in the download to help you learn and analyse Guthrie licks alongside the video performances. We have also included the licks in audio format, a 'lick backing track' and extended backing track, as well as bonus lick notes to aid your studies as you delve deeper into the mind of the guitar great, and learn how to navigate odd time signatures like a pro!

It was great to be able to work with Pete Wells writing some of these songs too. So it was a no-brainer to accept their proposal for a solo album. I am a bit nervous and beyond excited!"

Joe Satriani: discusses Shockwave Supernova with

Joe Satriani: It's got 15 songs on it, which makes it long. [Laughs] Longer than most. I was very happy to get the green light from the guys at Legacy to be able to tell the full story of Shockwave Supernova to the fans. I explained to them, it was going to take 15 songs to do it. It's a concept album that the audience doesn't really need to know about - in terms of the concept.

It was a writing/composing/production device that allowed me to pull in lots of songs that I had been writing and used to support a story about a perceived alter-ego of mine, who calls himself "Shockwave Supernova." He is the overt electric rock guitar player on stage, and he goes through so many changes over the course of the album - reflecting on his life - which leads, eventually, to him realizing that he needs to turn into something better. So he's got to morph himself into a better version.

It all started with the end of the tour in Singapore, when I was walking out on stage, trying to remind myself not to play with my teeth anymore. And then, a few moments later, there I was, on my knees, playing with my teeth! I was like, "Who is this person who does this?"

It turned into a daydream that turned into a real idea for an album, which was that guy is "Shockwave Supernova," who I've been using to bring myself out of my normal shell, when I've got to go public. And it was really a lot to write about. So that's it in a very long, large nutshell, the story of the record.

He's one of the top groove drummes of all time and has worked with Elvis Preseley, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Traveling Wilburys, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young -- and the list goes on.

Is Jim Keltner a jazz drummer? A rock drummer? A country rock-cum-big-band drummer? It’s hard to know as Keltner is impossible to categorize — he’s seemingly played it all. Perhaps the most resourceful drummer alive, Keltner typically finds the most unusual, and the most musical solution to any drumming question. His rustic grooves rattle, buzz, vibrate, and hum, often produced from a variety of sticks and stick-like instruments. Keltner’s mid-’70s work with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Harry Nilsson, Joe Cocker, and Steely Dan produced milestones like the Dan’s “Josie” and Dylan’s “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” (during the recording of which Keltner cried). But his recent work is even more striking. The Traveling Wilburys, Los Lobos, and even Money Mark provided the perfect release for Keltner’s cool creativity, which includes never hitting the obvious beat when his innate, oversized talent could produce something infinitely better.

Urszula Stosio: Skydiving and Total Eclipse - great performance from a highly talented player!

Urszula Stosio belongs to a rare species among electric guitarists - though she plays in different bands, she also composes and performs songs for solo guitar, which is a very demanding field of art. She mixes complex compositions with improvisation while also making good conscious use of various guitar effects. And all this complexity doesn't stand in the way of powerful emotion, which filled the welcoming space of "Nie Lubię Poniedziałków" Tea Club on one warm Tuesday afternoon...

Frank Steffen Mueller: Fractal Audio Axe-Fx "Epic Crystal Patch"

Hey guys, I´ve tried to "re-program" the famous Eventide "Crystal sound“ with my Fractal Audio Axe-Fx II XL. All I can say is, that I´m pretty close and the Axe-Fx is an absolutely incredible piece of gear. In this vid, I just did some noodling with my "Epic Crystal patch“…and yes…I played really LOUD! I used a Custom made Auto Wah, called "The Wah Of Love“ in front of my Axe. This is a real vintage Germanium Auto-Wah made by SviSound. This pedal is just amazing. It´s a sort of vocalizer to me. The lead sound is smooth, warm, dynamic and very „vocalesque“ singing. I love it. This pedal is always on my pedalboard because it´s a „Must Have“. I used the fantastic GEC8Live of Moen Fx as my pedal&amp switcher. It´s a perfect piece of gear and I can switch all my pedals/pedalcombination/amp/midi so smooth. I played a Custom Shop Siggi Braun Fine Young Guitars 20th Anniversary „Little Crow“ guitar. This guitar is nothing less than "killer". It looks gorgeous an sounds awesome. I love it! In this video I´ve played a "Sunrise Big Mini 3mm" Gravity Pick. This pick is absolutely fantastic. Everything sounds better with it… I love Gravity Picks and I´m happy to be a Gravity artist! For all my guitars I use the best straps you can get for money - Richter Straps!
I´m a happy man. I have the opportunity to play the best gear in the world. I wanna say a big "Thank You“ to all the companies for their fantastic support.
Take care and see you around. Cheers, Frank

Kevin Eubanks, Stanley Jordan: Duets - album available

Kevin Eubanks & Stanley Jordan

Multifaceted guitar heroes Kevin Eubanks and Stanley Jordan recording a Duets album: an idea that as soon as you hear it, you wonder why nobody, including you, thought of it until now. Eubanks, the Philadelphia native who took New York by storm starting out in straight ahead jazz clubs then progressive albums for contemporary jazz giant GRP Records and legendary Blue Note Records, frequent collaborations with cutting-edge bassist Dave Holland, then 18 years in Jay Leno’s The Tonight Show Band (15 as Music Director) where he played with seemingly every meaningful musician across genres. Jordan, the Chicago-born/Bay Area-raised phenomenon who mesmerized audiences with his instantly identifiable “touch technique” on guitar beginning with his gold- selling Blue Note Records debut Magic Touch (featuring his radio staple remake of Michael Jackson’s “The Lady in My Life”), followed by a string of wide-ranging endeavors including a one-off for Clive Davis’ Arista Records and explorations into the field of music therapy. Add that, between them, both gentlemen play piano, bass and keyboards – and arrange and compose – and the possibilities become truly inviting. Surely Eubanks and Jordan would make some engaging “beyond boundaries” music together. That they do on their serenely seamless 10- song Mack Avenue Records outing, Duets – spontaneous compositions and passionate arrangements that will send listeners’ imaginations on a series of hypnotic journeys.

The impeccably balanced Duets includes four all new “skull arrangements” (so called because they were jointly created off the top of their heads), versions of four well-known classics: “Nature Boy,” “Blue In Green,” “Summertime” and “A Child Is Born;” plus interpretations of a modern pop song (Adele’s “Someone Like You”) and an electronic dance pop hit (Ellie Goulding’s “Lights”). These were the all-natural uncalculated result of long philosophical heart to hearts as well as a 9-city tour – over 30 years after Eubanks’ and Jordan’s first meeting in the early ‘80s at New York’s famed jazz-fusion club, the 55 Grand.
