Richard Hallebeek,Shawn Lane: talks about his meeting with the late genius in the Abstract Logix interview

Richard Hallebeek

NS: What did you take away from recording and playing with the late Shawn Lane? I can hear his influence in your playing.

RH: Shawn was spending lots of time in Holland in the last years of his life, in The Hague. I write for a music magazine called Music Maker in Holland, I interview musicians and that way I get to ask my favorite musicians I the questions that I never see in the bigger guitar magazines. I met up with Shawn for an interview, it clicked, and we ended up hanging out together over the year after that. I came back more than once to his place, we listened to music, talked about movies and books and we played together. I also took lessons from him that ended up in three-hour jams.

The thing I remember from Shawn is that he was such a modest, friendly person. No ego, no ugly vibes, just such a beautiful person with so much interest in everything around him, and the love and warmth in his personality. He was always so curious and eager to learn.

I also took care of a couple of gigs for him and a clinic at the Amsterdam conservatory. I helped him out carrying his amps and setting up his gear for him since he was too sick to do that. Just being around somebody like Shawn before and during a gig is inspirational, to say the least.

I remember sitting with Shawn in my home studio in Amsterdam to record RHPI and he would sit there, listen to the track, close his eyes, get some coffee, some yoghurt, then pick up his guitar and just burn it on the very first take. Those "takes" are what you hear on the album. Shawn always said that he liked to be captured before the first take, if that would even be possible, because he thinks he sounds best that way at the very first takes, or even, before a first take, when he’s just warming up.

So I cannot really pinpoint a certain thing or a lick at his lesson that it is that I got from spending time with Shawn. It’s just his whole personality and the way he looked at the world around him that was inspiring to me.

Brandon Brown: Awesome talent looking for sponsorship for Berklee College Of Music in Boston

I have just been accepted into the Berklee College Of Music in Boston. I am from Scotland and unfortunately do not have the much needed funds to achieve my dream. Only a handful of people from Scotland have ever been accepted but what's even greater is that I have received a partial tuition scholarship - I am 16 years old and one of the youngest ever. I desperately don't want my dream to slip away after coming this far. Please help!

Ethan Brosh, Nili Brosh, Yngwie Malmsteen: Ethan talks about the up with Yngwie Malmsteen on

Ethan has called this his “biggest professional challenge yet”:

“Yngwie is one of the biggest rock guitar player legends of all time. To go on right before him every single night after traveling so many miles is a challenge. Yngwie is one of my all time favorite players and for a good reason, He really is the king of what he does. I don't want to go out there and be some lame opening act, I have to show that I’m really up there playing and performing wise. And NOT another guy that is trying to sound like Yngwie. I will also have fans that are going to be there and I don’t want to let them down. And a lot of people who don't know who I am are going to be there and I have a lot to prove to them, Especially since they will be coming to see Yngwie.”

Joining Ethan on the tour will be his sister, Nili Brosh – another fabulous guitarist we've been following. In an interview back in 2011, Ethan mentioned that “the day would come …” when he and Nili might tour together. We asked if he ever imagined that it would be something like a tour with Yngwie.

“Nili had played in my instrumental group before she had moved to California so it just made sense…I don't have to worry about Nili getting all the parts down just like the record so that works well. I definitely didn't expect an Yngwie tour at all but I was hoping for one. It’s one of those things you think about and feel like it may happen in the far future if you’re lucky, Then it actually happens and your life has a new reality.”

Steve Hackett: Guests On Debut CD By UK Prog Band Lifesigns

Steve Hackett,Jakko Jakszyk,Nick Beggs: Lifesigns
Steve Hackett Guests On Debut CD By UK Prog Band Lifesigns

London, UK – Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the latest release on new front-line label, Esoteric Antenna, dedicated to new releases by both new acts and established artists. Lifesign's eponymous release has the hallmarks of being one of the finest progressive rock albums of 2013! Making the album even more impressive is the guest appearances from such respected figures in progressive music as Steve Hackett, Thijs Van Leer (focus), Jakko Jakszyk (King Crimson), and Robin Boult (John Young Band).

Lifesigns Album Release 2013

Lifesigns features John Young (keyboards, lead vocals), Nick Beggs (bassist, Chapman Stick player, backing vocals) and Frosty Beedle (drums). The material reflects the excellence of the musicians who perform on the album. John Young is a classically trained composer, keyboardist and vocalist, who has worked with the likes of Asia, the Strawbs, Greenslade, Fish, Uli Jon Roth and his own John Young Band. He also tours with Bonnie Tyler. Bassist/Stick player Nick Beggs was the founding member of 80s group Kajagoogoo and has worked with artists like Alphaville, Belinda Carlise, John Paul Jones, Gary Numan, Steve Hackett, Steve Howe, Tina Turner and many others. He is currently on tour with Steven Wilson. Drummer Frosty Beedle has worked with the likes of the Cutting Crew, Sarah Brightman, Russell Watson and Zucchero.

Here's what the press have been raving about Lifesign's debut album:

“'Lifesigns' is a tremendous listening experience... It's extremely well written, the playing is superbly engaging, tones are tweaked to perfection, and the vocals are just amazing!” - Tony Conley, Rock Guitar Daily
“This is a stunning example of when Prog gets it right!” -
“These fine musicians have created quite their own 'voice', a fresh new leaf on the solid old progtree and what a leaf!!” - Prog Planet
“There have been precious few modern British bands making albums on the same level as the classic symphonic bands, you know, the ones who invented progressive rock. Which makes Lifesigns a nearly a national treasure. You'll hear similarities to Peter Gabriel, YES, Genesis, National Health, Happy The Man, Bruford, and a couple others we're overlooking, but it doesn't sound retro or derivative. We don't often write 'must have' but there, we've done it!" - Kenesis
Working with engineer Steve Rispin (Asia, Uriah Heep, Dave Kilminster, Snakecharmer), 'Lifesigns' is a tuneful, innovative and hugely impressive debut album certain to appeal to those who appreciate the finer aspects of modern Progressive Rock.
