Jimmy Herring, Wayne Krantz, Michael Landau, Keith Carlock,Gary Novak: The Ringers - January / February US tour dates 2014

Tour Hits Florida, Nashville, Atlanta, DC, Philly, NY and more…
Playing Sunshine Music Festival in addition to several shows with Jamband Legends - moe.

(Los Angeles, CA) One of the most talented groups of musicians currently playing together -
THE RINGERS, featuring Jimmy Herring, Wayne Krantz, Michael Landau, Keith Carlock and Etienne Mbappe, first debuted in early 2013 for a very exclusive tour on the east coast.  The tour proved quite fulfilling for the iconic five-some, bringing together their varied backgrounds of Rock, Funk, Jazz, Blues and African styles.

Now, this group of super-talent will once again hit the road; celebrating the New Year with a U.S. tour.  Starting on January 18thThe Ringers will make two special appearances at the Sunshine Music & Blues Festivals in Florida and among other performances, will join American jam-band, moe, as Special Guests on a select number of dates (see below for itinerary details).  On all other dates, support for shows will be Oli Brown, who will be in the studio with Anders Osborne this February.  In addition, the band has also announced that it will allow audiences to record the live show as long as the venue permits.

The Ringers line-up will temporarily alter this time around as drummer, Keith Carlock, will be staying close to home, with his expectant wife.  Dynamic musician, drummer, Gary Novak, will take his place for these tour dates.

The original concept behind The Ringers was to bring five guys together, not to just perform as a super-group, but to work “as a unifying artistic force, one where people put music ahead of their egos to collectively create great music.”   These five veteran musicians will perform together on new Ringers material written exclusively for this band, as well as each individual’s solo material, covers tunes chosen by the players and brand new tunes each artist will debut for the live audience. The Ringers are also planning to record an album of originals, for release in 2014.

Jimmy Herring, as the founding member of The Aquarium Rescue Unit, Project Z and Jazz is Dead, in addition to playing with everyone from The Allman Brothers Band, The Grateful Dead to Phil Lesh and Friends, and Béla Fleck, has made his indelible impact on the music world. He currently serves as the lead guitarist for the very popular American Band, Widespread Panic and released his second solo album, Subject To Change Without Notice, last year.

Wayne Krantz released his tenth album, Howie 61, last year to glowing critical praise.  Krantz has played with Randy Brecker, Leni Stern and Steely Dan, among others.  Through a succession of highly lauded solo recordings, Krantz has continuously evolved as an artist - pushing himself in new and exciting directions. Revered for his forward-thinking approach to improvisation (brilliantly documented in his 2004 book An Improviser’s OS), Krantz has fearlessly branched into new areas, while consistently skirting the edges of jazz, rock and fusion.

Musician and composer, Michael Landau, is a prolific session guitarist and performer who has played on hundreds of records since the 1980s, some session highlights include:  Pink Floyd, Miles Davis, B.B. King, Ray Charles, Joni Mitchell and James Taylor. He has toured with Robben Ford, the Steve Gadd Band, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell and his own project The Michael Landau Group.  With many recordings under his name, the latest being ‘Organic Instrumentals’, his music flows intensely ranging from spooky ballads with beautiful improvisation to intense Rock ‘n’ Roll with vocals.

Bass player, Etienne Mbappe, is best known for his years with the Zawinul Syndicate.  In the 80’s he was the masterpiece of the jazz fusion band Ultramarine which incorporated jazz with elements of African and Caribbean influences.  He also played with Ray Charles on his last album and is currently a member of John McLaughlin’s 4th Dimension.

Gary Novak, an amazing drummer, began his career at the young age of 10, playing in his famous pianist father’s (Larry Novak) trio in Chicago.  Novak has recorded and/or toured with such musical luminaries as Chick Corea, Alanis Morrisette, Allan Holdsworth, Andrew WK, Michael McDonald, Natalie Cole, David Sanborn, George Benson and Anita Baker along with many more.

Dean DeLeo: Stone Temple Pilots at X103.9 Merry Meltdown 2 Jack Lue Series

Stone Temple Pilots at X103.9 Merry Meltdown 2 Jack Lue Series

Stone Temple Pilots (often abbreviated STP), currently known as Stone Temple Pilots with Chester Bennington, is an American rock band from San Diego, California, that currently consists of brothers Robert (bass, backing vocals) andDean DeLeo (guitar), Eric Kretz (drums, percussion), and Chester Bennington (lead vocals). Since its formation, STP's line-up had remained unchanged until the dismissal of lead vocalist Scott Weiland in 2013[2] and the subsequent addition of Bennington of Linkin Park fame as his replacement vocalist.

