I could never work out how you play one of these instruments, so I asked Brian. Brian Larkin responds:
Brian Larkin: Fretless Dorian jam
There are dots at 3, 5, 7, etc. as with most guitars, but they don't help much; they're where the middle of the space between the frets would be, and on a fretless you have to play precisely where the fret itself would be. So it's all by feel/ear... If I hit a bad note I try to cover it up with a nice wide vibrato. =P I used to practice Moto Perpetuo on this guitar, so that helped me work out some of the intonation issues... :)

That's very nice fretless guitar playing.
