Andy Powell,Pat McManus: Wishbone Ash - North America Spring Tour

Danbury, CT - Wishbone Ash, one of the most influential guitar bands in the history of rock, kicks off the North American leg of their 2013 tour on February 28. The group returns to these shores following a successful spring tour last year to celebrate the release of their highly acclaimed studio album, 'Elegant Stealth', and on the heels of the 'RoadWorks 3' release, a collection of live performances.

During the Elegant Stealth Tour of 2012, Wishbone Ash played to full houses in the Northeast and Midwest. The upcoming North American Tour features many familiar venues plus several new stops, including dates on the West Coast and in Canada.

Released in November 2011 by ZYX Music, 'Elegant Stealth' represents a benchmark in the evolution of Wishbone Ash. Signature twin-lead melodies and a powerhouse rhythm section frame 11 new tracks that reflect a diverse realm of styles and moods.

Formed in 1969, Wishbone Ash has more than 20 original studio recordings and several live albums to their credit. On Elegant Stealth, the group coalesces around strong songwriting and serious chops. Founding member Andy Powell handles lead vocals and trades licks with Finland’s guitar wizard Muddy Manninen. Bassist Bob Skeat, a 15-year veteran of the band and in-demand studio musician, sets the pace with Joe Crabtree, one of the best of Britain’s new breed of drummers, having played with Pendragon and David Cross of King Crimson. The band demonstrates its versatility on 'Elegant Stealth', from the pop/rocker “Reason to Believe” to the gentler vibe of “Give it Up” to tunes like “Warm Tears” and “Big Issues,” where the band gets to stretch out and flex its musical muscles.

Classic Rock Revisited’s Jeb Wright called 'Elegant Stealth' “one of the best albums in Wishbone Ash’s 42 year career.”

Keith “MuzikMan” Hannaleck of MuzikReviews.com said, “This band is like a fine wine that just keeps getting better with age and this is one of their strongest studio releases in years.”

“The songs are catchy, very technical, but there is a soul in what Wishbone Ash is doing!” said Mark Kadzielawa of 69 Faces of Rock.

Citing Wishbone Ash as an influence on their style, Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden, Southern Rock outfits like Lynyrd Skynyrd and, more recently, heavyweights like Opeth and some of the guitar- based Indie/Alternative bands, have all taken a little something from the legendary twin-guitar approach of Wishbone Ash. Truly, there is no other rock band on the planet that has done more with the twin guitar concept than the Ash.

This video was taken at the Winter NAMM Show for 2013 in Anaheim, CA. Andy James held a few clinics at the ESP booth and we recorded one of them. If you've never heard Andy play, I strongly suggest you check out some of his YouTube stuff.. He's a shred metal player with a crazy amount of talent. He has a bunch of solo albums available on iTunes. Also, check out his band, Sacred Mother Tongue. There are a few albums on there, but there is an EP of 4 songs that I really enjoyed. Thanks to Andy for being such a nice guy, answering questions and allowing us to film. I edited the Question and Answer segments between songs together and have posted it here. The songs are also posted, individually.

George Lynch: 1990 Harley-Davidson Softail for sale

'WOW.I can hardly believe that I'm parting with this...but I guess the time has come. I've decided to sell one of my Harley's! This bike is a BIG part of my personal & professional life and career. What I'm selling is my 1990 Harley Heritage Softail...THE Wicked Sensation bike!! THE bike on the artwork of the inside CD jacket from the Wicked Sensation CD and also my bike from the 'River of Love' video that I purchased new in Arizona back in 1990. I am the only owner/rider of this VERY comfortable ride...but YOU COULD BE NEXT!!This is such a great bike and has been a BIG part of my life, but I do have a newer Harley Dresser that I ride a lot more so instead of this Heritage just sitting and not being ridden, I wanted to auction it off to a lucky fan...or just someone that's looking for a really cool and comfortable ride. Very dependable, great looks and ride....all info, photos and spec's are posted on this ebay posting . It has a very affordable minimum reserve as well as a buy now set price.
I want to close with this..... Part of the proceeds from this sale will go to the Pulmonary Hypertention Association charity. Pulmonary Hypertention is a terrible medical condition that sadly ended the life of a young fan & niece of one of my friends. Alexandria Beeson (photo here) was only 23 years old when she passed away April 17, 2012. So keep this in mind please...that you're not just buyin' a bike...but helping a very worthy charity!! Bid high & bid often, please. Thanks, GL

Ron Thal: SDMETALROCKS interview NAMM 2013

Bumblefoot? What's a Bumblefoot? Well, besides an animal disease, a Bumblefoot just so happens to be not only one of the most accomplished and amazing guitarists you'll ever hear or see, but also one of the most genuine and amazing people you'll ever meet! I had the pleasure of speaking with Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal, lead guitarist for Guns N' Roses, while attending this year's NAMM Show at the Anaheim Convention Center. He explained the meaning behind his name, the joys of playing a residency tour in October/November at the Hard Rock Joint in Las Vegas, and shared personal hair-care secrets with yours truly! Thanks Ron, You Rock!!!

