Nick Johnston: discusses Public Display Of Infection new CD

My first release, "Public Display Of Infection" will be available this November!
'Public Display Of Infection' was created out of a need to hear instrumental guitar music where melody and songwriting come first. I wanted to have an album that could showcase guitar and still be full of hooks, melody lines and strong grooves. A song has to speak to you, even when there are no lyrics. This album features mind blowing drum performances from the amazing Travis Orbin. Rounding out the line up is Matt King : A long time musician, a huge part of my sound and an incredible bass player. With the help of these two stellar musicians, I was able to create a monster of an album! more

News: Masterclass in Recording Guitars

World-famous AIR Studios, London presents...
The AIR Weekender
A Masterclass in Recording Guitars
26-27 November 2011

The chance to spend a weekend at a legendary studio learning how to record guitars from guys who have worked with Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, The Rolling Stones and Sir George Martin doesn't come along often. So if you're serious about making your recordings better than they've ever been, you won't want to miss the AIR Weekender.

Presented by world-renowned producer Tony Platt (Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Iron Maiden), AIR Studios' engineer Rupert Coulson (Rolling Stones, William Orbit, Sir George Martin) and guest lecturer Professor Dave Fisher (former Director of Tonmeister Studies at the University of Surrey), the masterclass will cover electric, acoustic, classical and bass guitar recording techniques.

The guitar recording masterclass is designed for guitarists and anyone with an interest in sound recording or music production. You'll gain a thorough insight into the techniques, skills and processes required to obtain professional, studio-quality guitar recordings.

The weekend course, held at Lyndhurst Hall, Hampstead, London will feature performances, demonstrations and Q&A sessions with three legendary guitarists, including:

• Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music, David Gilmour, Brian Eno)
• Elliott Randall (Steely Dan, Carly Simon, Eddie Kramer)

Oz Noy: Twisted Blues new CD

New York based plectorist extraordinaire Oz Noy makes his Abstract Logix debut with "Twisted Blues", his most eclectic album to date that displays his signature guitar sounds as well as for the first time showcases his profound love of blues, featuring Chris Layton and Reese Wynans of the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan Band.

Oz is a chopsmeister of the highest order with a wealth of weapons in his trick bag. A master manipulator of tones and effects, he can deftly switch from lacerating single note work to Leslie-imbued organ stylings (a la Charlie Hunter) to jaw-dropping wah-wah-inflected lines…sometimes within the same song (as he does so nonchalantly on the scintillating title track). And while he emigrated to New York City in 1996 from his native israel, you'd swear he had a lengthy stopover in New Orleans by the sound of his authentic second line groover "Oh Really" featuring Allen Toussaint and his interpretation of The Meters' funk anthem, "Cissy Strut."

There's a touch of Stevie Ray Vaughan in his shuffling "Whole Tone Blues" and the tough "Steroids," and he brings a Hendrix-meets-Ry Cooder sensibility to his luminous ballad "You Are The State" with the help of Eric Johnson on second guitar. A fan of Thelonious Monk, Oz turns in highly impressionistic versions of the floating "Light Blue" and the chops-busting "Trinkle Tinkle," the latter performed with unrelenting aggression as an uptempo Texas shuffle. And he strikes a calming accord on the soulful, "Two Centers," which may remind SRV fans of Stevie's "Riviera Paradise." Like the title of a great Wes Montgomery album on Riverside from 1961, this stellar outing features So Much Guitar!

Twisted Blues which was recorded in one part in Austin featured the legendary Eric Johnson on guitar, Chris Layton on drums, Roscoe Beck on bass, Reese Wynans on the organ. The New York Sessions featured the amazing Vinnie Colaiuta and Anton Fig on drums, Will Lee on Bass, John Medeski and Jerry Z on organ, Allen Toussaint on the piano and Ralph McDonald on percussion. a stellar line up

Terry Syrek, Jeremy Krull: Machine Elves in the mix

Thanks to Jeremy Krull who is a great guitar player in his own right as well as studio mixing wizard.

Terry Syrek, Allan Holdsworth

Jeremy Krull has been working on finishing the mix for the new Dark Empire record which has been curtailed due to the recent freak snow storms in America. Jeremy has been working with the incredible musical genius Terry Syrek who is competeling a long awaited follow up to Aum

The new CD is tentatively titled "Machine Elves" which is the forthcoming full-length release

Jeremy Krull notes: "It's incredibly significant to me because I've studied with Terry since 1997 and I feel that seeing as how he's largely responsible for who I am today musically and as a player, it's an instance of a perfect repaying of the favor"

The new record is definitely heavier and a lot more atmospheric with Terry Syrek now using a 7 string guitars. Most of the tunes from this release are vocal, using the same drummer from Aum sessions.

Here's a recent video of Terry Syrek tracking some cool solos for the Machine Elves project... hard to believe that Terry also suffer from Focal Dystonia. Terry Syrek, to circumvent his focal distonia symtoms, recorded his entire album "AUM" with just two fully functioning fingers of his fret hand.

Greg Kalember records the drum track for "Machine Elves" for the new upcoming CD from Terry Syrek. This is the drum track along with scratch guitars and audio from the demo.
