Glenn Hughes: Joins Orange Amplification

Glenn Hughes
Orange Amplification are proud to announce the legendary bassist Glenn Hughes is now endorsing their amps. For over forty years Glenn has been a vocalist, bass player and songwriter in some of the greatest rock acts of all time as well as achieving success in his own solo career.

From his early days with Trapeze, the British rock bassist and vocalist went on to to join one of the biggest bands of the ‘70’s, Deep Purple where Glenn’s bass playing and vocals were the anchor for several classic albums including Burn, Stormbringer and Come Taste The Band. He is currently lead vocalist and bass player in the rock supergroup Black Country Communion and still finds time to record and tour in his own name as well as many other projects such as The Rock & Roll All Stars.

His move to Orange Amplification sees him returning back to his roots of using a British made vintage inspired amp with full modern tones. Commenting on Orange Amplification, Glenn said, “I plugged into that Orange amp and it was as though it had been designed for me! It was the Glenn Hughes sound... It was the sound I had with Trapeze in ’69 and the sound I had with Deep Purple!”

Glenn will be using the AD200B MK3 Head with an OBC810 8 x 10” Bass Speaker Cabinet on his latest tour. The AD200B MK3 is quite simply one of the purest bass amps ever produced with a creamy dynamic low end and a focused midrange crunch. The OBC810 is a revered Bass Cabinet first made in small numbers back in the 1970s, and recently re-launched, it has to be heard to be believed.

Fred Brum, Rob Chappers: Fred Brum - Laney VH100R - Nebula

Fred Brum
And here's the Laney Amplification VH100R in action, using one of my most abused axes, the blue Jaden Rose Guitars Spider 8-string. As usual, no post-processing mega-tricks here, and there's a SND Redemptionist thrown in for the arpeggiated bits, showcasing how the amp reacts to drive pedals.

Hope you guys enjoy!

My album Atonement is available (along with a free downloadable track at - please give it a listen. :)

As I've been wanting to get myself an Ironheart 60 head, I went over to Laney Portugal's warehouse to give it a try. Unfortunately, the amp was, contrary to expectations, sold out. Not so unfortunately, a lovely number of old acquaintances (used them countless times in the past) such as the GH50L and the VH100R were sitting in their boxes, begging to be properly initiated.

As I hadn't had some quality time with the VH100R for quite a good while, it seemed like a good time to give it a spin and demo it using my song Nebula. As usual, it's pretty much quite the raw mic'd sound with the addition of analog delay models when mixing for the whole spacey ambience thing I love so dearly.

The guitar is my trusty blue Jaden Rose Spider 8-string, and the signal chain is either guitar straight to amp or using my fantastic SND Redemptionist, showcasing how pedal friendly the clean channel actually is. Cab is a Laney 4x12" loaded with V30's and it was mic'd with an SM57, which was plugged straight into my Presonus 22 VSL.

Hope you guys enjoy the vid! :)

Again, many thanks to Chappers for his fab lead on this track!

Will Bernard: Outdoor Living reviewed by downbeat

Will Bernard's Outdoor Living Garners 3 out of 4 Stars in Downbeat

Guitarist Will Bernard doesn't hurt for references. The Berkeley native has recorded with Don Cherry and Stanton Moore. He's jammed with Charlie Hunter, Dr. John and John Medeski. And he's collaborated with Tom Waits, Spearhead and hip-hop ensemble the Coup. While a diverse palette informs his sixth record, so does experience-garnered restraint. Bernard's history with organist Wil Blades and drummer Simon Lott also accounts for the natural vibe absent from a majority of similar fusion-based affairs...

Charlie Hunter: interview and new CD details

Charlie Hunter

Renowned jazz guitarist, Charlie Hunter, gives an insightful interview about defining jazz, not "fitting-in" as an artist, going it alone in the music industry, and the ironic simplicity of playing a seven-string guitar. Having recorded for nearly two decades and previously signed to Blue Note in the 90's, Charlie continues to self-release ever intriguing material Read the full interview

Charlie Hunter & Scott Amendola

Not Getting Behind Is The New Getting Ahead (Charlie Hunter Music)

Renowned guitarist/composer Charlie Hunter's new duo recording with drummer Scott Amendola, is an album that's easy to get behind. A complete departure from his last two albums, Not Getting behind Is The New Getting Ahead is Hunter's first recording of original compositions in three years. Hunter explains that their intention was to tell stories around the central theme of the album’s title. Hunter says, “The new tunes are meant to evoke some of the things you might see in your travels through the USA these days. Scott and I wanted to think of each composition as a starting point for some kind of narrative."