In what is a different take from the whole "take your time and tweak stuff" I shot this vid (with Chris Taylor from Laney as the kind-of-voluntary cameraman) in about 30 minutes - I simply took one of the 7-strings at Jaden's booth and proceeded to set the amp to fire and forget with a tone more akin to the stuff I used in Atonement.

Signal chain is simply guitar into the Ironheart Studio, recorded using USB and, for obvious reasons, no reamping took place. For authenticity's sake, I didn't resort to most post-processing safe for the usual tape delays in melody and lead parts, using mostly pickups and volume / tone pots for diversity.

Thanks to the guys from Laney for putting up with me, as well as the guys from the booth in front of the cab for understanding I had to use it, as I used that for recording in monition purposes (no time to configure the rig).

Gary Willis: Retro - the new CD

Gary Willis: Retro /Featuring Gergo Borlai and Albert Bover
One of the most formidable fretless electric bassists in the post-Jaco Pastorius era, Texas native and current Barcelona resident Gary Willis joins forces with Catalan keyboardist Albert Bover and Budapest-born drummer Gergo Borlai on this exhilarating take on the electric piano trio. Co-founder (with guitarist Scott Henderson) of the premiere fusion band Tribal Tech and former member of Wayne Shorter’s band, Willis and his highly interactive crew shift deftly from slamming funk (“Old School”) to percolating fusion (“Disconnectivity”) to aggressive swingers (“Change Agent,” ”Move”) while embracing quiet ballads (Paul McCandless’ “Amaryllis,” Milton Nascimento’s evocative “Tarde” or Willis’ aptly-titled “Dream”) with uncommon sensitivity and a lyrical touch. They also turn in expressive interpretations of the Lennon-McCartney classic “Norwegian Wood” and Bill Evans’ “We Will Meet Again.” And the album closes on a poignant note with Willis’ tasty, subtly reharmonized rendition of the Depression era standard “For All We Know,” a tune famously covered by the likes of Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole, Nina Simone and Donny Hathaway.

Says the great bassist of his impressive sidemen on Retro: “Gergo is an incredible drummer. I had done some playing with him in Budapest, and since he moved to Barcelona Albert and I have been able to work up some nice chemistry as a trio with him.

This new record is about us playing together. It’s not about big productions or anything, it’s just Rhodes, bass and drums. It’s a totally different direction from what I did last time (on 2007’s Actual Fiction, also on Abstract Logix). It shows what can happen when you just make it about the interpretation of the material and how we play together. And for that reason it’s maybe more personal than anything I’ve done before.”

From the modal opener “Change Agent” to the bubbling “Old School” (which recalls the old school funk-fusion of Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters) to the atmospheric “Tarde,” these three kindred spirits demonstrate a remarkable capacity to groove in loose-tight fashion throughout Retro. They collective burn through a labyrinth of chord changes on the uptempo romp “Move,” which is fueled by Willis’ urgent walking bass lines, and settle into on mellow accord on Oregon’s floating “Amaryllis” and a chill 3/4 take on the Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood.” Bover proves to be both a consummate accompanist and accomplished soloist from track to track while Borlai’s crisp, polyrhythmic pulse and supple brushwork fuel the proceedings. Willis’ virtuosic solo contributions here, particularly on “Disconnectivity” and “Move,” show why he is regarded as one of the most outstanding bassists on the scene today.  http://www.abstractlogix.com/xcart/product.php?productid=25705

“I just wanted to feature the fun of playing together and the expression that comes out in this stripped-down setting,” says Willis of his fifth album as a leader overall and second for Abstract Logix. “Whatever direction it’s going, we’re going to try to get into it pretty deep.” They’ve succeeded in brilliant fashion on Retro.

Tom Quayle: Dual Fusion - Coming soon from Wampler Pedals

Sometime in mid 2011 we received an email from Tom Quayle showing an interest in our pedals. So, after some discussion Tom bought a Euphoria and a Paisley Drive. From the moment he plugged them in, his tone had been taken a huge step forward.

When playing high energy Fusion, you need dirt that follows every move you make. It needs to allow the guitar to work and respond perfectly, and with Wampler Pedals, Tom found this.

When we got to meet Tom in person that following January in NAMM, a discussion took place where Tom told us what he loved about that combination and what wasn't quite working. We loved his thoughts. At the show, a concept was born that took just over 12 months to be realized.

Wampler Tom Quayle Dual Fusion Pedal

So, what was that idea? It was quite simple (well, it appeared that way). Take those two circuits, highlight the most usable tones, modify them extensively to ensure that they stack perfectly and then put them in the the same box. Also, make the stacking switchable... C1 into C2, or C2 into C1. While you are there, separate them with dedicated inputs/outputs should you use a looper switching system. Basically, make it as versatile and usable as possible.

Upon receiving the first prototype Tom said "The major improvement is just how amp-like the response is. In that department I have never played a pedal that is as good as this. It sounds exactly like a gainy tube amp and feels like one too. It's very exciting and fun to play through - you totally forget that you're playing a pedal."

How does it compare to the originals? Well, that is a good question. The main think you will notice when playing the Dual Fusion is that the gain structures are more refined on both sides, both sound slightly more natural and they are more organic. Transparency is the word. When you stack them together the transparency of them really shines through.
