Jeff Kollman: issues 'Jeff & Tommy Kollman - Teen Metal Years' archives release; annouces new COSMOSQUAD studio album

June 20, 2016 - Acclaimed L.A.-based guitarist JEFF KOLLMAN (BOMBASTIC MEATBATS, COSMOSQUAD, GLENN HUGHES) has issued 'Jeff & Tommy Kollman - Teen Metal Years', a collection of 18 songs written and recorded in 1983 and 1984 as the rock'n'roll crazed Toledo, Ohio based brothers honed their chops in their parents' basement prior to the formation of their first band, VXN, and its successor, EDWIN DARE, a popular progressive metal Midwest touring act throughout the 1990s, with 3 album releases to their credit.

States Kollman: "I was a bit hesitant at first to put this out but now I'm happy these recordings are finally available for the fans to hear. The early to mid 80's was a magical time for me and my brother Tommy as we pretended to be the VAN HALEN brothers and just jammed away and learned how to play our instruments and put together songs, all instrumental stuff since we didn't have a singer yet. I was 15, 16 years old then and heavily into all the guitar heroes of the day - Randy Rhoads was my guy, but I was also into

Michael Schenker, Gary Moore, Akira Takasaki from LOUDNESS and Yngwie, of course. Eventually, we purchased a Fostex X-154-track recorder so we could record ourselves in our parents' basement. We probably wrote something like 150 songs altogether. When I began to transfer the old tapes to digital last year, I was amazed how good the quality was and decided to pick out the best stuff for release. The album is also a nod to my brother Tommy who passed away a few years ago and a way to remember all the good times we had back then."

In other news, Kollman and musical partner-in-crime/drummer, Shane Gaalaas, have just finished tracking the long awaited forthCOSMOSQUAD studio album, the follow-up to 2008's 'Acid Test', which features Kevin Chown (BOMBASTIC MEATBATS, TARJA,PAUL GILBERT) on bass. "We wrote the whole thing over the course of like 6 weeks, with a one-week break when Kevin wasn't available, and Shane is now in charge of mixing it while I'm out of town. I'm really stoked how everything turned out and I think we've taken things to another level on this album. Stylistically, it's pretty much a continuation of 'Acid Test' but there's also a couple of jazzier and more etherial things. We're not sure about all the song titles yet but 'Morbid Tango' will be the opener; there's also 'Rick James'(which will make sense when you hear it), 'Anatomy Of A Beatdown', 'Amnesia', a ballad called 'Carol Butterfly', which is dedicated to Shane's mom, and a re-worked version of 'Recollection' off my 2015 acoustic release, 'Hills of Granada.' We're looking at a possible September release right now but we'll have to see."

Jeff Kollman is currently on a 10-day tour of shows and clinics in Japan where he has cultivated a strong fanbase going back to the EDWIN DARE days. Exact dates and venues are as follows:

June 20 - Jack Lion, Ibaraki, Osaka
June 21 - Always, Kobe, Hyogo
June 22 - Rag, Kyoto
June 23 - Roxx Sakae, Nagoya, Aichi
June 25 - Shock On, Kawaguchi, Saitama
June 27 - Area 559, Fukushima
June 28 - Live House enn 2nd, Sendai, Fukushima
June 30 - Motion Blue, Yokohama, Kanagawa

News: Michael Kelly Expands Mod Shop with Burl and Duncan

Michael Kelly Expands Mod Shop with Burl and Duncan

Michael Kelly Guitars announces the release of the Mod Shop 50 Burl Deluxe, the latest guitar in their Mod Shop program. This new model is a customized version of Michael Kelly’s popular burl and gold adorned Custom Collection model that has been modified around new pickups from Seymour Duncan. All of the Michael Kelly Mod Shop guitars are designed in collaboration with the best pickup manufacturers and customized using a predefined combination of pickups along with hot-rodded wiring enhancements.

Created in collaboration with Seymour Duncan pickups, the Burl Burst comes equipped with the best-selling Duncan Quarter Pounder set, which delivers fat, sparkly tones. The Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound Lead and Rhythm pickups provide humbucker-level punch and saturation in a true single-coil package.

