Jim Root: Terror Head awarded the Amplifier Of The Year!

Orange Amplifications first signature amp in over forty years, the Signature #4 Jim Root Terror Head, has just been awarded the Amplifier Of The Year Award, sponsored by Total Guitar, at the MIA Awards held on the 22nd November 2012 at the Emirates Stadium in London.

Launched to rave reviews at the 2012 Winter NAMM, the Signature #4 Jim Root Terror Head went on to win the Guitar World Gold Award for performance and achieve the joint highest review score in iGuitar magazine. The Total Guitar: Amplifier Of The Year Award, judged by a public vote through Future Publishing’s MusicRadar website, is the crowning glory for a very successful year for this extremely impressive amp.

The Signature #4 Jim Root Terror Head is a combination of Orange Amps technology with Jim’s love of the ‘pics only’ amps and his wish for it to be affordable. Everyone at Orange is very proud to have received this prestigious award and to have worked closely with Jim on this special amplifier.

Dave Weiner: Collection of Short Stories: Vol. 1 CD

A Collection of Short Stories: Vol. 1 -  is the first installment from Dave’s raw, unaccompanied instrumental acoustic series. “I wanted the listener to feel as if I was playing the guitar for them", Dave says, "like they were right there in the room with me. The movement on the strings, the breathing. The wood of the guitar is speaking, and it’s all captured in its beautiful natural form."

Dave Weiner and Steve Vai - Photo Lucas Carpenter
For the last 13 years, the only constant in Steve Vai’s touring career has been guitarist, Dave Weiner. Fresh out of college in Pennsylvania, Dave moved to Los Angeles in 1998 to attend Musician’s Institute: Guitar Institute of Technology. “No matter how many years of schooling I went through, after it was over, I always said I was heading to LA to go to GIT”, Dave explains. “Since I was 10 years old, I knew guitar was my calling… and school in sunny LA where I play guitar all day sounds like a great place to get something started.” The first day of school, Dave found MI’s job board and faxed in his resume to a local management company looking for interns. That night, Dave received a call from a woman named Ruta Sepetys. "It was a name that I recognized, but didn’t know where from. We chatted and she eventually named her clients, the last of which was Mr. Steve Vai." Once Dave met Mr. Vai during his intern experience with Ruta, Dave submitted his demo he had been working on during MI. Weeks after turning in his demo, the phone rings. "I really liked your demo. You can obviously play.", said Mr. Vai. "I’m about to start rehearsals for a world tour, I could use another guitar player. Would you like to join the band?” Dave Weiner has been recording and rocking on tour with Mr. Steve Vai ever since.

Dave Weiner is opening for Mr. Vai's Story of Light tour to support his new record, "A Collection of Short Stories: Vol. 1." The world tour has already begun and will continue on til late 2012. For tour dates, visit vai.com

Per Nilsson: Zierler Projects progressive metal super group

After 6 years of absolute silence, Beyond Twilight mastermind Finn Zierler has returned from the shadows with Zierler Projects.

Zierler Projects is a progressive metal super group consisting of :

Finn Zierler – Keyboards (Beyond Twilight)
Bobby Jarzombek – Drums (Rob Halford, Fates Warning, Arch/Matheos, Sebastian Bach, Iced Earth)
Per Nilsson – Guitars and Bass (Scar Symmetry, Kaipa)
Kelly Sundown Carpenter – Vocals (Beyond Twilight, Darkology, Epysode, Outworld)
Truls Haugen – Vocals and Bass live (Insense, Circus Maximus).

Zierler said, “I’ve had the idea in mind for some time now. All the guys in the matrix are amongst my personal favourites and have been it for years. As with any “supergroup”, bringing together the best talent doesn’t mean things will work out – however in this case it did. It’s an absolute pleasure to work with each one of these great musicians – on every level.”

Zierler describes the music-
“It’s a journey through my musical moods, sometimes brutal, nightmarishly technical, crushingly dark and very progressive. The performances on this album are simply inhuman, just a smashing and fantastic job by everyone involved.”

Ron Thal: Bumblefoot and Tony Harnell of TNT pledge music acoustic EP project

Acoustic/Electric EP http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/tonyharnell
Pledge here to experience the making of my new EP! You'll be involved every step of the way & also help a charity:)

Welcome everyone! Thanks for joining me here on PledgeMusic. I’ve invited you here or you have happened upon this page as a friend, fan, and/or music lover, and are most likely aware of the current state of the music industry. As you may or may not know I’ve recorded recent projects with traditional record labels over the past several years and have not been happy with the results. I haven’t felt that my music has really reached you, my fans, in the the way I intended it to. It’s either been marketed to the wrong audience or not really marketed much at all. After working hard to always deliver you the best songs and productions possible, it’s frustrating to find that the music doesn’t reach you the way I’d like it to.

