Kudos for alloutjazz for spotting this. Japan's Pioneer Corp.has developed an optical disc capable of holding 400 Gbytes, or about sixteen times the capacity of today's Blu-ray discs.

The technology is also backwards-compatible with the Blu-ray technology, Pioneer said, as the objective lens optical specifications are the same as used by the lenses in BD drives.

Each disc contains 16 layers of 25 Gbytes each, Pioneer said. For now, the disc is read-only. So you'll have to wait to see if this would be a low cost back up medium.
