Alex Lifeson: The Gibson Interview

It would be so easy for a guitar player to disappear in a trio like Rush. Fronting the band is the man-siren shriek and thundering bass of Geddy Lee. Propelling things from behind is, quite possibly, the greatest rock drummer of all time, Neil Peart. So, a mere mortal might just be inclined shrivel up and play barre chords. But Alex Lifeson has always been up to the challenge. From the crashing riffs of “Working Man” and “Passage to Bangkok” to the searing leads of “Limelight” and “The Main Monkey Business,” he has always represented the cutting edge of rock guitar. Alex recently visited the Gibson Custom Factory and sat down with

Doug Doppler: interview

Nestled in the hills in a small town east of the San Francisco bay lies the house of Doug Doppler, a man so unassuming and humble and possessed of such a warm heart that it’s easy to forget that he is just about one of the greatest guitar talents in the world. Last Tuesday, April 27, my close friend, Jeff Aragaki and I had the privilege to spend the day with Doug at his house for a behind-the-scenes look into the making of his upcoming DVD series, “Get Killer Tone.”

This meeting came about because Jeff lent Doug his incredible Aracom PRX150-Pro attenuator so Doug could use it on “Get Killer Tone” (I’ll have a video regarding this coming soon). Doug has since purchased the unit because in his words, “It’s saving my ears!” And taking advantage of Jeff’s relationship with him, I threw out the idea of getting a behind-the-scenes look at Doug’s process of creating the series; something Doug excitedly agreed to, much to my delight.

Torben Enevoldsen: Section A - Sacrifice

01. Sacrifice
02. Room With A View
03. Lionheart
04. Land Of The Desert Sun
05. Concealed In Lies
06. Intoxicated
07. Heroes
08. Days Of Sorrow
09. Danger
10. The City Is Falling

Andy Engberg : Vocals
Torben Enevoldsen : Guitars, Bass & Keyboards
Thomas Heintzelmann : Drums

Section A return after an absence of 4 years with their third album “Sacrifice”. Led by the rich vocals of Andy Engberg and the virtuoso guitar work of Torben Enevoldsen (Acacia Avenue, Fatal Force) the band is completed by new drummer Thomas Heintzelmann (Decoy) for the pounding 10 tracks of the new album.

“Sacrifice” marks a heavier and more direct approach from Section A with a more streamlined song orientated approach than its two predecessors “The Seventh Sign” (2003) and “Parallel Lives” (2006). The progressive elements of its predecessors are used more sparingly this time round and lyrically there is no concept to follow yet the album does tread the a similar ground in lyric subject matter.

On the music’s direction Torben Enevoldsen comments, “Musically, this album is a bit heavier and straighter forward than our previous efforts. The songs are perhaps also a bit faster and more energetic. It’s however basically still a blend of very melodic hard rock and metal, with a slight touch of Prog. The initial writing actually began right after the release of “Parallel Lives”, back in 2006. The writing and recording sessions then went on and off during 2007 and 2008, until the album was finally completed in September of 2009. I did most of the recordings here in my own studio in Copenhagen, but Andy’s vocals were recorded at Stonetower Studios in Stockholm”.

On the bands new drummer Torben proudly states, “I think that our new drummer, Thomas Heintzelmann, has opened new doors to the band technically. His double bass drumming is very fast and tight, and that enabled us to utilize this in our new songs. As a result, a song like “Land Of The Desert Sun” became just the way I wanted it. Very tight, fast and heavy”.

Continuing the bands tradition of having a first rate keyboardist come in an play solos “Sacrifice” is no exception with Lasse Finbråten of Circus Maximus adding his distinctive style and creating a nice collection of solo trade offs with Enevoldsen.

“Sacrifice” sees Section A back in full metal mode for their new album and is sure to appeal to long-term fans of the band as well as win over a new audience.

full details

Guitar Player’s 2010 Guitar Superstar
Guitar Player magazine's 2010 Guitar Superstar competition is open to electric and acoustic guitar players of all styles who believe they have what it takes to earn the title of "Guitar Superstar."

This is the fifth year Guitar Player has hosted this instrumental-guitar competition. Each year, ten finalists are chosen by the editors of Guitar Player to fight it out in front of a panel of celebrity judges. Past judges have included Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, George Lynch, Steve Lukather, Nuno Bettencourt, Elliot Easton, Greg Howe, Jennifer Batten, and Richie Kotzen. Past hosts of the big event include Andy Summers, Greg Kihn, and Brendan Small (creator of Metalocalypse).

The 2010 Guitar Player’s Guitar Superstar competition will be held September 18, 2010 at the Bankhead Theater in Livermore, California. The 2009 winner and current champion is Steve Senes. Who will be the 2010 Guitar Superstar?

New for 2010!

Video Submissions: All entries must be videos of a guitarist performing an original instrumental work no more than five minutes long. No covers. No singing. No 20-minute prog-rock epics. Both solo and full-band performances are permitted. Entries limited to players living in the domestic United States who are at least 18 years of age.

People’s Choice Finalist: This year, the GP staff will select nine finalists. The tenth contender will be chosen by the public! The video that logs the highest number of votes before the entry period closes on June 30, 2010 at 12:59 pm will instantly win that player a spot in the competition.

Goodies: All finalists are provided airfare and two nights lodging in an event hotel. The 2010 Guitar Superstar will win gear packages from various guitar manufacturers, a feature story in Guitar Player, and an album contract with Guitar Player Records (distributed by MI5/EMI).

Carl Verheyen: The Case for Owning Guitars

Carl Verheyen:
Much has been said about the pros and cons for owning multiple guitars. Some even call it a disease and label it "Guitar Acquisition Syndrome" But I’m a firm believer in the instrument’s innate ability to inspire and as opposed to collecting guitars, I have always aimed at owning a good example of every important guitar made.

Part of this philosophy stems from my past life as a studio musician here in L.A. Producers, film composers, songwriters and arrangers became very knowledgeable about the types of guitars we were playing and many times producers would ask for a specific instrument. Questions like “Can you play that on a Les Paul” Or “Do you own any Gretches” were quite common for me, so I sought out the best possible example I could afford of each important guitar over the years. full post
