John McLaughlin: To the One in the year of his 70th birthday

John McLaughlin: Still smoking the opposition

(Los Angeles, CA) – It has been nearly two years since world-renowned guitarist John McLaughlin released To the One, his highly acclaimed, first studio recording, with The 4th Dimension.  The veteran guitar aficionado celebrates his 70th birthday year with the announcement of Now Here This (Abstract Logix) set for release on October 16th as he ups-the-ante even further with greater fire, finesse and freewheeling interplay.

McLaughlin’s musical influences carry over to many of the musical elite also declaring him to be “the best guitarist alive,” as Jeff Beck mused in 2010. In 2003, McLaughlin was ranked 49th in Rolling Stone magazine list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" and in the summer of 2007, McLaughlin performed at Eric Clapton’s Crossroad Guitar Festival in Bridgeview, Illinois.   Chick Corea remarked to DownBeat Magazine that “…what John McLaughlin did with the electric guitar set the world on its ear.  No one ever heard an electric guitar played like that before, and it certainly inspired me. John's band, more than my experience with Miles, led me to want to turn the volume up and write music that was more dramatic and made your hair stand on end."

McLaughlin’s latest creative venture with The 4th Dimension reflects a slight, yet significant, alteration of the dynamic, specifically the recruitment of powerhouse Indian drummer Ranjit Barot.  Cameroon-born/Paris-resident bassist Etienne M'Bappe is back from To the One, as is keyboardist/drummer Gary Husband. This 8-track set of McLaughlin originals, recorded at Studio 26 in Antibes, France, testifies to the guitarist's decades-long fascination with Indian music, through his effortless virtuosity, and relentless lyricism, even when the guitarist is shredding at near-light speed.   As John himself simply states, “Now Here This is the culmination of my life's work till now.”

The critical praise for McLaughlin’s previous musical venture cascaded forth immediately; John Fordham of The Guardian declared, "…this tight 40-minute document hums with a collaborative energy."  There is little doubt that McLaughlin's return to the electrified fusion he first innovated more than 40 years ago in groups led by trumpet icon Miles Davis and drum legend Tony Williams - and, of course, with his own earth-shattering Mahavishnu Orchestra - is as electrifying and exhilarating as ever. And for those new to the genre, Now Here This is the perfect introduction - one that will surely encourage them to also dive, head-first, into this legendary guitarist's lengthy and ground breaking discography.

Jimmy Herring: tour dates

new album

(Los Angeles, CA) –JIMMY HERRING, one of the most sought after American guitarists today, has set the release date of August 21 for his second solo album, Subject To Change Without Notice, through Abstract Logix Records.  As the founding member of The Aquarium Rescue Unit, Project Z and Jazz is Dead, in addition to playing with everyone from The Allman Brothers Band, The Grateful Dead to Phil Lesh and Friends, and Bela Fleck, HERRING has made his indelible impact on the music world. He currently serves as the lead guitarist for the very popular American Band, Widespread Panic.

Prior to releasing his first solo outing, Lifeboat, HERRING was known for his limitless improvisations, long flowing phrases, and highly charged, yet soulful, lead guitar that drew high praises from a diverse set within the musician community including Chick Corea, John McLaughlin to Dweezil Zappa. Throughout his early career, he plied his skills in multiple musical contexts, ranging from classically song-driven rock to technically demanding jazz fusion.

Now, with the release of his second album, Subject To Change Without Notice, HERRING has compiled eight original songs highlighted by the addition of amazing covers, including the Mahavishnu Orchestra’s “Hope”, George Harrison’s “Within You Without You” and Jimmy McGriff’s “Miss Poopie”.  As one of the industry’s top-tier performance and recording guitarists, HERRING has once again illuminated the art form that transcends any categorization.

With HERRING on lead guitar, the album also features such top notch musicians as Neal Fountain, Etienne Mbappe (Bass), Jeff Sipe, Tyler Greenwell (Drums), Matt Slocum (Piano/Keys).  In addition, making special guest appearances on the album are Bela Fleck (Banjo), and Bill Evans (Sax) and Nicky Sanders (Violin) from the Steep Canyon Rangers.

Wayne Krantz: Guitar Player interview

What about the title track? Is there a direct connection to Dylan’s “Highway 61 Revisited”?
There actually is. It’s an example of starting with a title—in this case a play on words that I thought was funny. Instead of saying “Highway 61,” which has the historical weight of both the Americana and Dylan things, switching it to “Howie 61” made it ridiculous. The wordiness of the song is also kind of a reference to Dylan, and the song’s form—which is basically a weird, expanded blues—is based on the structure of a Dylan tune. As far as the album title, I was going to call it something else, but Howie 61 was kind of funny and easy to remember, so I decided to use it. And I had no idea that that song was going to open the album when I wrote it, but I like that it provides a soft opening and just kind of eases the listener in.

The Commander-In-Chief: number on fan announced

The Commander-In-Chief

It is time to answer a question I am being asked a LOT: "how did you and your manager meet?" Well, she is my fulltime manager, PR agent, Booking agent, Singing teacher (She was trained as a professional opera singer in Italy), mentor and so much more. Those of you who did not know it already have probably figured out by now that only a MOTHER would do all that for an unsigned artist for four years

:) She was not happy when I announced my decision to play guitar and that my genre was metal. She was very concerned about me going into a totally male dominated genre as the first female solo artist, but after two years she saw how serious I was and we agreed to team up and go for this 100%. We had no contacts in the Metal world and no money, but we decided to do this, no matter how much we would have to sacrifice. The rest is history
