Jason Becker: Super Hero - the Guitar Player interview

Mike Varney

I believe it was 1986 when Jason first sent me a demo tape. It was made on a 4-track cassette and showed even then that he was developing his own voice. That early demo, as rough as it was, showed promise for what Jason could be, and with Perpetual Burn he more than fulfilled that promise. He was growing every month in his playing, and Marty Friedman was a catalyst that helped Jason progress even faster. Between the time he recorded those demos at age 16 and Perpetual Burn a year later, quite a metamorphosis took place.

I think had Jason not gotten ill, he would have made a few more records that would have put him at the top of the guitar instrumentalist field, but ultimately he would have become somewhat bored with shredding and focused more on his abilities as a composer and orchestrator.

Jasun Tipton: Abnormal Thought Patterns, Live!!

Jasun Tipton - Guitars and Keys
Troy Tipton - Bass
Mike Guy - Drums
Richard Sharman - Guitars

Hailing from Northern California, twin brothers Jasun and Troy Tipton along with Mike Guy are the musicians that makes up Abnormal Thought Patterns.

In 2008, Jasun wrote and recorded "Velocity and Acceleration". A twelve minute instrumental that would unknowingly jumpstart Abnormal Thought Patterns. Upon hearing the song, Troy expressed to Jasun "It's time to put together an instrumental band". The Tipton brothers looked no further than longtime drummer and friend Mike Guy as the perfect fit for ATP. The three members tracked seven songs for CynNormal Lab Recordings.

The trio has previously released five albums with the Progressive-Metal act Zero Hour. Michael Rensen of the premier German magazine Rock Hard proclaimed, "Zero Hour is one of the five Best Progressive Newcomers in the late '90s!" This earned Zero Hour shows alongside such bands as Opeth, Cynic, Symphony X, All That Remains, The Human Abstract and Liquid Tension Experiment as well as successfully touring Europe and performing three times at Prog Power USA. The twins have also been guest columnists on the 'Chops from Hell' guitar site as well as releasing 2 instructional videos.

The band's 4 part epic "Velocity and Acceleration" and Troy's bass instrumental "Ulnar Nerve Damage" was mixed by talented Producer/Engineer Dino Alden (Marty Friedman, Zero Hour). Due to Dino's carpal surgeries the band reached out to Matt LaPlant (Sikth, Nonpoint) to mix "The Machine Within" and "Electric Sun". The EP was mastered by Alan Douches (Between The Buried and Me, The Dillinger Escape Plan). In order to complete the live sound, ATP recruited longtime friend and talented guitarist Richard Sharman. A student of Jasun's for many years and a great addition to the group.

Samantha Fish: Runaway new album details

The album's nine original songs and pair of covers incorporate "all the sounds I grew up with, with my own spin," says Fish, who seems to have spent her formative years in the Midwest soaking up a vast array of musical styles. Runaway features sharp-edged, riff-driven blues ("Down in the Swamp"), breakneck boogies ("Runaway"), smoky, late-night jazz ("Feeling Alright") as well as hints of the sultry 70s hard rock of Ann and Nancy Wilson and the 4/4 ruggedness of the Rolling Stones. Throughout, Fish demonstrates astonishing range and depth as a songwriter. Her vocals are cool, confident and nothing less than beguiling.

  • Runaway
  • Today's My Day
  • Money to Burn
  • Leavin' Kind
  • Otherside Of The Bottle
  • Soft And Slow

Marcos De Ros: Saci

Song from "Peças de Bravura".

Saci (pronounced: [saˈsi] or [sɐˈsi]) is a character commonly regarded to be the best known character in Brazilian folklore. He is a one-legged black or mulatto youngster with holes in the palms of his hands, who smokes a pipe and wears a magical red cap that enables him to disappear and reappear wherever he wishes (usually in the middle of a dust devil). Considered an annoying prankster in most parts of Brazil, and a potentially dangerous and malicious creature in others, he will nevertheless grant wishes to anyone who manages to trap him or steal his magic cap. However his cap is often depicted as having a bad smell, most people who claimed to have stolen this cap often say they can never wash the smell away.

An incorrigible prankster, the Saci will not cause major harm, but there is no little harm that he won't do. He will hide children's toys, set farm animals loose, tease dogs, and curse chicken eggs preventing them from hatching. In the kitchen, the Saci would spill all salt, sour the milk, burn the bean stew, and drop flies into the soup. If a popcorn kernel fails to pop, it is because the Saci cursed it. Given half a chance, he will dull the seamstress's needles, hide her thimbles, and tangle her sewing threads. If he sees a nail lying on the ground, he will turn it with the point up. In short, anything that goes wrong — in the house, or outside it — may be blamed on the Saci.
Besides disappearing or becoming invisible (often with only his red cap and the red glow of his pipe still showing), the Saci can transform himself into a Matitaperê or Matita Pereira, an elusive bird whose melancholic song seems to come from nowhere. One can escape a pursuing Saci by crossing a water stream: the Saci will not dare to cross, for then he will lose all his powers. Another way is to drop ropes full of knots; the Saci will then be compelled to stop and undo the knots. One can also try to appease him by leaving behind some cachaça, or some tobacco for his pipe.
He is fond of juggling embers or other small objects and letting them fall through the holes on his palms. An exceedingly nimble fellow, the lack of his right leg does not prevent him from bareback-riding a horse, and sitting cross-legged while puffing on his pipe (a feat comparable to the Headless Mule's gushing fire from the nostrils).
Every dust devil, says the legend, is caused by the spin-dance of an invisible Saci. One can capture him by throwing into the dust devil a rosary made of separately blessed prayer beads, or by pouncing on it with a sieve [1]. With care, the captured Saci can be coaxed to enter a dark glass bottle, where he can be imprisoned by a cork with a cross marked on it. He can also be enslaved by stealing his cap, which is the source of his power. However, depending on the treatment he gets from his master, an enslaved Saci who regains his freedom may become either a trustworthy guardian and friend, or a devious and terrible enemy.
