News: Award-winning Frank Turner to judge Shure Songwriting Award

The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance is pleased to announce that the judge for the Shure Songwriting Award 2013 will be the award winning folk-punk singer-songwriter Frank Turner. The competition has previously been judged by Amy McDonald, K.T. Tunstall, Paloma Faith and Everything Everything.

This acclaimed award, offered through a partnership between the Institute and Shure Distribution, aims to provide aspiring songwriters with an unrivalled opportunity to develop their talent. The winner will receive a unique opportunity to attend the Institute’s fantastic one-year Cert HE in Songwriting course free of charge – a prize worth over £5,000! They will also receive performance and studio microphones from Shure worth £500; the runner up will get a Shure SM58 microphone and a pair of Shure SRH440 studio headphones.

Initially the vocalist of post-hardcore band Million Dead, Frank Turner embarked upon a primarily acoustic-based solo career in 2005 following the band's split. To date, he has released four solo albums and four EPs; his fifth album, Tape Deck Heart, is due for release on 22 April 2013. He has been nominated for a number of awards including Best Solo Artist and Best Band Blog or Twitter in the 2011 and 2012 Shockwave NME Awards. In 2010 he won the Kerrang No Half Measures Award, and in 2011 Best Live Act and Hardest Working Artist in the AIM Awards.

Of judging the award he commented: ""I'm very happy to be involved in judging the Institute’s Shure Songwriting Award competition this year. Seeing new songwriting talent come through from aspiring young people, and encouraging it, is something that makes me very happy.""

To enter, all you have to do is upload an original song to www.ShureSongwritingAward.com by the, now extended, deadline of 29th May 2013. You will then have four weeks to try and gain as many public votes as possible. A combination of public votes and an expert panel of judges will select the top eight, with Frank Turner choosing the final prize-winners.

Jim Seekford: working on Darius Wave guitar lesson!

This is a guitar lesson from Darius Wave from guitar master class. This was very challenging for me and it still needs some work, however I have learned from this lesson that my timing and execution needs some attention. My left hand can not keep up with his shred version so I cheated a little.

This lesson was very fun and am very excited to work on the next one.

George Lynch: Shadow Train Interview George Lynch

This is a special interview because it is not only about music but also about "Shadowtrain: Under the Crooked Sky", the film you made with Mark Mclaughlin, and the band you made with other politically engaged musicians. First of all, congratulations for all your work! Can you tell us how it began, and if it was something you knew you would do one day?

I met Mark on a plane and discussed some of the ideas that are now a part of the film. As I was getting off the plane he revealed that he was a documentary film maker and we agreed to stay in touch, which we actually did! Mark and I have been tied at the hip ever since. By the way, we still have six months of work to do on Shadowtrain.

So, "Shadowtrain: Under the Crooked Sky" is a movie about the Native American community, I read that you are half Apache, is that true? Have you always been interested in the Native American culture and is it because of your origins?

No, but I am 100% mutt! Lol! The film is really more of an exploration of human nature through the lens of the Native American experience. And ultimately it deals with the root causes of economic and social injustice, which are products of our nature, and the fact that we are evolved complex creatures but we don't seem to be capable of evolving ethically or spiritually in any meaningful way.

Patrick Hemer: More than Meets the Eye Nightmare / MBR Music CD

Add caption
Progressive Metal meets virtuoso guitar playing and amazing vocal work in this stunning masterpiece that proves that the Progressive Metal label can definitely include well-crafted songs.

A long-respected studio musician, touring hired gun and guitar instructor, Patrick Hemer gained worldwide recognition at the dawn of the 2000’s as the main man and fretboard wizard of the German metal band HORIZON with whom he recorded a few cult albums, including the critically acclaimed “The Sky’s The Limit” (Massacre Records - 2002) and the outstanding “Worlds Apart” (Massacre/King - 2004) that received a warm welcome in Japan, thanks to the fervent support of legendary magazine Burrrn!.
Back to the world of recording studios for a while after the untimely break-up of Horizon, Patrick collaborated in numerous projects in a wide array of genres, started getting involved in production, and also devoted himself more and more to teaching to become an in-demand clinician maintaining strong contacts with the guitar community. But his deep, unwavering love for metal music finally had to take over again....

Now, teaming up with drummer extraordinaire Tom Wagner and keyboardist David Casanova, he has put together a new solo project meant to display his best, but also heaviest, playing and songwriting to date.

Patrick Hemer: More Than Meets The Eye
His current album, “More Than Meets The Eye” produced by Patrick himself, is a perfect balance of huge guitar riffs, amazing vocal work and Hemer’s trademark out of this world soloing, all backed up by clever arrangements and Tom Wagner’s brilliant drumming.

Definitely proving that Patrick Hemer belongs to the small club of the best players on the planet, “More Than Meets The Eye” is also a Progressive Metal masterpiece and a must for every fan of the genre.

Now, all the world’s Prog-Power Metal maniacs and shred guitar aficionados can feel confident in the future, they know that Patrick Hemer is here to keep the flame alive and well…

Andrew Gerard: String skipping

OK, so if you like shredding guitar, check out a lick from a solo of mine. I usually play this type of lick with a muted hammer on / picking combination where I pick every 1rst and 4th note... You can alternate pick it as well, but live and sweating you risk string noise from the skips.

Michael Hebo: Meshuggah - Demiurge

I feel like I say this every time I upload a video, but as it has been such a long time since last time, I tried to put some extra effort in making this one.

I've had a broken thumb that has taken forever to heal up. So that's why I've been away fr such a long time.

I've also gone back to school, so I've been occupied with that + work ... and battlefield 3.
Some excuses are better than others I guess, haha.

Matt Davis: City of New York, 2013 - the album, your chance to participate!

Aerial Photograph performing the first installment of City of New York, 2013 @ Spectrum, NYC
Help fund original music inspired by the stories of New Yorkers.
Launched: Mar 20, 2013
Funding ends: Apr 19, 2013

Hello, grassroots supporters of the arts!

The Concept

My name is Matt Davis and I'm a guitar player, bandleader, composer, and lover of good stories. This year, I am combining all of these abilities and interests to create a yearlong project, “City of New York, 2013.” This project has me writing music about the people who call NYC home. Each month of this year I have conversations with New Yorkers from a wide range of backgrounds. I record these conversations, and write music that is inspired by these people and their stories for my large ensemble, "Aerial Photograph." The band rehearses the compositions, records the music, and does a live performance every month. The intent of this project is to share stories of people, relationships, memories, hope, failure, love, happiness, and the ups and downs of life that we all experience. Each month is focused on a different community:

Irene Ketikidi: Shreddelicious reviews the ripping new album!

Irene Ketikidi Ripping it up!
Irene Ketikidi delivers ten songs, that’s over 40 minutes of rocking music, packed full of great tunes and great rock guitar. The production is great, ably handled by James Richmond. Irene’s tunes are not derivative, being well paced and thoughtfully put together, delivering memorable tunes. The rhythm section features Darby Todd and Dave “Wolverine” Marks grooving in harmony, adding their skills in the form of drums and Wolverine style bass lines. Justin Sandercoe, Phil Hilborne and Dave Kilminster burst in for the last track, showing the respect that top line guitar players have for Irene’s skills.

So here’s my take on each track. The full review http://www.shreddelicious.com/2013/04/irene-ketikidi-new-album-i-cant-help.html
