4. Do you have any advice for anyone picking up a Surfreter? It can be pretty damn daunting.

First and foremost, you'll have to learn to rely more heavily on your ear, and your sense of touch, and the relationship between the two. It’s obviously important to develop accurate intonation, but learning exactly where to put your fingers – where the frets would be, not in between – is only part of the process. Spend a lot of time with vibrato, because after all, if your intonation is off, you can always apply a nice, wide vibrato, haha… Most importantly, have fun with it! There’s so much freedom to experiment with things you wouldn't be able to do on a fretted guitar… Concentrate on what makes the fretless unique, and you’ll spend countless hours exploring the possibilities.
