Allan Holdsworth: Trio live show from 1997



Allan Holdsworth (born 6 August 1946) is an English guitarist and songwriter. He has released 12 studio albums as a solo artist and played a variety of musical styles that span a period of more than four decades, but is best known for his work in jazz fusion. Holdsworth is known for their advanced knowledge, mathematics of the fretboard, which he incorporates a wide range of complex chord progressions (often with challenging stretches to finger) and extensive use of fast solos, the latter comprising shapes of scales "outside". His soloing technique unique in the use of legato drift of his desire to play saxophone originally, but have been unable to afford one, so he deliberately used the guitar to make it sound like a different instrument. He also became the name most associated with playing an instrument called SynthAxe.
Holdsworth has been cited as an influence by renowned guitarists like Eddie Van Halen, Joe Satriani, Greg Howe, Shawn Lane, Richie Kotzen, John Petrucci and Alex Lifeson.
