News: YouTube moving to another level

Dear Creator,

Soon you’ll see an improved YouTube, one you helped us build. The new site design will help you build a bigger, more connected audience by improving new channel discovery, simplifying subscriptions, and keeping your fans plugged in and aware of your new videos no matter where they are.
Over the past seven years, YouTube has grown incredibly fast, driven by you -- your creation, your uploading and your engagement with your fans. Together, we’re changing the face of entertainment, education, news, sports, and media.
Last year we launched the Guide on the YouTube homepage, to help transition YouTube from a video-to-video experience, to a place where you're programming the channels of the future. We’re always listening to your feedback on how we could make this experience even better. For example, we’ve heard a lot about how the subscription box could work, and what the home page could show for people who aren’t signed in. You’ve also suggested that we make it easier for people to find your channels, and for your fans to be alerted when you’ve released new videos.  We’ve used your input to improve how people find, watch, and stay connected to the channels they love.
Here’s how we’re changing the site to support your channels:
  • The Guide on the YouTube homepage is now more current and makes subscriptions more meaningful. It will eventually appear everywhere on the site, as well as on mobile and other devices, helping your subscribers see all your new uploads no matter where they are.
  • Your video takes center stage on the video viewing page. By moving all the video information and engagement below the video player, the cleaner experience will encourage extended viewing.
  • We are making it easier to subscribe with enhanced channel recommendations.
We know change isn’t easy, so we don’t take it lightly. Our experiments show that the new design drives subscriptions and keeps fans better connected to their favorite content.
There’s more to come in 2013, including improvements to channels, commenting, and more. As always, we depend on your input to guide our thinking and planning.
Let’s keep building the future of video together.

Tom Quayle: From Rock To Fusion by Tom Quayle

Looking for that special Christmas gift?

LickLibrary’s From Rock to Fusion, by Tom Quayle, is aimed at intermediate to advanced rock / blues / country guitar players wanting to make the move to fusion or a changes based style of playing. This guitar lesson DVD, bought to you by LickLibrary, will help you develop killer chops and improve your theory knowledge in and easy and exciting way.

From Rock To Fusion By Tom Quayle (RRP £19.99) is split in to three main sections. The first section shows you how to improve your legato and hybrid picking, then demonstrates how to use them in arpeggios and scales to get an ultra-modern sound. It then takes these new skills and shows you how to build lines with a more fusionistic sound. The next section examines phrasing using specific note groups and how jazz and fusion guitarists practice these ideas. The final part covers playing over chord progressions used by jazz and fusion guitarists and then moves onto more complex progressions and explains non-functional harmonies. All this, plus five backing tracks with different changes and static chord groups for you to play over and extensive tabs for all the phrases, licks and concepts discussed in the DVD.

Sharing his knowledge is Tom Quayle, Guitar Idol finalist 2008 at the London Guitar Show. He is an in demand teacher, session musician and a fusion player with a highly developed knowledge of harmony, blistering technique and gorgeous tone. A regular contributor to iGuitar magazine, this is Tom’s first instructional DVD for LickLibrary.

News: The Guitar Institute, Yamaha and Total Guitar Magazine unveils 2013 Guitar Scholarships worth over £8,000

The Guitar Institute, part of London’s Institute of Contemporary Music Performance, Yamaha and Total Guitar Magazine are proud to announce the launch of the 2013 guitar scholarships programme. These sought after scholarships are for study on the Guitar Institute’s renowned one-year Higher Diploma guitar course. There will be one fully-funded place for the winner (worth £5650) with a partially funded place for the runner-up (worth over £2,800).

The Higher Diploma is a specialist one-year full-time course, developed by the Institute to train and develop students of guitar, bass, drums and vocals for a career in the music industry. It was the first full-time course of its kind ever developed in the UK and achieving a place on the course continues to be an aspirational goal for young musicians. The Institute, widely recognised as one of Europe’s leading schools of modern music, counts on an unrivalled teaching and visiting faculty, many of whom regularly work and tour with some of the music industry’s greatest artists. This faculty includes such names as Steve Smyth, Martin Goulding and Dario Cortese.

Previous Institute students can be found throughout today's music industry, working with high profile artists such as Radiohead, The Vaccines, Jessie J, Kylie Minogue, Reef, The Script and Paolo Nutini.
Closing date for entries is 22nd February 2013 and there is always a great demand. The scholarships are open to anyone from the UK or internationally and the application form is available to download from www.icmp.co.uk/scholarships

This is a fantastic opportunity to win a free place on one of the most prestigious guitar courses in Europe and the winner of the scholarship will also have the support of Yamaha and the opportunity to write a column with Total Guitar Magazine (www.totalguitar.com).

Jamie Holroyd: 30 Days to Better Jazz Guitar Comping

Developing a strong comping and chord vocabulary is just as important as learning licks and scales. But with there been so many chords and comping techniques, knowing how to study them effectively can be tough.

With many books simply just being a thesaurus of chords with little to no application or explanation, it leaves most guitarists confused, resulting in them forgetting half of the chords learnt on the first page by the time they get half way through the book.

