Hello, and welcome to my new Guitar World instructional column. In the coming months, I'll share with you some of the guitar-playing concepts and approaches that have helped me develop my technique and overall playing style. I'd like to start off with an examination of ascending scalar shapes that, by design, cover the majority of the fretboard.

I have found such patterns to be very useful for both melodic and shred-style playing and also very helpful in regard to the "greater mission," which is to gain a fuller and deeper understanding of the construction of musical ideas within the framework of the guitar's fretboard.

The following examples are built from phrases made up of three notes per string that are played across two strings, resulting in various six-note shapes. I play these shapes in a rhythm of straight 16th notes, however, so there is an inherent "threes on twos" kind of rhythm that is alluded to throughout.

Fred Brum: Ryūjin - Taurus Stomphead 4 HG / Zebu delay and reverb

Fred Brum - Ryūjin - Taurus Stomphead 4 HG / Zebu delay and reverb
My album Atonement is available (along with a free downloadable track at http://fredbrum.com/atonement/ - please give it a listen. :) Official Website -http://www.fredbrum.com Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/FredTheShredBrum This video features a Taurus Stomphead 4 High Gain amp (as the name implies, a fully fledged channel switching amp in a pedal format - clever!) and their Zebu pedal, a 2 in 1 reverb / delay pedal that allows you to mix delay and reverb with great flexibility, featuring my track Ryūjin (it'll be released with my new album Transcendence). Guitars used are a Jaden Rose Original Series 7 with a set of Misha Mansoor's signature Juggernauts and a KxK 7DC with Bare Knuckle Pickups Nailbomb bridge / VH2 neck. In the rhythm tracks, the Stomphead is boosted with a custom Tubescreamer-like pedal set to TS808 settings as to not add unfamiliar factors. No post processing other than high bandpass filtering on the stacked rhythms was used on the track, and all the delays and reverbs come from the Zebu. Cab was an old Rectifier 4x12" mic'd off axis with a SM57, into a Presonus Firestudio.

It was the first time they had been together since 1973. They recorded a brand new studio album, "Perfect Strangers" and headed out on tour. This show was filmed in Melbourne, Australia and is the only full length concert film of the band at this time. It's a stunning concert with the band in incendiary form. The setlist mixes then new tracks from the "Perfect Strangers" album with favourites from the early seventies culminating in the brilliant "Smoke On The Water" finale. This is without doubt one of the finest Deep Purple concerts ever filmed and a must have for their legions of fans. Available 14/10/2013

Derryl Gabel: Fusion Solos - transcriptions of the solos from the Dweezilla 2013

Fusion Solos
Contained in this CD-ROM is transcriptions of all my guest solos from the Dweezilla 2013 project. This includes the entire transcription of my tune "Breath of Life" (excluding the other guest soloists on that tune).
This is some of my best soloing ever recorded so I'm very pleased to share it with you and reveal how it was played. For the last couple of months I've worked very hard on meticulously capturing what was recorded so every pick stroke, hammer, pull-off, tap, and finger pluck is notated. Each transcription is beautifully done in the Guitar Pro 6 and PDF formats. Guitar Pro 6 allows you to loop and slow down individual licks and or sections to practice with. If you don't have Guitar Pro 6 software I have included all the parts in the PDF format as well. Each GP6 and PDF file contains the transcription of the guitar solo, the rhythm guitar, and bass parts in guitar tab and standard notation. I have also included liner notes and gear setup as well. Over 100 pages in all! Not only that but you will have mp3s of my guest solos, my new tune "Breath of Life" in it's entirety, and even some outtake mp3s! My tune "Breath of Life" features AMAZING playing by Chad Wackerman on drums, Jimmy Johnson on bass (yes, I transcribed his entire bass track), Chanan Hanspal on keys and synth, guest guitar solos by Tom Quayle, Oz Noy, Dweezil Zappa, Chanan Hanspal, James Santiago, and Chris Buono. Go to my website home page, to the media player for some audio clips.

Monte Pittman: Performs Video Demos of All Orange Amplifiers

Monte Pittman Performs Video Demos of All Orange Amplifiers

Award winning, chart topping guitarist, Monte Pittman, has just come out of the studio where he has been recording a series of high quality videos demonstrating all Orange Amplification products. Monte has also just finished recording his third album ‘The Power of Three’. To celebrate, Orange is debuting five of his most metal video demos!

Dark Terror Guitar Head - Metal

Monte Pittman, a long-standing Orange endorsee, said ‘I've proudly been endorsing Orange Amplifiers for over 10 years now. After touring numerous times around the planet with different acts, I have seen first hand that Orange make the most amazing amps in the world.’ He added, ‘they have a sound quality that cuts through any mix and reigns in a league of its own. They can handle the wear and tear of touring and bring out the best in your playing. There is a lot of heart and soul from the members of the company and you see the results in the product itself.’

In these raw, honest video demonstrations Monte checks out the Dark Terror, the menacingly small head with a mind-blowing sound and formidable gain; he shows off the face-melting metal tone of the TH100; demonstrates the awesome power and killer tones of the Thunderverb 200; puts the Jim Root #4 Terror, the perfect high gain partner, through its paces; and shows off the versatility of the top of the range twin channel OR100 delivering classic Orange styling and tone. In each video he tries out the diverse characteristics of the featured amp, demonstrates the use of the clean and dirty channels, and shows what each piece of kit can achieve as he pushes them to the limits; in short he brings the products to life.