The Michael Kelly Quad Mod electronics modification was also added to the Burl Burst. The MK Quad Mod expands sonic options by replacing the standard three-way switch with a four-way switch, adding a fourth pickup setting that turns on both neck and bridge pickups in series to create a thick, punchy humbucker-inspired tone.

The 50 Burl Burst features a highly figured burl maple top, alder body, and a bolt-on maple neck. The bird’s eye maple fretboard has 22 medium jumbo frets with dot inlays, a 25.5” scale length, 10.5”to 16” compound radius, bird’s eye maple headstock, and bone nut. MK die-cast tuning keys, a T-Vintage ashtray bridge, and gold hardware complement the Burl Burst’s exotic look.

The new Mod Shop 50 Burl Deluxe is making its debut at the Summer NAMM show in Nashville. The Mod Shop program made its debut at the winter 2016 NAMM show in January. Mod Shop guitars make it possible for guitars players to experience high-end boutique options without boutique prices.

Tom Hess: Three Major Mistakes You Need To Avoid While Playing Guitar Scales

Three Major Mistakes You Need To Avoid While Playing Guitar Scales
by Tom Hess
Surely you already know that scales are an important part of guitar playing, but only a few guitarists actually understand how to practice scales properly. Because of this, they cannot improvise excellent solos and struggle with musical creativity.
Here are the three major mistakes you need to avoid when you practice scales on guitar:

Mistake #1. Learning Scales In 1-2 Positions On Guitar
To master any new scale, you must learn to play it all over the fretboard. Getting stuck playing scales in 1-2 areas on the guitar severely limits your creativity.
To avoid this problem, you must consistently practice fretboard visualization. Visualize the guitar neck as ONE giant scale pattern and learn to navigate it fluently.
Warning: many systems for learning scales make this step very hard (more on this below). Work with a proven guitar teacher to learn how to visualize scales easily and fast.

Mistake #2. Learning Without Application
Learning more scales doesn't make you a better guitar player - applying the scales you know on a deeper level does.
When you learn any new scale, learn how to improvise with it and become familiar with its sound. Listen to guitar players who use this scale, create your own guitar licks with it and learn how this scale is applied in songs you love. When you feel confident enough with a scale to use it in improvising, you have mastered it on a deep enough level to learn another scale if you wish.
Note: this does NOT mean you must only practice one scale for years…just don’t overwhelm yourself with dozens of scales you never learn how to use.

Mistake #3. Not Following An Effective Process For Learning Scales On Guitar
You must have an effective process for: learning, visualizing and applying any new scale in your guitar playing.
Do NOT assume that “any system for learning scales is equally valid”. Many systems for learning scales on guitar are incomplete and damaging to your progress. The CAGED system is one such system. Using it creates A LOT of problems in your guitar technique and musical creativity.
Get information on why the CAGED system is harmful for your guitar playing progress and a better way to play guitar scales.
Avoid these mistakes in your guitar practicing and you will become a better guitarist and musician a lot faster.

Tom Hess: How To Play Awesome Lead Guitar Solos By Analyzing The Vocal Techniques Of King Diamond - Part 2

How To Play Awesome Lead Guitar Solos By Analyzing The Vocal Techniques Of King Diamond - Part 2
by Tom Hess
Observing the singing styles of vocalists is a great way to make your lead guitar playing sound more emotional.

Previously, you discovered many approaches for using King Diamond’s vocal style to improve your lead guitar solos.

The following are 3 more:
1. Play Guitar Harmonies And Solos With Layered Harmony
Using harmony (2 or more notes played together) in a phrase, lick or solo can make it sound very interesting and exciting. Using layered harmonies is a method for making a regular harmony sound even more exciting.
The following music video show how King Diamond uses layered harmonies in his music:
(check out 7:23-8:54)
The following exercise helps you make your own layered harmonies:

Step 1: Set the click of your metronome to a moderate speed. Use recording software (or your phone) to record as you play an “A” on the 14th fret of the G string. Allow this note to ring out for ten beats. Hear it.

Step 2: Now, record a “C” note on fret thirteen of the B string – only this time, record it starting on the third beat. This creates harmony with the “A” note from the last step. The “A” note rings on its own through the first couple of beats. Hear it.

