I recently had the great pleasure of once again visiting the indomitable Mattias IA Eklundh's Freak Guitar Camp for a couple of clinics, and the slogan/theme/hypothesis for my 2nd clinic was "everything's a backing track if you're brave enough". The idea is that you can (and should) treat any and all music you encounter as potential vehicles for improvisation! Jam along to the TV, the radio, the Spotify, the YouTube, the wife singing in the shower and so on - it's great fun, great ear training, you learn to adapt to all kinds of musical situations, it's just all around healthy stuff!
To demonstrate how I go about doing this, I tracked down a number of looped parts of popular songs and in front of the clinic audience proceeded to improvise over the songs (none of which I had previously tried playing over). There's a few moments of tonal triumph in there along with all the diatonic defeat, distress and disappointment, but I figured it might be of interest to some of you. Enjoy!