In the past few years, I have been performing a lot here in the New York City area with my various acoustic line ups starting in 2008 with some of my indie rock friends. That inspired the CD Tony Harnell & The Mercury Train which was released in 2010, a stripped down retrospective of my catalog. After that release, we performed several shows under that moniker and then I decided to strip it down even more and performed several shows with just my talented, eclectic guitarist Jason Hagen and my beautifully talented wife Amy. This was the line up for about a year until I met the amazing electric violinist and Greek goddess, Cassandra Sotos at the NAMM show in Jan 2012. This was now the line up that would perform the next few shows together until August of this year when my buddy Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal from Guns N’ Roses came down to watch our show and jump up for a song. After the show, I asked Ron if he’d be up for joining my little band and working on our new EP and to my amazement, he says yes, claiming it was the best acoustic show he’s ever seen! We’re super excited to have Ron come on board and look forward to creating this magical little slice of music for you and for which several incredible songs are already written! Also, we have a video production company (who made Muse’s “Uprising” video) slated to shoot a video for the first single from the EP.

PledgeMusic makes it possible for me to not only release my music directly to you, but also to involve you and engage you in the process of making my new EP. Your pledges will directly account for the manufacturing, promotion and pay for the musicians on this EP.

How to pledge –
1) Pick one of the exclusives on the right-hand side of this page (scroll over the item and click on the green ‘pledge’ button that appears)

2) You provide your credit card/PayPal details (which are stored securely by PledgeMusic) on the next page, pick the appropriate place to ship to and hit the ‘pledge’ button

3) You’ll receive updates from us as we make the EP (such as videos, streams/downloads of new songs, pictures and more). You can share these on Facebook/Twitter to let your friends know what we’re up to

4) If we reach the target, you are charged for the amount pledged; if we don’t, you are not charged at all (please note: you can also pledge via Paypal and your pledge will be taken immediately and refunded if the 100% target is not reached)

5) The new EP is released and you receive your exclusives!
Myself, Ron and the gang will be posting video, mp3, photo, and blog updates that keep you up to snuff along the way. Action from the studio, clips from the rehearsals or gigs, songs in demo form, and of course my verbal rants of the day… you’ll see the life of Tony Harnell and company for the next several months until the completion of the EP!

In reward for your faith and kindness through your pledges, I will deliver the digital download of the EP to you BEFORE it is released. Of course, you’ll receive any physical items I might need to ship you, too…but the fun doesn’t stop there!

Beyond all of this goodness lies the greater good, as a portion of the proceeds raised will be donated to Metavivor-Metistatic Breast Cancer Research. I am all too familiar with the this disease having lost my dear mother to it in 2009 and being diagnosed myself with thyroid cancer in the same year. Some of you may have read the story about all this? Well, luckily for me I am a survivor and have beat it. With my new lease on life comes an obligation to do whatever I can to raise awareness and funding for the efforts to eradicate this horrific disease.

I look forward to sharing this new experience with you!

Rick Marcel: new "ferrofluid" Liquid Pickups!!

Mike Adair - Ferro-Kings Liquid Pickups:
Liquid Pickups utilize a nanotechnology product called "ferrofluid". Developed in the 60's by NASA, ferrofluid is gaining in popularity and starting to be utilized in many different fields.

We use it in conjunction with a magnetic transducer which produces signals to allow an electric or acoustic guitar to be amplified. The ferrofluid has nanoparticles of iron which make it a liquid magnet. When used in our design, it allows the pickup to be a "liquid diaphragm" or fluid microphone. This allows us to capture more vibrations and resonances coming from the instrument.
The full set of single coils.
This was a totally impromptu test of our Liquid Pickups by Rick Marcel (Guitar player extraordinaire).

Rick was at Robert Hampton's shop yesterday when I dropped by. Robert (Dr. of Guitar) is our main technician consultant in the development of our Liquid Pickups.

The versions here are 3rd Generation with the fluid chambers incorporated inside the pickup bobbin. Rick liked them so much we are installing protos in two of his Strats and one of his Telecasters.
Rich is our latest tester/endorser and will be working with us to bring Liquid Pickups and Fluid Sound Technology to the World.

General info:

- Standard 1999 Fender American Strat with stock electronics except for Liquid Pickups (Generation 3).
- Direct in to a Fender Blues Junior with no effects or processors. Recorded on an IPad with sound and video captured live and unedited.

This version is a modified single coil using neodymium magnets. All of our pickups use "ferrofluid" to improve the response of the transducer. (All prototypes made entirely by Ferro-Kings).
With a guitar, especially an electric guitar, it's all about vibration and resonance. The ferrofluid ends up making the pickup a "liquid diaphragm" or fluid microphone. This allows the pickup to capture vibrations and resonances that are there but not always transferred in modern and vintage pickup design.

Jack Daniels Old No.7 Whiskey Barrel tops
Ferrofluid was developed in the 60's by NASA for use in antigravity fueling experiments and is starting to gain popularity in many fields today. In the past it has been used in speaker/drivers so it is only logical for it to eventually make it's way to the beginning of the guitar signal chain.

Special Thanks to Barry & Vanessa and the folks at Ferrotec (USA) who have been our research partners and suppliers since we began our research in late 2009.
