Tom Quayle: about improvising

A very interesting discussion about guitar improvisation precipitated by an initial comment from Tom Quayle on the guitar idol forum, where you can also vote for Tom Quayle

Tom Quayle says:
I just wondered how many of the entries have completely improvised solos? It's always been an interesting topic for me as I come from a jazz background and all of my solos are completely improvised. I don't think I've ever composed a solo in my life and am intrigued by other people's approaches. I don't think I could even remember a fully composed solo if I wrote one!

Faraz Anwar: abstract point of view

The second spot taken for the free guitar idol promo is for Faraz Anwar. Faraz is currently in third place and you can vote for him on
Abstract Point of View was released on Gnarly Geezer Records in 2001 owned by the legendary guitar player Allan Holdsworth. According to Faraz, "It's nothing but me. This album is a part of me. Sometimes it's aggressive and at times it's romantic". And the thing that gave him utmost satisfaction was the fact that Allan Holdsworth appreciated him. He is a self-proclaimed disciple of Allan. Getting the appreciation of someone, whom you consider as your inspirational teacher is something. This album got him a place among Gnarly Geezer Artists. These are all Jazz-Fusion artists. Jazz is considered to be the most difficult genre of music. This is a solo album in the real sense of the word. He wrote all the music and sequenced all the tracks himself. It was recorded in DFS in just four months. He hasn't played this album live yet. When asked why, his answer was "There are no artists who can play live, the sequenced bass and drums on the album."

Track listing

1. "Through the Passage of Time" – 12:44
2. "Maze" – 4:53
3. "Prophet" – 6:56
4. "Don't Let Your Spirit Die" – 5:30
5. "Last Summer" – 4:46
6. "Why?" – 10:28

Jack Thammarat: on the way blues jam tracks

You might not be familiar with the concept of guitar heroes from Thailand, but take our word for it, there are some seriously good players over there. One of the best is Jack Thammarat, who is currently riding high in the voting for Guitar Idol 2009. We're delighted that Jack has let us create a Custom Shop package with his Guitar Idol tune "On The Way", and he even made a new video of the tune, exclusively for us! As usual, the package also includes the full audio track and backing track with full Tab in Powertab and PDF format.

Jack Thammarat comes to bluesjamtracks!

Alex Hutchings: blue class top of blues jam tracks

Alex Hutchings pips Guthrie Govan to top slot this week with his Custom Fusion bundle. Also breaking into our top 5 is Hedras Ramos with his Rock Series 1. Based on downloads for the last week, the most popular bundles are:

1 Alex Hutchings - Custom Fusion
2 Guthrie Govan - Contemporary Series 1
3 Guthrie Govan - Larry Carlton jamtrack
4 Hedras Ramos - Rock Series 1
5 Rock Blues Bundle

If you have not checked these packages out, click any of the links above to find out why they are so popular with fellow guitarists worldwide.

Florence,December 21st 2008. "DRAGOON SPEAKER" organizes Giacomo Castellano's master class. 4 hours of music and training with one of the best Italian guitar players. Giacomo Castellano in various takes jamming along to the backing track of his song Naked Sun. The lead track was simply recorded through a Dragoon cabinet with Celestion 25W Greenbacks mic'ed with an SM57 and captured with a portastudio and then mixed back with the backing track. Unfortunately we had to keep the volume way down, in future videos we'll let the amp "breathe" a little. Enjoy the video!

Antonio Cordaro: hot frets and masotti x100m demo

We are proud to present Tony Cordaro in one of our Artist Series videos. Tony is an extremely versatile guitarist, and in this song showcases a crossover fusion style that incorporates elements of shred, jazz and a little funk thrown in for good measure. He uses a 100w Masotti X100M Classic amplifier that has been custom modded and plays a Jacaranda JL-1 guitar. We look forward to doing more videos with Tony!

Pete Pachio: triple xxx in planning

Pete Pachio says:
I have got all the pieces of the puzzle in place for my new solo project. "Project XxX". Project XxX will be a heavy, chock full of odd meters shred fest that will feature several world-class guests. I hope to have Project XxX out by end of 2009, beginning of 2010. It will appeal to fans of the following band/projects: Planet X, Dream Theater, Liquid Tension, Spastik Ink, Blotted Science, Meshuggah, Defect Noises, etc etc. I guarantee the following things about this project: 1) that it may leave me for dead. 2) that it will leave the listening audience wanting more. I promise to break the boundaries with over the top psychotic insane shredding over heavy grooves and death-defying odd-meters... but. Yet still never sacrificing melodies!Stay tuned for more!

Allan Holdsworth: fatboy gear wire review

Fusion guitar legend and all around British Man Alan Holdsworth incorporates a lot of guitar-triggered synth textures in his performances. It only makes sense that, when Carvin started making MIDI-equipped guitars, they'd soon make the Carvin Alan Holdsworth Signature Series HF2S Fatboy Synth Access.

The previous Holdsworth signature guitar already featured humbuckers and piezo transducers, so you could say that Carvin has increased this guitar's tonal options by 50%. You could also argue that, because MIDI-output can be used to trigger a practically infinite number of sounds, Carvin has actually increased the guitar's tonal options by ∞%. I ascribe to the latter theory, and you can trust me, I am a doctor of maths
