Marco Boni: The Institute, London, announces winners of Italian Scholarships

The Institute, London, announces winners of Italian Scholarships

London’s Institute of Contemporary Music Performance is pleased to announce the winners of its inaugural Italian Scholarship programme, run together with Italian education partners Sonus Factory and Scuola di Music Cluster, and media partners Chitarre and DrumSet Magazines.

The finals were held at Scuola di Music Cluster in Milan and Sonus Factory in Rome respectively. Each finalist in guitar, bass, and drums was interviewed by a panel of judges including Pete Whittard, Institute Director, and Justin Scott, Head of Drums at the Institute, followed by a five minute live performance.

The judges were extremely impressed by the high standard of all the entries, and after long deliberation chose twenty-four year old Carlo Salaris from Accademia del Suono for the 2013 DrumSet Mag Scholarship, whilst the 2013 Chitarre Scholarship went to twenty year old, guitarist Marco Boni from L'Accademia Centro Musicale Polivalente.

These students will now relocate to the Institute’s prestigious London campus for 10 weeks to attend an intensive performance course. The scholarship also includes flights to and from London and accommodation.

Drum Scholarship winner Carlo, expressed his excitement on being granted the award: “I can't even believe that it really happened to me! This is a great privilege and I can't wait to do my best. I'm sure the experience will increase my passion!”

The Institute would like to thank all involved in supporting the scholarship programme; in particular Sonus Factory, Scuola di Music Cluster, L’Accademia Chitarre and Drum Set Mag.

Allan Holdsworth: Strandberg guitars - the story of 36

Allan Holdsworth: checking out the Strandberg
Fast forward to October 2012, when he played Uppsala International Guitar Festival, and I had a chance to meet him again in my hometown. He has just come from a gig in Oslo, where he had been exposed to True Temperament by a journalist who interviewed him there. Luckily, I still had #26, which I brought along with #35, my Varberg Tremolo demo guitar. He enjoyed the sound, weight and feel of both guitars very much, but the stumbling block was the clearance between the E-strings and the edge of the fretboard, which was too small on both guitars.

Allan Holdsworth with Ola Strandberg
He also commented that he liked the tremolo construction. Many conventional tremolos have a tendency to not return exactly to the neutral position when released. The Steinberger construction with a single pressure spring does suffer from this, whereas my needle-bearing hinged construction with conventional pull springs is less susceptible to it.

The 36 - she's a beauty

So we agreed that I would build him a guitar that featured my patent pending EndurNeck(tm) with his preferred neck width, the True Temperament fretting system, and a Seymour Duncan 59B pickup. That was the entire design brief. I promised delivery by NAMM 2013 time, i.e. less than three months away.

Misha Mansoor: Signature Overdrive By Pro Tone Pedals

Pre-Order here: http://www.ProTonePedals.com/misha/

The Misha Mansoor Overdrive is Pro Tone's adaptation of the classic overdrive with some modern twists. Assembled by hand in the USA, Mishas pedal is based on the company's flagship overdrive, the Dead Horse, and features custom artwork from "Mister-Sam" Shearon, true hardwire bypass operation, durable construction, and the traditional volume, tone, and gain controls. In an effort to expand and improve upon its predecessor, the SHAPE (renamed to ATTACK) switch has been introduced offering a choice between the flat frequency response the Dead Horse is famous for to a more mid-range-hump tone that Misha and other modern metal players use to tighten up and add presence to their tone.

Misha Mansoor: "When I tried the ProTone Deadhorse for the first time, I was genuinely blown away. It seemed to me to be the first TS style overdrive where the primary intention was for it to be used as a modern style boost in front of a high gain amp. Even though it excels as a regular tube screamer, as a boost it just seemed to go much further than anything else I had tried. Given the opportunity to tweak the design, I thought that the option for an even tighter setting with an even more pronounced "mid hump" would be the perfect addition to round this pedal out for my uses. This is my favorite overdrive."

Misha's reputation as a guitarist, producer, and recording artist grew as a result of posting demos to several online forums under the pseudonym, "Bulb." Although Mansoor produced the self-titled Animals As Leaders debut album, Veil Of Maya's Eclipse, and Stray From The Path's Make Your Own History, he is best known for his work in the progressive metal band, Periphery.
Since 2008, Periphery has toured extensively sharing the stage with artists such as TesseracT, Between The Buried And Me, and Dream Theater. In 2010 the band released a music video for "Icarus Lives!" alongside their self-titled debut album. Periphery most recently wrapped up a tour with Deftones in support of their 2012 release, Periphery II: This Time It's Personal.