After forming in 1985 under the name Mighty Joe Young, the band signed with Atlantic Records and changed its name to Stone Temple Pilots. STP found immediate success in 1993 after releasing their debut album Core (1992), and went on to become one of the most commercially successful bands of the 1990s.[3] The band released four more studio albums: Purple (1994), Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop (1996), No. 4 (1999) and Shangri-La Dee Da (2001) before separating in 2003, after which the band members partook in various projects, most notably Velvet Revolver and Army of Anyone. STP eventually reconvened in 2008 for a reunion tour, released a new self-titled album in 2010, and have been actively touring since, although Weiland was fired from the band and was replaced by Bennington in 2013. The band's first material with Bennington, the EP  High Rise, was released October 8.[4]

While initially displaying a sound typically identified as grunge early on in its career, further releases from the band expressed a variety of influences, including psychedelic rock, bossa nova and classic rock. The band's evolution throughout the 1990s and early 2000s involved several tumultuous periods of commercial highs and lows, brought about in part by Weiland's well-publicized struggles with drug addiction

Tom Hess: The Secret To Playing Badass Blues Guitar Licks

The Secret To Playing Badass Blues Guitar Licks
Tom Hess
To play badass blues guitar licks, you must not only master the ability to play with TONS of power in your picking hand, but also prevent any unwanted string noise from occurring. Until you can do this effectively every time you play, you will struggle to make your licks sound as expressive as you want them to sound.

For most guitarists, unwanted string noise frequently occurs while playing blues licks and using wide vibrato, double stops or extra power in the picking hand. You must master the ability to play cleanly while using these techniques, otherwise your blues guitar playing will never sound as self-expressive as you want it to.
For the rest of this article you will be taken through the exact steps needed for cleaning up unwanted string noise in your blues guitar licks. WARNING: You must watch the blues guitar licks video below to hear exactly what it sounds like when blues licks are played with ZERO string noise. This will help you to understand when you are using the ideas below correctly.

After you’ve finished the video above, pick up your guitar and begin following these steps to make your blues guitar licks intense and clean at the same time.
Step One: Quickly create a new blues guitar lick containing a maximum of 2-3 notes. To give you some ideas to get started with, look at the examples below:

Example 1

Example 2

Example 3
It is crucial that you do NOT make your guitar phrases any longer than three notes (max). By only using a few notes, you will be forced to think creatively and get the most musical expression possible from each note. This is also important because it will help you focus on using proper muting technique to keep your phrases clean. Also observe how I did not notate the rhythm in the examples I provided for you. You are free to think creatively about the rhythms you use while playing these examples. Additionally, don't play all of these licks at once, choose ONE and practice it many times until it becomes second nature. Also, make sure that the last note of every lick you play ends with an upstroke (this is important for the next step).
Step Two: After using an upstroke on the last note of your lick, rest the pick on the string directly below the string you were playing on (as I demonstrated in the video above). While doing this, do NOT bring your pick up and ‘away’ from the strings. To avoid this, rest your hand on the strings using either palm muting or thumb muting in your picking hand (I highly recommend you use thumb muting in the same way it is used in the video demonstration). Take several minutes to practice this.
Step Three: Next, use any finger that is not holding the pick to mute the higher strings while playing the lick (including available fingers on the fretting hand and picking hand). If you are uncertain about how this is done, check out this article on eliminating excess guitar string noise. Again, work on this for a few minutes before moving on to the next step.
Step Four: With your picking hand, play your blues lick with as much intensity as possible by doing the following:

  • Use very heavy vibrato to emphasize any sustained notes in your lick.

  • While playing double stops, use heavy vibrato on both strings simultaneously.

  • Pick the strings with as much force as possible (don’t worry about breaking the strings).
As you play your guitar lick with a lot of intensity you will quickly understand the importance of the muting techniques you learned in the previous steps. If you are still having issues with unwanted string noise, return to the previous steps to fix the problem. As you are going through this process, don’t feel frustrated if you are unable to quickly play without creating unintentional string noise. By being patient and practicing you will master this and greatly enhance your lead guitar playing.
Step Five: Create several additional blues guitar licks or use the alternate examples I provided above and take them through the previous steps to make them as clean and intense as possible.
After you’ve mastered each of the concepts in the five steps above, it’s time to start creating many more awesome guitar licks. Learn how to come up with an endless supply of highly creative licks by checking out this video on the topic of how to play rock guitar licks.
Add even more aggressiveness to your guitar licks by studying the ideas in this video containing exercises to help you increase guitar speed.
