Joe Bonamassa: Driving Towards The Daylight mini review

Joe Bonamassa album “Driving Towards The Daylight”

This review is mini in the sense that I never have enough time to do great work justice that it deserves. So I'll cut to the chase with this mini review. I often feel I'm spread thin, but I know that Joe Bonamassa must be working 10 times harder than me. He's a productive workaholic and he just never seems to stop, popping up in Black Country Communion, his own live shows and work with other artists spicing up their music as a hired gun. So it’s no surprise that Joe is already on to another release, the new “Driving Towards The Daylight”, a follow up to the critically acclaimed and Truth In shredding favourite “Dust Bowl”.

I said the review was mini...so what do we get with this release? Well perhaps it will help if I explain that Bonamassa was born and raised in New York. His parents owned and ran a guitar shop. He is a fourth-generation musician; with a great-grandfather and grandfather who both played trumpet, and a father who plays guitar. So Joe is steeped in music and has that never say die New York attitude, and in this release he takes some time to explore his own compositions and travel aback in time, going back to his roots, a past steeped in rich blues heritage. But don’t expect, spinning black and crackling vinyl and rut gut whiskey, this is release is state of the art production, crisp and clear.

Mixed in with four Bonamassa-penned originals including the classic “Driving Towards The Daylight” are covers... well re envisions of tracks from Tom Waits, Bill Withers, Bernie Marsden and Willie Dixon and to make this vision a reality, Joe has significant enough pulling power to attract the best to his plan. So the album was recorded at The Village Recorder in Los Angeles, California and Studio at the Palms in Las Vegas, Nevada by "must have" producer, Kevin “Caveman” Shirley. This guy really knows how to capture Joes classic rock guitar sound and produces a mix which has great richness and listener appeal. Add to that a cast of some of the best rock and studio players around Brad Whitford (guitar), Blondie Chaplin (guitar), Anton Fig (drums and percussion), Arlan Schierbaum (keyboard), Michael Rhodes (bass), Carmine Rojas (bass), Jeff Bova and The Bovaland Brass, Pat Thrall (guitar) , plus Whitford’s son Harrison Whitford (guitar)... well you get the picture.

With this potent mix of class you instinctively know that this is going to be a classic and I have no hesitation in giving this the five stars that it deserves. ( hell I’ll even throw in a special six star because Bonamassa’s always taking his playing beyond the norm)... and of course you already know that Bonamassa is already assured a place in the pantheon of the greats?... you didn't need me to tell you that now did you?!
