Ola Strandberg: talks to Seymour Duncan about his innovative guitars

How does your personal taste in music influence your designs?
Not so much, but the reverse is definitely true. I have expanded my musical tastes considerably from working with my customers. Having said that, I thought I was building a jazz/fusion guitar, but due to early adoption by Extended Range players like Chris Letchford (Scale the Summit), who was my first ever made-to-measure customer and who now has a recently announced signature model in the works, Tosin Abasi (Animals as Leaders) and Misha Mansoor (Periphery), the Extended Range segment is where it really took off. I had never listened to that type of music before when I met either of them, but was completely blown away. After receiving my first e-mail from Tosin, having never heard of him, I listened to Animals as Leaders on repeat for a whole day!

Recently getting Allan Holdsworth as a customer and having him record several songs on his new album with his [custom Seymour Duncan 59B equipped] .strandberg* guitar does bring the whole thing home though. It was really with a player like him in mind that it all started but I could not in my wildest dreams think that it would happen. Another headless guitar pioneer, Paul Masvidal (Cynic), recently joined the team of .strandberg* artists and we are bringing out a signature model for him, which is very exciting and totally in line with my personal tastes.

The feedback I receive from my customers and people who try the guitars is a continuous learning experience and an incredible kick. Coming up with well sounding 7- and 8-string guitars, where “well sounding” is to a large extent defined by the djent/technical metal genre, has evolved into a set of rules for material and pickup selection, where I guess personal taste is an element. This continues with many of my 6-string players, like Al Mu’min (the HAARP Machine), playing in drop tunings where similar rules apply.

Dreamfullofzen: do I dream in Dorian?

MIGHTY DORIAN JAM
Title comes from the fact that the music is inspired from the intro music from the movie "The mighty Ducks". This is the second time I've been inspired by the music and composed something, first one ended up being the tune "Trust in me".
Dorian mode or Doric mode can refer to three very different but interrelated subjects: one of the Ancient Greek harmoniai (characteristic melodic behaviour, or the scale structure associated with it), one of the medieval musical modes, or one of the modern modal diatonic scales  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorian_mode

I played this song using the DigiTech Whammy pedal for the arpeggiate/melody, and overdubbed the harmony parts with the E-Bow for (0:48~). I played with 9 finger style (4 with left hand and 5 with right) on the arpeggiate part. The way Reb Beach moves to the other strings while he is tapping gave me a hint to develop this technique. If that music had not required that technique, I would have never used it. It was very enjoyable to play, I really like this prelude. Hope you guys like my version as much as I like playing it.

Pre-Order and more info: http://shop.textalk.se/en/article.php?id=8412&art=17808333
It´s been quite silent lately from Reingold Records but it´s been a crazy year with The Flowerkings. We have hit on the Banks of Eden tour Europe twice, Japan and US and next weekend we´re going to Canada. I believe we have played close to 50 shows. Between shows we recorded a new album as well.
When things slow down a bit I will take time to finish up the live DVD from the RosFest gig 2012 with Karmakanic plus I´m currently working on new material as well.

Me and Nils Erikson from Karmakanic have been working on a duo project close to two years now, hopefully it will see the light of day this autumn. It´s a 70ish pop/prog album sounding like early Bowie/Genesis. The working title is Ellipsis.

Lalle Larsson will record a trio album later this summer featuring yours truly and Morgan Ågren. It will be a demanding job for me to play all those crazy tunes Lalle has written, add the spice from Ågrens drumming and a new universe will unfold.

And for now enjoy the spring and the sunshine. Hopefully good health will come and greet you all with the sunniest smile upon its face.

With love / Jonas Reingold

The Carnabys, an unsigned rock band featuring two Institute alumni have won the Grand Prize in Hard Rock’s Global Battle of the Bands Competition - Hard Rock Rising.

This fantastic prize will see them embark on the opportunity of a lifetime: a World Tour in six renowned cities arranged by Hard Rock International; a spot on the bill at the Hard Rock Calling Festival (London), alongside the likes of Kasabian, Paul Weller and Bruce Springsteen; an album and music video produced through Hard Rock Records; and new music equipment and gear valued at $10,000.

Both studied on the Institute’s intensive one-year Higher Diploma in Music Performance 2011-2012. Jack commented on his time at the school: "I really enjoyed my time at the Institute, studying there helped me hone my skills on and off the stage, and prepare for situations I have been in with The Carnabys".
Higher Diploma Programme Leader, Mike Sturgis congratulated the students, saying: “We are extremely proud of what Jack Mercer and Ben Gittins have achieved with The Carnabys. Their success is indicative of the huge amount of talent, drive and dedication found in Institute students.”
Following several battle rounds against some of London’s top talent, The Carnabys were chosen to represent London and moved on to the global voting round in which they came 11th out of 25. In the final stage a panel of music industry professionals; including Steven Van Zandt (E Street Band), Toby Leighton-Pope (Live Nation’s Senior Vice President of Music), Hard Rock International’s Head of Music & Artist Relations, John Kirkpatrick, and Hard Rock Records Co-Heads of A&R, James Buell and Blake Smith, named The Carnabys as the Grand Prize winner.
