Derryl Gabel: Lesson Reviews

Reviews
Hi Guitar Friends,

Just wanted to share with you some of the responses I received from students. This one in particular just received a full scholarship to the National Guitar Workshop!

"I started taking lessons from Derryl last July 2011. Since then he has taught me a lot in such a short amount of time. Every other instructor I had only showed me bar chords but with Derryl, he taught me how the chords are made and how to get different voicing like a true jazz fusion guitarist. Not only has he taught me to play better but he even set up my guitar rig for me to get a great jazz fusion sound. Derryl has taught me a lot about one of my favorite guitarist, Allan Holdsworth. When things get tough, he is always there to help me out in my guitar playing. This past week, I learned that I had received a full scholarship to the National Guitar Workshop this summer. If it had not been for Derryl I would have not received this scholarship. We went over soloing ideas and how to sound more like Allan Holdworth. I recorded my music and sent it to NGW. When they contacted me about my playing, one of the judges said he heard a very strong Holdsworth influence. If it had not been for Derryl teaching me about Holdsworth it would have never sounded like it did. I received the Tricia Woods scholarship through the NGW. There were times I wanted to quit playing guitar because I had to learn all over again due to focal dystonia in my left hand. I switched to playing left hand guitar. Derryl helped me with exercises to improve my legato playing and picking. I have a lot to learn but with Derryl teaching me, I will get to where I want to be in the shortest amount of time. If you want to take your playing to another level, Derryl is the guy who can help you do this."

"Ive been very happy with the lessons and offer the following excerpt:

"Derryl has been a fantastic guitar instructor. I would have never developed as far as i have without his expert coaching. His guitar lessons draw upon decades of experience and are relevant, methodical, and highly effective. I would recommend Derryl to guitar students at all levels."

"I am a 54 year old guitar player who put the guitar down from age 25 til about 4 years ago. I had learned to play by ear back in the 70s. Back then, I just bought a chord book, learned a few scales from a friend, played for a few years, but then put the guitar away. Got re-interested in guitar about 4 years ago. Found a few of Derryl's CDs on line (Pentatonic Passages and a couple of others). I bought them and they were great but it was pretty advanced. I let them gather dust for a while and then saw that Derryl gave lessons on-line. I called him and he picked up the phone (!) and he was extremely helpful. He walked me through getting a webcam, setting up Skype for lessons etc.

I have been taking lessons from Derryl for a little over a year and my playing has improved substantially. Derryl is very patient, which is a great quality for a teacher. He has helped me use his DVDs, has given me practice routines, etc. I am an attorney so he knows to set me up with manageable practice routines. He is also a great listener. He helps me identify my weak spots and pushes me to work on those, instead of what I am already good at.

Like all good teachers, he challenges me, but still makes it fun. I would recommend Derryl to work with ANY level of guitarist, beginner, intermediate or advanced. He has given me the theory that I never had when I taught myself. He has provided me a lot of "Aha" moments. Derryl is a really nice guy too, which makes Skype lessons enjoyable. I take one hour lessons every other week and he gives me a lot to work on and also tells me where we are headed over the next couple of lessons.

If you are on the fence about taking lessons, give Derryl an hour or two and I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Your guitar knowledge and ability will improve. Heck, even Dweezil Zappa bought Derryl's entire library of guitar DVDs. That speaks for itself."

" I have been studying with Derryl for more than six months now, and I have seen a huge improvement in my technical skills. He is a great guitarist and a delicate teacher, who knows how to present lessons so that they are easy to understand. He has provided great learning tools for me to play any kind of music I want to focus on. I highly recommend his skype classes!"

"After 27 years of playing I felt the time was right to give my playing a shot in the arm to make the step change beyond rock technically proficient rock playing into the demanding area of fusion and the playing styles of the likes of Alan Holdsworth, Scott Henderson and Frank Gambale. I had been grappling with this style for years without much success and was intrigued by the new opportunities provided by the Internet to learn from world class players. I was already an admirer of Derryl having seen many of his Youtube clips and purchased some of his DVDs so knew that he was the best person to help me take my playing forward. After nearly a year of lessons I am pleased to report that my playing has improved massively and no longer feel constrained by the ruts of the past. In fact the opposite is true. My main frustration comes from only having limited personal time to develop my playing after allowing for work, band and family commitments.

Considering we both started playing at the same age with similar inspirations it is incredibly humbling to see how much knowledge and playing ability Derryl has. It is great to know that I now have a mentor at hand that can help guide me through the tricky path to learning to play fusion. It is truly an honor to learn from such a giant of the guitar.

In terms of learning using the Internet compared to not being in the same room as someone, I have found to be a non issue. In fact , the ability to put tab and diagrams on screen is a real bonus. I totally recommend this approach to learning without hesitation. "

"I have to say that after ordering his DVD guitar lessons I was quite impressed with the content. I've been playing for forty two years and I am already a solid player. Using his material has help me look at the guitar neck in new ways that I didn't before. This material is for anyone, beginner to advanced players that want to take their playing to the next level. Then I started to study with Derryl privately. This will greatly enhance the already great material offered. Thanks Derryl for your great motivation."

I still have a few more openings that I would like to fill. If you are interested I need to know the days and times that are good for you, your skype ID, how often you would like to take, and your location ( city, state, and country if outside of the US ).

I know there's some of you out there that would like just one lesson to answer some questions etc... and that is fine. We can do just one lesson. Others my be hesitant to take a lesson because they don't know how effective taking a lesson online would be because they have never tried it. My advice to you is just book one lesson to see if it is right for you.

Those of you that have my DVDs and are struggling to digest the material I could help with a practice routine and coaching. Maybe you've been able to digest the material but need help with application in improvisation and composition. I can help in that area as well. If you need help setting up a studio, filming, guitar sound settings, or learning your favorite solos I can show you how.

Here's something that might interest some of you out there. Would you like to be able to slow down youtube videos of your favorite players so you can figure out the licks? I can show you how to do that too. Think about it. How many awesome players are there on youtube? By slowing down the video and audio (without changing the pitch) there's practically an unlimited amount of ideas just waiting for you.

Advantages to taking lessons online:

  • Use your own equipment
  • Take a lesson anywhere WIFI or internet is available
  • Be in the comfort of your own home
  • Convenience! Save gas and time
Some tools that I use to make the lessons easier to follow and more enjoyable are on screen neck diagrams, standard notation and tab of the material covered, mp3 backing tracks for you to practice with, and multi camera angles and close ups when needed.

If you are interested, please email me to set up an appointment. You can schedule just one lesson if you like to see if this works for you.

In order to take lessons online you will need to download and install Skype which is free. Just go here to get Skype for Windows Skype for Windows