Because of this, I decided to put together a 30 day project in the summer of 2012, where each day for 1 month I posted a range of lessons covering many different comping and chord techniques.

Hi, Andrei here! This is a playthrough of the song rEborn by my band, Duality.

Sorry for the occasional mistakes (this was a full take with improvised solos and the audio sync'ed from Pro Tools), for the stupid faces I make when I'm really focused and for the bad video editing and sync. Video isn't my strong point, plus iMovie is one of the worst software I've ever used.

Michael Angelo Batio: Intermezzo - finished rhythm guitars

Michael Angelo Batio:  Hello everyone. Again, I would like to thank you for the tremendous response my "Intermezzo" album project has received here at Kickstarter. We did this together and I can't thank you enough! I finished the Rhythm Guitars yesterday and now we will be starting the Bass Guitar tracks. Over the years I have used numerous different Bass Players on my records, but I also play Bass. And IMHO, I am a great Bass Player. Humbly stated! :-) I don't try to play Bass Guitar like I play Lead Guitar. When I used to do a lot of session and studio work, I played Bass on many of the songs as well as guitar. The reason I am saying all of this is that for this record - because of the complexities of the music and the way I want the Bass approached, I am playing the Bass myself. I also played Bass Guitar on my first 3 solo albums which are - "No Boundaries," "Planet Gemini" and "Tradition." I will be using a 5 string Dean Bass guitar with active pick ups. It has already been restrung and intonated to perfection! I am starting tomorrow morning on the first song. I am really happy with the way the 7 string rhythms have sounded as well as the key board parts that I also recorded. The Bass to me, is the glue that holds a record together. The Drums are the foundation. The Guitars, Key boards and everything else add color and style to the record. I can't wait to start recording the Bass Guitar tracks! This is going to be fun!!!!!!!!! I'll post another update very soon!

News: NAMM 2013 Show Opens with Grand Plaza Inauguration Festivities

013 NAMM Show Opens with Grand Plaza Inauguration Festivities
Dedication of the brand new $20 million Grand Plaza with Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait, local dignitaries and NAMM Executive Committee, featuring a performance from U.S. Marine Corps band kicks off the 2013 NAMM Show, a change from the long-standing tradition of starting the show with the Fernand L. Petiot All-Industry Memorial Marching Band

Carlsbad, CA (December 3, 2012) – The opening of the 2013 NAMM Show on January 24, 2013 marks not only the start of the world’s premier gathering for the music instrument and product industry, but also the debut of the Anaheim Convention Center’s new outdoor venue, The Anaheim Grand Plaza.  To make full use of the Grand Plaza, NAMM has booked four jam-packed days of live music, tributes, events and networking opportunities in the new, outdoor space.

Kevin Cranley, NAMM chairman of the board and president of Willis Music Company and the NAMM Executive Committee will welcome attendees and participate in ribbon cutting ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait, Anaheim Convention Center Executive Director Tom Morton and members of Anaheim City Council join the NAMM Executive Committee to dedicate the Grand Plaza at 9:50 a.m.

The new Anaheim Convention Center Grand Plaza runs between the Hilton and Marriott leading to the main entrance of the center. It features 100,000 square feet of outdoor meeting and event space and during the NAMM Show an outdoor stage for live performances. The new plaza paired with an expansion of the NAMM Show perimeter to the outer glass doors of the convention center will add a significant amount of new space for show attendees to enjoy. An expanded show floor, also means fewer badge check points once at the show in addition to new features including a NAMM Member center, Digital Hub and First Look product showcases in the lobby.

Following the ribbon cutting, the 1st Marine Division Band from Camp Pendleton will perform on the plaza. The 50-piece band will then enter the Anaheim Convention Center to march through the aisles, serenading show-goers with “The Star-Spangled Banner” and other patriotic songs.  Because of the many scheduled opening activities around the new plaza, the Fernand L. Petiot All-Industry Memorial Marching Band, which traditionally opens the NAMM Show will not perform.

The NAMM Show’s exciting opening day continues with what has become one of the most important industry traditions, the Annual Tribute, an event honoring the leaders of the music-making industry who have passed away in the last year. Tribute takes place on the Grand Plaza’s Main Stage on Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m. There will be a commemorative photo and video presentation accompanied by the LA Scots, considered the premier pipe band in the U.S.

The first day culminates with Tower of Power performing live on the plaza. Tower of Power has been playing together since the late 1960s when they, alongside such legendary bands as Santana, the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane, helped to define “The San Francisco Sound.” Known for their soulful urban vibe and powerful horn section, Tower of Power will perform their greatest hits to celebrate a busy day of business at the NAMM Show.

The NAMM Show gathers 90,000 members of the music product industry from around the world to preview new product debuts from more than 4000 of brands across every category. Registration is now open for qualified members of the music instrument, product and pro-light and sound industries. Exhibit space is still available for the 2013 event. Learn more about the 2013 NAMM Show at http://www.namm.org/thenammshow/2013.
