George Lynch: Tiger Mofo Fossil guitar

GEORGE Lynch to be one of the greatest guitar slingers to come out of the L.A. metal scene of the 1980s, with great tone, cool note choices, a sweeping vibrato, and massive chops. No, he had to crank out his brand of shred on impossibly coollooking guitars, with tiger stripes, kamikaze pilots, and skulls and bones. Well apparently, even those guitars weren’t bitchin’ enough for Lynch, because he is currently creating custom guitars out of a shop at ESP—the company with which he has been associated for many years. “I get my wood and some parts and assistance from them,” says Lynch. “Some of my guitars I build off an ESP platform, such as modified Tigers or Super V’s. Others we start with a blank piece of wood and mill the necks to my specs. It all depends on what that particular customer wants.” Once Lynch gets the parts selected, he sets about carving, burning, distressing, and awesomifying them into his own custom line of Mr. Scary Guitars. Now you can get some for yourself, including the Tiger Mofo Fossil you see here, provided you’re patient—build times range from one to three months— and fairly well heeled. more

Jeff Bowders The Pilgrimage Of Thingamuhjig (CD)

Thingamuhjig, the protagonist of drummer Jeff Bowders' new concept album The Pilgrimage Of Thingamuhjig, finds himself on the same temptation-strewn path first mapped out by John Bunyan in the 1678 classic "Pilgrim's Progress." Unlike the journey of Bunyan's hero Christian, however, Thingamuhjig's quest for ultimate truth is accompanied by a fiercely melodic and rhythmically explosive soundtrack, one centered around Bowders' head-spinning drumming and the solo contributions of some true guitar heroes. "Thingamuhjig's quest is a sincere search for truth that I feel most people contemplate at some point in their lives," Bowders says. "Thingamuhjig represents the individual who wants to know and understand their purpose in life and to live a life at its highest and most honorable level, regardless of what the consequences may be." This is the first solo effort from Bowders, whose nimble footwork and pounding progressive grooves have powered Mr. Big/Racer X guitarist Paul Gilbert through three albums and numerous world tours. Bowders says that the all-instrumental format of the album allows him to pay homage to many early influences. "Ever since I heard Tony Macalpine's 'Maximum Security' album I've been addicted to rock instrumental music." he says. "Then I heard Gregg Bissonnette's first solo album, which really displayed how dynamic and effective the drum performances can be to the overall song; it just planted the seed to one day do one of my own."

Benjamin Woods,Marc Rizzo,Steve Stevens,Glen Drover: Flametal new release packed with cool guitar goodness

Benjamin Woods:
"I wanted the Heavy Mellow album to be publicised much more than it was, which was disappointing. But hey, whatever, shit happens. I actually have the new Flametal album, Vision, all completed, which should be available by by this summer. This album has awesome guest appearances from some of my favorite artists such as Marc Rizzo (SOULFLY), Steve Stevens (BILLY IDOL), Glen Drover (ex-MEGADETH), Sean Reinert (DEATH) and more. This album is a 'game changer' and defines a new genre. I couldn't be more happy with it. Flametal will continue to play our live shows in more and more places with myself, Thomas Perry, Brian Spalding and Angeline Saris." more

Mark McGuigan: Tom Quayle, Rick Graham masterclass review

f you are a fan of modern electric guitar then I’m sure Tom Quayle and Rick Graham will need no introduction.
Last year Tom and Rick hosted a very popular and successful three day masterclass. At the time I wasn’t able to attend so when I saw that another masterclass was being held on April 16th I jumped at the chance and got myself a ticket!

The masterclass was held at The Barn in the quiet and leafy setting of Calverley near Leeds and hosted in conjuction with renowned Leeds guitar teacher Jonathon Vipond.
The masterclass attracted a good turnout, around twenty odd people. We’d travelled from all over, eager to glean some golden nuggets of guitar genius from two class players and, I must say, it was also great to see plenty of Suhr headstocks on show

Jonathon, Tom and Rick greeted us warmly as we got settled and took our seats. We were also provided with pre-prepared handouts and tablature for the upcoming lesson topics. more

Tony MacAlpine: tour planning?

Tony MacAlpine The album is off to mastering!... it's a solo instrumental guitar album... It's out June 21. Pre-order in May. I'll be giving away the first two tracks from the album free next week!
Hey guys, so a lot of you are asking that I come to certain cities and countries where you are. Can I get a roll call of where you're calling in from? As you probably know, an artist doesn't always have much control over where they play (it always comes down to local promoters) - but I want to do my best! To make it easy to read, just reply with your city and country (or the major city near you).

Jonas Tamas, Mattias IA Eklundh: IA added to all star line-up for new album

"Swedish guitar virtuoso Mattias IA Eklundh plays a fantastic guest guitar solo on Jonas Tamas' second solo album Timeless Hour. Mattias, one of the most interesting and unique guitar players of the planet, appears in the opening section of the song Debate.

Mattias IA Eklundh is an amazing guitarist, known for his work with the bands Freak Kitchen (he is the singer of the band, too), Frozen Eyes, Fate, The Jonas Hellborg Trio, and Art Metal. Outside of Freak Kitchen, Eklundh has recorded several solo albums, and made appearances as a guest musician for Swedish heavy metal bands like Evergrey and Soilwork. His two Freak Guitar solo albums are released on Steve Vai's Favored Nations label. He also annually hosts and teaches at the Freak Guitar Camp.

The upcoming second instrumental guitar album of Jonas Tamas will feature international guitar stars as guest players, including Mattias IA Eklundh (Freak Kitchen), Brett Garsed (Planet X, etc.), Marcel Coenen (Sun Caged), Thorsten Koehne (Eden's Curse), and the new keyboard wizard Sergey Boykov (Shadow Cry)."
