News: Snarky Puppy to attend ICMP

The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance, one of the world’s leading schools of modern music, is delighted to announce that it has secured the first-ever UK visit of one of the most respected names in music, ground-breaking US collective ‘Snarky Puppy’. The Institute-sponsored short tour will include an exclusive three-day educational residency, during which ‘Snarky’ will be delivering educational workshops and masterclasses, and a live gig at London venue Cargo.
With the release of their last two live CD/DVDs, Snarky Puppy has gone from an underground secret to being one of the most internationally respected names in instrumental music. The core of the group, which remains consistent, features Grammy Award winners Robert “Sput” Searight on drums (God’s Property, Snoop Dogg) and Shaun Martin on keys (Kirk Franklin, Erykah Badu).
Led by award-winning bassist/composer Michael League, also a visiting faculty member of the Institute, Snarky Puppy delivers raw funk and sensitive dynamics, relentless pocket and lyrical melodicism, lush harmony and soulful simplicity, and most importantly a delicate mixture of composition and improvisation. The three-time Dallas Observer Music Award winning group (‘Best Jazz Act’ 2008, 2009, 2010) fuses a deep knowledge and respect for musical tradition with sonic and conceptual innovation in a way that is able to reach the most critical or most carefree audience.
The exclusive three-day educational residency is being held between Monday 2nd and Wednesday 4th April, and will include masterclasses that will be conducted at the Institute in which ‘Snarky’ will explore concepts such as rhythm/groove, improvisation and composition/arranging. If you are interested in attending one of these masterclasses please visit the Institute’s events page at www.icmp.co.uk or call 020 7328 0222 in order to purchase your masterclass ticket (£15 per person/per day).
The live gig at Cargo will be on the evening of Tuesday 3rd April. Tickets are selling fast so to make sure that you don’t miss out on the event that is already on everyone’s radar! Tickets for the Cargo gig are £10 advance, available from Ticketweb, or £15 on the door.