“The album's ten tracks were recorded with both Hunter and Amendola playing in the same room simultaneously, with no headphones, and there's no mixing, editing, or overdubs. Not Getting Behind Is The New Getting Ahead was recorded straight to two-track analog 1/4-inch tape by lauded sound engineer Dave McNair.” – JamBase

Phil Collen: auctioning guitar for Cancer Therapy Charity

Guitar Played Exclusively Throughout Def Leppard

“Rock of Ages” Tour This Summer

(Los Angeles, CA) –PHIL COLLEN, lead guitarist for the iconic rock bandDEF LEPPARD, announces plans for a charitable auction of “Wings”, a custom Jackson PC1 guitar that Collen has played throughout this summer’s Rock of Ages tour. The auction, taking place exclusively on eBay, will begin on September 5th and end September 14th, the last date of the tour. The winner will be announced in November which is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month and all proceeds from the auction will benefit the Gerson Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the Gerson Therapy, an alternative treatment for cancer and other degenerative diseases.

In early 2012, Jake Willoughby, a guitar and music store owner, asked Collen if he would assist in helping to raise money towards the fight against cancer with Jake’s mother having just passed away from pancreatic cancer after a courageous 13-month fight. By tragic coincidence Phil’s own father, Kenneth succumbed to the same disease in 2004. Jake donated a Collen signature guitar, the Jackson PC1 from his music store. In the spirit of hope it was named “Wings”. Mike Learn, a noted artist whose graphics are well known in the guitar world, donated the graphic custom paint job on the guitar. Ironically, Mike lost two family members to the same disease.

Phil began researching companies that were not only looking to prevent cancer, but also reverse its devastating effects. He initially had heard about The Gerson Institute located in San Diego, CA from Jeni Cook, a raw foods chef and the wife of Sex Pistols and Manraze drummer, Paul Cook. As Phil watched “The Gerson Miracle” DVD he was incredibly moved by their cause wishing he would have known about them before his father passed. The Gerson Institute is a non-profit organization in San Diego, California dedicated to providing education and training in the Gerson Therapy - an alternative, non-toxic treatment for cancer and other chronic degenerative diseases. The Gerson Therapy, developed by Dr. Max Gerson in the 1920s, activates the body’s extraordinary ability to heal itself through an organic, vegetarian diet, raw juices, detoxification, and natural supplements. Since this powerful, natural treatment boosts the body’s own immune system, it is an effective method for treating not only cancer, but a variety of degenerative diseases including arthritis, heart disease, allergies, and skin tuberculosis.

Dr. Gerson began developing the Therapy while looking for a way to manage his own debilitating migraines, a path that lead him to a holistic understanding of medicine that is finally gaining growing acceptance.

This year marks a number of anniversaries for COLLEN, namely the 30thanniversary of his joining Def Leppard as lead guitarist making his debut on the 10x platinum (in the USA) album Pyromania. In addition, this year marks the 25th anniversary for the 13x platinum (USA) album Hysteria, as well as the 20th anniversary of its 5x platinum (USA) follow-up Adrenalize.

In addition to Los Lobos, David is also a member of Los Super Seven, the Latin Playboys, and Houndog, featuring Canned Heat’s Mike Halby.

It was this commonality of musical influences that helped him forge a bond with Luther Dickinson and David Hidalgo.

Still in his 30’s, grammy-nominated guitar master Luther Dickinson has had a very impressive career to date, having recorded more than a dozen records fronting the group, The North Mississippi Allstars, as well as three records with the Black Crowes and collaborations with Billy Lee Riley, Robert Randolph, John Hiatt and many others. Matt Blackett asks the questions of Vinnie Moore

“Definitely Maybe” - Jeff Beck

“This is one of the most emotional things ever recorded. The slide playing is so expressive that it sounds like the soul crying. The main solo is gut wrenching. I learned a lot from not just the notes, but also the fact that he is whispering some of them and shouting others. At 3:21, he plays a line under the main melody that is absolutely gorgeous. The vibrato in this whole track is brilliant. Jeff is probably the guitarist God listens to.”