Step 3: Finally, record an “E” on the seventeenth fret of the B string right when beat 5 begins. This will give you a third layer for the harmony. Hear it.
How To Play Creative Guitar Solosuploading pictures
You have just made a harmony for an A minor chord, but spread the notes over several beats rather than playing them together at once.
This guitar soloing video gives you tons of ideas on the topic of playing very expressive guitar solos.

2. Create Variation In The Texture Of Your Guitar Licks And Solos
King Diamond creates a lot of variety in his vocal phrasing using various techniques (such as low growls and high, clean falsetto). He utilizes growls to produce a much thicker texture in his melodies. When he uses high falsetto phrases, it makes the texture of his melodies a lot thinner. Check out the video from 35:11 - 36:01 to hear what this sounds like.
You can imitate the same growling effect he uses by using double stops in your guitar soloing. Double stops are a technique that is achieved by playing two notes at the same time (during your lick or solo). This will make the texture of your melodies a lot thicker.
This video demonstrates how double stops sound:

3. Get Good At Pitch Variation & Guitar Phrasing Fluency
King Diamond is a master when it comes to effortlessly combining techniques such as high falsetto, layered harmonies, guttural growls and creative vibrato. By using a variety of techniques, he makes the music much less predictable and more exciting for the listener. Your guitar playing will feel the same way as well once you have mastered guitar phrasing fluency.
Guitar phrasing fluency refers to being able to combine together all the phrasing techniques you know. When you can do this, you create pitch variation and your guitar solos become more creative and exciting to listen to.
This is an exercise that helps you become proficient at creating pitch variation and playing with guitar phrasing fluency:

1. Create a list of every guitar phrasing technique you already know how to use (These guitar soloing columns aid you with this).

2. Create/improvise a short guitar lick of no more than 5 notes and play it again and again. While doing this, focus on either the first and last note of the phrase, or whichever note(s) you sustain for the longest period of time.

3. Whenever you repeat the lick, utilize alternate phrasing ornaments when playing the first and last notes. For instance:

-Play notes in the higher range (similar to how King Diamond uses his falsetto to sing at higher octaves) at times when it is unexpected. This is especially cool when used at the end of a phrase.
-Use double stops to add texture.
-Use vibrato in a variety of different ways (such as using it in a delayed manner, playing wide/narrow vibrato, etc.).
-Apply vibrato to both the notes in a double stop (this sounds killer!).
-Use a variety of phrasing elements to accentuate a single note. Here is an example: play the last note in the phrase by quickly moving up to a higher octave, use a double stop, then use the tremolo bar to add heavy vibrato to both notes (or you can add it manually if you don’t have a tremolo system).

This pitch variation exercise trains you to improve your fluency with a variety of guitar phrasing techniques.
This video presents you with even more ideas about playing very expressive guitar solos.

The Cavern Wall of Fame

In 1997 to celebrate the Cavern’s 40th anniversary and as a tribute to the many performers who appeared at the Club before its closure in 1973, the Cavern Wall of Fame was created. It covers the entire frontage of the Cavern Pub (owned by Cavern City Tours) and each of the 1801 bricks in the wall feature the name of an act, which played the Cavern. Witnessed by thousands of onlookers Gerry Marsden unveiled the Wall of Fame, and then Billy J. Today only established, high profile artists receive the privilege of being inducted into the Cavern Wall of Fame.

Derek St. Holmes (Ted Nugent) and Brad Whitford (Aerosmith) carve out some time during pre-tour rehearsals at Nashville’s SIR to talk reissued Les Paul gems, British tube-amp goodness, and the minimalist stomp stations that fuel their tried-and-true blues rock.

Derek St. Holmes—best known for singing alongside Ted Nugent—is also a bona fide gearhead. He loves to strap on guitars, especially beautiful Les Pauls like this Gibson Collector’s Choice #15 that’s based on his friend, The Kentucky Headhunters guitarist Greg Martin’s ’58 burst.

Brad Whitford is known for Les Pauls during his long tenure rocking with Aerosmith, but for this project his likes the contrast Strats bring to the group’s sound. Here is a Fender American Vintage 1965 Stratocaster.