‘A Dark Horse’, the first single from Monte’s third album, is out 14th October 2013 and reflects Monte’s return to his metal roots while demonstrating his Orange gear sound and tone to perfection. You can hear the track at http://metalblade.com/montepittman

Flemming Rasmussen, famous for Metallica’s seminal album ‘Master Of Puppets’, produced the album, ‘The Power Of Three’, which is set for release on Metal Blade in UK & Europe on the 20th January 2014, North America (1/21), Germany, Austria, Scandinavia and Italy (1/17). The album is hard and heavy and follows on from Monte’s highly successful, critically acclaimed second album ‘Pain, Love & Destiny’, which reached number one in both the rock and pop charts. Recorded in Copenhagen, it features Kane Ritchotte on drums and Max Whipple on bass.

You can see Monte’s new videos on the Orange website at

The Power of Three, from award winning, chart topping guitarist MONTE PITTMAN, is set for release through Metal Blade Records. Flemming Rasmussen, famous for Metallica's seminal album 'Master Of Puppets', produced the album, The Power Of Three, which is hard and heavy and follows on from Monte's highly successful, critically acclaimed second album 'Pain, Love & Destiny', which reached number one in both the rock and pop charts.

Artist Cam Rackam created the artwork for the cover of The Power of Three. The piece features a portrait of Charon, the ferryman of Hades who carries souls of the newly deceased across the rivers Styx and Acheron that divided the world of the living from the world of the dead. This represents Monte's musical journey from what he has done before and where he is now with The Power of Three and beyond.

Andy James: Sacred Mother Tongue - implodes and leaves with a farewell tour.

Acclaimed British metal act Sacred Mother Tongue announce today that their forthcoming co-headline tour with Voodoo Six will be the last shows they will ever play. Having released their second album, ‘Out Of The Darkness’, to rave reviews earlier this year on both sides of the Atlantic, but been unable to reach the wider audience they need to survive, the band have decided that now is the right time to call an end to their existence.

A statement from lead singer Darrin South follows:

"I am deeply saddened to announce that this upcoming tour with Voodoo Six will be Sacred Mother Tongue's last. This is a gut wrenching decision that has troubled us all for some time, but alas, with a heavy heart we have decided to bite the bullet and bring an end to the band.

So with what will now be, our farewell tour, we're gonna play the hell outta these shows as if our lives depended on it. Come along as it will be your last chance to see Sacred Mother Tongue perform, and we're gonna make sure it's a memorable tour for all.

Our favourite thing to do is play shows and bring new music to the world; performing our songs on the road and interacting with our fans is the most rewarding experience we can imagine. But with the current climate and the effects the Internet has had on the music industry, each tour we do costs us far too much money. We obviously receive support from our label, and generally get back 'some' of what you pay for your ticket, but it’s a far cry from being enough to keep the band on the road, and the result is that we spend all our own money to come and play for you guys which is impossible for us to sustain. Hopefully you'll go easy on us for our decision.

We have spent the better part of ten years building this band from the ground up, starting as a covers outfit back in 2004, so the decision has, by no means come lightly to us. But the saddening truth that we must face up to is that it simply isn't Sacred's time. Our music hasn't inspired people in the way that we had hoped and a general lack of interest from the public has caused us issues with funding and promotion for years. The band simply cannot carry on like this despite the fact that we love what we do, and still believe, 100% in our music and what Sacred stands for. But much like a failing business, the time has come to cut our losses and move on.

It would be very arrogant for us to blame this 'failure' on the industry, or funding, or poor management, but the fact of it is; the band just isn't popular enough. We have always been committed to our music; we've never taken direction from management or our peers and have always done what 'we' wanted to do. We've always held our heads high in the knowledge that our integrity is intact, and we have continued with our work, in a category that we believe makes us a 'real' band. A band with no frills, no lies, no gimmicks… just great music. Perhaps this has been detrimental to us, perhaps not; either way this is the only way any of us were, and still are, interested in working as musicians.

We've had a great ride, released two albums, performed on the main stage at several festivals, toured all over the UK as well as Europe and even China! We've played with some outstanding bands, met some amazing people and gathered humbling support from our devoted fans over the years, and in many eyes we may have cracked it. We've certainly loved every minute of it; we’ve put Sacred on the map and will hopefully be remembered as a great band of its time.

It does however feel like charity work from our side and we're not getting any younger, our lives feel like they're on hold whilst we sit in this 'limbo' area of the music industry. Doing what we love for free is one thing, but to beg, steal and borrow every penny we can to do what we love has become a real grind.

Our team at Transcend Music, especially our manager Rob Ferguson, have always done the best they can for us, investing thousands of pounds in us, not to mention the time and dedication they have shown, and we are eternally grateful for the help and support that has gone into this band. But all efforts aside, they’ve taken us as far as they can. The leap to the next level -- where we could consider ourselves professional musicians and make our living doing what we love -- is just too far out of reach.

So with all this in mind, it is in fact, time to call it a day. We've had a great time and we've been greeted with some great support from the fans, and many areas of the press and industry alike. We are truly humbled by this whole experience and would like to thank each and every one of you that showed us your support and above all, believed in Sacred Mother Tongue.

See you on the road later this month, let’s make this farewell tour a blast!"
