Lee Ritenour video on the 2014 Six String Theory Competition

The goal of the competition is to provide aspiring musicians with professional performing and recording opportunities, educational scholarships, mentoring and prizes. Highlights include: the 4 grand prize winners (one in each instrument) will perform at a venue at the 2014 Montreux Jazz Festival as well as the SST guitar grand prize winner to perform with Lee Ritenour and other guitar legends at the “Legends of Guitar” concert at Montreux, to be filmed in HD. Other prizes included are 4 Berklee College of Music scholarships, Guitar finalist to record on Ritenour’s forthcoming 2014 Concord album, Yamaha Instruments & Endorsements, Professional Mentoring with Lee Ritenour, Crown of the Continent Guitar Workshop Scholarships & Performing Opportunities plus more.

The Six String Theory Competition is the inspiration of Ritenour, who debuted the International Competition in 2010 with the release of his all-star guitar CD, “6 String Theory.” The contest was a great success and the guitar winner recorded a track on Ritenour’s “6 String Theory” and won a 4 year scholarship to Berklee College of Music, Yamaha endorsement & guitar plus many other prizes and performance opportunities. In the second year, the guitar contest continued to grow in popularity and scope, so by 2012, the contest opened to 3 new instruments: Piano, Bass and Drums. This expanded the pool bringing a wonderfully diverse range of players to the competition and giving them incredible professional exposure. For example, the three 2012 rhythm player winners recorded a track on Lee Ritenour’s 2012 Concord Records release “Rhythm Sessions” starring musicians Chick Corea, George Duke, Stanley Clarke, Patrice Rushen and more. The guitar winner is currently attending Berklee College of Music on a full, four year scholarship.

Advisory Board Judges will work with Lee Ritenour to evaluate and determine the 4 winners. Those judges include Academy® award-winning Dave Grusin, John Patitucci, Dave Weckl, Harvey Mason, Patrice Rushen, John Beasley, Sonny Emory, Will Kennedy, Daniel Jobim, Alan Pasqua, Melvin Lee Davis, Tom Kennedy, Nathan East, Simon Phillips, Chris Coleman and Gary Novak.

Rodrigo Sanchez,Gabriela Quintero: Rodrigo y Gabriela - 9 Dead Alive

9 Dead Alive will be released worldwide on 28th April 2014. The album was recorded and produced by Rod & Gab at their studio in Ixtapa, Mexico. Mixing was handled by Andrew Scheps (Black Sabbath, Adele, Metallica, Lana Del Rey) in Los Angeles. ’9 Dead Alive’ sees Rodrigo y Gabriela playing face to face, guitar versus guitar, bursting with melodic energy and rhythmic invention.

Each of the songs on the album is a personal celebration of individuals who have passed on, but through their deeds and words still resonate in the 21st century. Going as far back as Eleanor of Acquitaine (1122 – 1204) to Viktor Frankl (1905 – 1997), and including a tribute to one of Rod & Gab’s enduring touchstones – animals and nature. This diverse and fascinating list will strike a chord with anyone familiar with the duo’s passion for human rights, literature, history and philosophy.

Institute partners with musical legends to launch eight scholarships

At the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance in London the focus is on accessibility to all, no matter what their circumstances. The modern music school, which is well known for its successful alumni including Daughter, Denai Moore and Arni Arnasson of The Vaccines, has once again launched the scholarship awards for its renowned Higher Diploma. The award offers the successful entrants fully funded places (worth £5950 for UK based students and £7200 for international students) on the one-year intensive course for musicians, which is specially designed to fast-track students' development and encourage them to discover their creative potential.

And this year the Institute is delighted to announce that legendary cymbal company Zildjian is joining its roster of outstanding sponsors who support the Institute’s Higher Diploma scholarships. For the first time there will be two scholarships in each discipline; one for UK applications and another for international candidates. The scholarship categories are as follows:

-
DRUMS: Supported by Zildjian and Drummer Magazine
-
GUITAR: Supported by Total Guitar Magazine and manufacturer (to be announced)
-
BASS: Supported by Ernie Ball Musicman Bass and Bass Guitar Magazine
-
VOCALS: Supported by Shure

In order to apply for this great opportunity, entrants must complete an application form and submit a video of them performing. The finalists will be chosen by judges at the Institute who will then attend an interview and the live final before the winners are announced.

Closing date for entries is 10th March 2014. The scholarships are open to anyone from the UK or internationally. All entry criteria and the application form are available from www.icmp.co.uk/scholarships
