Milan Polak: melodic chop meister

News:
11-12-2007:
Another interview with Milan Polak with the French magazine Aux Portes Du Metal.

Well, at the moment I am writing and recording new material for my next vocal album in my studio. It will be a lot heavier, more progressive and less bluesy than 'Straight'. All the bluesy stuff will be put in a separate folder for a future blues album. I also want to release a complete acoustic album sometime in the near future but first and most important will be the follow-up to 'Straight'.
In April/May I also co-wrote 10 songs for the new CD of the German metal band Subway To Sally. I played all the electric & acoustic guitars and electric sitar on their album. It's called 'Bastard' and just entered the German album charts at 7 two weeks ago. I also have a few more projects in the pipeline. There's always something to do... (laughs)

Milan Polak and a brand new interview with Bernd Joachim of Bright Eyes. Find out how Milan Polak feels about reality TV, casting shows and other stuff!

Milan says:
I always stuck with Charlie Parker’s quote, “Learn everything, forget it and play.” I personally am not familiar with Jazz music at all but that’s an interesting thesis. Well, it’s not so much about Jazz or the music style. This goes for any kind of music. I do not really label music or divide it into styles as you can also tell when listening to my instrumental CD’s. I see it like this: There are 12 notes in Western world’s music – some cultures have tones and therefore 24 notes – and you can deal with those in various different sounds, rhythms, musical styles and what not but they will always remain those 12 notes. So you can either use them to create trash or good music.

23-04-2007:
Milan Polak recently completed an interview with Andy Craven of VirtuosityOne.
Well, see that’s the problem. If people do not appreciate or recognize quality music anymore then they also won’t be willing to pay for it. This whole illegal download issue has become a major problem for musicians & record companies. And the worst thing I have recently experienced: Some idiots who claim to be music critics for a magazine receive FREE promo CD’s for reviews and put them on the internet before the actual release of the CD. How stupid is that? paid a lot of money to produce ‘Straight’. Now if some moron who receives my CD for free makes it available for illegal download, I will not have any financial return and therefore won’t be able to record a next album. If I can’t record an album, I don’t have anything to offer to a record company to sign. If the record company doesn’t have anymore CD’s to release then this guy will not receive any more CD’s to review and his job becomes obsolete…

As far as the legal downloads thing goes, I’d say it’s a good thing. It enables people to only pay for the songs they actually like instead of the whole CD. That should encourage musicians to write more good songs and not just put one or two on a CD and make the rest fillers.

The Bailey Brothers do the first interview for Milan's Straight CD.

I am very excited! It's been a long, hard road full of fun and good times but also full of pain, blood, sweat & tears. Being producer and executive at the same time, I financed the whole CD out of my own pocket, the musicians, the studios, the travels, the mixing and mastering, photo shoot, artwork, etc. But then again, the advantage was that nobody told me what to do. I was lucky to work with awesome musicians and I am really happy with the result.

Coming soon...the vocal debut

Milan:
"'Straight' stands for the whole concept of this album. One day I sat down and thought about a single word that could perfectly describe me & my music and I found it in 'straight'. The term 'straight' has a lot of different meanings and they all apply to my personality, my lyrics, my music and my attitude. It stands for the way this album looks, sounds and was produced - no FX, no BS. What you see & hear is what you get - 100% Milan. Enjoy!"

Background:
Milan Polak is a former American Institute of Music, graduate and lecturer has made his name. At AIM he worked with musicians like Rich Kern (awesome composer and player but now currently a photograher and building cool web sites) , Lale Larson, Todd Duane, Joey Tafolla, Shawn Lane, Deen Castronovo and Frank Gambale.

If you get a chance check out demos or Cosmic Monstrositors featuring Todd, Lale and Milan around this era.

He has recorded for Mike Varney Shrapnel records and on "Guitar On the Edge" series for Mark Varney head honcho of the now defunct Legato records. These releases highlighted his melodic sensibilities and clean playing style.

Finally releasing a band based release “Changing Times” and a rare solo album, “Guitar 2001” which showcased his strong song writing and pyrotechnic guitar displays.

Since then he has proved his quality by being invited t oplayer with internationally recognised artists such as Billy Sheehan, Steve Bailey , Marty Friedman, Tangerine Dream and Falco.

His commercial skills have also been honed writing catchy advertising jingles.

In 2002 he worked with Liquid Note Records on highly aclaimed "The Alchemists” and ”on the track Sometimes "I Still Miss You" and "Utopia"” for the Jason Becker-tribute “Warmth In The Wilderness Vol. II” for Lion Music.

Out of the blue he appears on one of the best neo fusion albums of 2004, JAM featuring the rather excellent Alessandro Benvenuti and Joel Rivard. A rare mixture of three distinct guitar voices, check out the review at Essential Guitarist.

Not content with that he is now working on a long awaited solo release, recording the awesome new Entranced album with Mario Parga and has found time to work on an explosive new classical instrumental "shreddathon " under the guise of MPII with Mario. Look out for these soon.

You can check out his guitar lesson and interview on essential guitarist web site or dmme.net classic rock and beyond or visit his excellent web site at www.milanpolak.com
