Gregory Bordat: Fusion Solo by Tim Miller [guitar/drums Only]

Hi there! This is my cover of a challenging up-tempo #fusionguitar solo by #timmiller guitar and drums only. Improvising without harmony stress allows to focus more on the note flow, the phrasing and time accuracy. This can be uncomfortable at first like playing blindfolded for example but you’ll get a lot of benefit from it ;) Later in the video you’ll find the #solobreakdown at slow tempo, with close-up and #tabs embedded! Have fun :)
I/ SOLO ANALYSIS
Guitar and drums is one of Tim’s favourite settings for solo improvisation. It would be foolish to state that the notes are not important, but this guitar and drum conversation shows that the rhythm has at least an equal, if not more important, role to play in the improvisation and music in general.
Harmonically speaking, we have an open playing field here as we’re dealing with just guitar and drums. But obviously Tim Miller’s solo doesn’t consist of a bunch of random notes put together. Those up-tempo lines are a subtle mix of arpeggios and chromatic phrases, with imply harmony sequence with Tim Miller’s selection of cohesive chord tones.
Tim’s legato technique is remarkably fluid, articulate and even which allows him to deliver a controlled continual stream of notes. The challenge here is to maintain the consistent 8th-note flow to the notes at up-tempo while keeping the swing and ensuring the accents align with the strong beats in the bar, especially when these notes coincide with hammer-ons or pull-offs.
II/ HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF IT
Tim Miller melodic approach consist, like most jazz players, of thinking in small melodic fragments rather than an entire musical phrase. There are short lines within each longer phrase in a way, the small melodic fragments are combined to create a cohesive whole and the combination are huge. You can this way easily adapt the length of you musical phrases at will and find your way through dense chord changes for instance.
With this in mind, you can learn a huge amount of musical ideas by cutting up these examples into one-bar and even one-beat fragments, exploring them as ‘cells’ and creating an infinite number of variations, combining and mixing them according to your ears.
III/ MISCELLANEOUS ► Normal speed: 285 bpm // Slow: 210 bpm ► Tabs are available in PDF or GP6 format (Just ask me!). ► I’m using in this video a Kiesel HH2. ► The guitar sound come from the Neural DSP Cory Wong archetype.
